Title: Complete Frostgrave Inventory?
Post by: theironsoldier on 10 February 2016, 05:16:59 PM
Has anyone made a complete list of all that is needed to play FG?

I would love to make a kit that allows an "out of the box" experience.

Terrain, obviously, might not be included.

Off the top of my head:

Rulebook
2x d20's
Two wizard packs
One box of Frostgrave soldiers

You can build most of the soldier types from the one box.

Sorry, I should be more specific:

A complete inventory of game accessories: beyond dice what kind of spell markers, tokens, specific beasts, etc. are needed.

For instance, if all you have is what you just listed you won't be able to cast certain spells or spawn certain beasts.

1.5" and 3" blast templates, a 6' long straight "wall" template for "Wall" and "Fog" spells, markers for Bones of the Earth, Wizard Eye, Plague of Insects, Planar Tear. Tape Measures, of course. I also built gate markers for one of the scenarios.

I think that he wants a definitive list of all the miniatures that may be required, including summoned creatures and random encounters.  The Frostgrave "complete set."

I don't recall seeing such a list, but since the encounters are random, you may need multiples of certain monsters.  Six treasures (or more, with spells), could result in, say, six werewolves.  Obviously, it is highly unlikely that all treasures will result in a werewolf random encounter during a single game, but you might want more than one just in case.

A complete list of required miniatures is sort of impossible, unless you want to have the maximum number of models that could appear during a certain game.  Otherwise, I would collect models based upon their probability of appearing, with perhaps one or two extras.

I disagree with blast markers being a necessity - we've certainly not used them, just used the tape measure.

Actually, I agree with the Blast Markers being unnecessary. It just came to mind when he mentioned markers.

For the various undead encounters, I gravitate towards Mantic for zombies and ghouls, Wargames Factory for (pardon the pun) bare-bones skeletons (30 skellies for 17.00, although the WGF skeletons are rarer than hen's teeth anymore). Most of the other critters from the basic book can be sourced from most mini manufacturers, but Reaper's Bones line will get you the most beast for your buck. North Star (Brigade Games in the US), Foundry, Heresy and Hasslefree all have critters in their catalogues.

I think some kind of wound marker is handy if using the optional wounded rule as it's very easy to forget about in the heat of battle. Similarly I've painted a green '+1' and a red '!' on some spare bases to put next to models with some kind of magic bonus or curse affecting them as a reminder to check the warband sheet for the exact effect.
Some way of marking whether a crossbow armed model was loaded and ready to fire or not might be useful too.

For particular spell effects I'll only go to the trouble of making any relevant markers (e.g. Mud) if my wizard actually learns that spell.

There are many different ways that players can use the (optional) Random Encounter rules. If you use the table in the book without any modifications, and you don't roll the same encounter two or more times, the follow list will cover all the possible results.

3 Armored Skeletons
2 Skeletons
2 Ghouls
2 Zombies
1 Wraith
1 Vampire
1 Werewolf
2 Wolves
2 Wild Dogs
2 Ice Toads
1 Bear
1 Boar
1 White Gorilla
2 Ice Spiders
4 Giant Rats
1 Snow Leopard
1 Small Construct
1 Medium Construct
1 Large Construct
1 Imp
1 Minor Demon
2 Snow Trolls
1 Frost Giant
1 Worm

Using 'counts-as' models is always an option. I use the table in the book, but since I play in a Mordheim setting a number of my models are 'counts-as' beasties.  For example, instead of giant toad models I use squigs as counts-as Ice Toads. Instead of a White Gorilla, I use a Fimir (mostly because I like the model). Instead of Werewolf, I use a Beastman (like werewolves in Frostgrave, in some of the Empire provinces offer a bounty for the heads of Beastmen).
