Title: Frostgrave 'future proofing'.
Post by: Jockjay on 10 February 2016, 02:04:50 PM
Hi all,

So after my first game of FG, I think the shelf life of cheap troops such as thugs/ thieves will be very low economically. My opponent pulled 600g out of our first game!

What I mean is, with a good dose of cash, thugs will be superseded by men at arms, thieves with treasure hunters etc.

So just a little bit of advice if you are playing on a budget; build your thugs with shields and thieves with a sword and offhand knife. This way the models will be easier to keep your models relevant throughout the campaign. For the guys with 20+ models on the shelf, ignore this! ha ha.

Hoops did this in our group, and whilst I was initially sceptical, I am currently gluing shields onto my thugs....

Is anyone else doing this sort of thing? Or am I just being a cheap ass?

Jay.

No, I've got a few figures that I'll be doing similar with. For example, I have an old Heresy beastwoman figure that is currently be used as a thug but will become a Barbarian whenI have the money to get one.

In our house it depends of how attached we are to our thugs. Some of them, those who have survived months along the wizards and have prove themselves as brave and trustful warriors, are rewarded with a shield and a fencing lesson by a knight and got a promotion as men-at-arms.

Others are simply discharged with more or less honours and return to the miniature box.

In my witch warband (level 18), a thug named Gus was upgraded to man-at-arms, so I made some conversions in the plastic miniature. The fellow is so brave he get a new promotion, this time to knight (I change his body to one with chainmail). Now, I'm thinking in designate him as my captain (again, a new change in the miniature)

I don't know why upgrade. In my main group I run the same squad as I had on the beginning (now I am LVL 32). Why? Everyone knows his job. I have 6 thieves to make a run for it (and by "it" I mean loot), 1 Treasure Hunter to run for it to hot spots and to hunt down the archers and 1 Templar to do some hard fighting (originally, he protected the Apprentice but it's not really necessary anymore). The grunt of the fighting is done by my wizard and apprentice. No need to glue anything. All the money I get can go to some more interesting things then soldiers. Like Grimoirs, Equipment for my Tower...

I always plan what my ideal warband will be before the campaine starts so my starting minis can be "promoted" to better figures. I have 4 lanthrocopes who just were getting used to their powers that I used as thieves then as they got more experience they were promoted to treasure hunters. I have several crossbowmen who get promotions to marksmen and infantrymen to templars. No need to switch figures at all. My wizard did die and I had to get a new one for that campaine but that's more just my own quirk than necessary.
