Title: Imperial Russian Mounted Officer (Questions)
Post by: Major Weenie on 07 December 2008, 03:55:15 AM
Gents,
    So I've converted myself a Russian officer from a Wargames Foundry mounted Prussian staff officer. (No drop moulds involved.)  I clipped off the head with spiked helmet, and replaced it with one of those Copplestone 'Back of Beyond' heads wearing a Russian fur cap.  Now I'm in the process of painting him up in the fairly standard; White coat, Dark green trousers, Black leather sort of uniform.  But I have two questions;
1.) What color is the saddle cloth?
2.) What color is the sash worn around his waist. (Please don't say that Russians didn't wear a sash around the waist like the Prussians did.  I'm not sure that I could face up to carving it off.)
Regards,
Dow

Dow,

I've been trying to find my copy of the Blandford book on the Imperial Russian army, but of course, of all the Blandford's I have, it's the only one I can't find  >:(

No doubt it will turn up in a few months  ::)

They did wear silver sashes, at least up to the mid-19thC. Presumably these would have been worn concurrently with the Prussians' sashes, although I've no idea when either were phased out.

Can't help with definite info for the saddle cloth, but if you get nothing else, I'd suggest Russian green with silver trim, which even if not accurate should look OK.
