Title: Schneerim Scenery: 3D printed Grindstone
Post by: Teardrop World on February 16, 2016, 04:00:47 PM
For years, the only terrain I made for 28mm was a modular dungeon with plaster bricks and two ships for a pirate game. The amount of work for 28mm eat my health, and I really hate to paint scenery. I hate painting. Downgrading to 15mm let me build HUGE scenery that don't need an industrial hall to be stored and use less paint.

Working hard on a real 3D version of a flat video games, I need a lot of scenery. Small things like blacksmith or alchemy labs, and big ruins, really big ruins. Unused bricks for the 28mm dungeon were hidden under a coat of dust and long gone from my memory, but once upon a time a few days ago I build a cage. This cage was obviously made to be hooked to a menacing structure (WIP of the cage here: https://teardropworlds.wordpress.com/2016/02/01/cage-of-freedom/ (https://teardropworlds.wordpress.com/2016/02/01/cage-of-freedom/) ).

I remembered the dungeon bricks and send immediately an Indiana Jonesque expedition in the Quest for the Lost Bricks. There was enough of them to build an Ancient Arche, the magnificent door to a Cursed Realm. The bricks are too big for 15mm miniature? Not if carved by a race of Giants!

Main structure finished, some broken bricks to be added:

A wooden ship accessory is used for the chain fixture. It was a challenge to drill only the swivel and not the finger:

A preview of the Arche. The second cage will probably be put on the ground, broken. Must find some skeletons to embellish the cages.

That is real nice. Using it for 15mm makes it look very awe-inspiring.

What this guy said.

Clever idea and really nice execution.

Thank you  ;)

I was previously thinking of a simple basing, with sand; but such impressive pillars needed a more civilised floor.
How many courageous warriors have broken their ankles on this disjoint pavement?

After basing the “Arche”, there was a lot of basing paste left. I just put it on a piece of MDF and added small rocks and a fellow on pal. The paste will take a few days to dry and I hope there will not be too much retractation. The base will be cut by the shape of the paste after complete drying.

If you’re lost in a dungeon and very thirsty, what kind of joy could it be to find such a well? If only it was filled with fresh water and not this … heee… arr… Transparent resin will be added, probably a bloody red.

The Arche is roughly painted. The next step will be the pavement.

The scale difference certainly makes it look even more impressive. Looking forward to seeing it finished.

Are you using ready made papier mache for basing?

Impressive looking entrance - for the dangling cage might I suggest that finer chain would look better, otherwise great builds and glad you found the bricks. Can't wait to see your bloody well of despair...

Hello,
It's Sand paste by vallejo, but enhanced with small gravel and coffe grounds. I prepare always too much of this mixture (and sometimes not enough, but never the right measure) and make mounds with the surplus.

Painted the Arche pavement. The basecoat for the Arche is made with a mix of Payne's Grey and white. I prefer the Payne's Grey, the result give a kind of very dark blue reflects, less concrete grey than just plain black. Filled the crackles in the pavement with pigment, then used a purple wash. Vegetation in progress.

Hello,

Finally found Polyfilla and added vegetation (great thank you to Malebolgia for his trick  :) ) and some tiny details like an owl and two rats (little game while you are at your boring work: can you spot them?).
A 15mm figure for scale on the picture.
Best regards

The additional greenery really pulls everything together, looks great! I tried Malebolgias method too after reading that thread, although I substituted the water effects with matte medium as it was the closest thing at hand. Your moss is better  :)
Title: Schneerim Scenery: Mountains
Post by: Teardrop World on March 10, 2016, 04:32:18 PM
Schneerim is a land of high Mountains, but unfortunately shops only sell flat tables. So I made some elevations before, but there's never enough of them as most are only one sheet thickness, and I stack them a lot. Currently building more mountains, with four layers each and a standard size of 30x40cm. The final result will be visually very "square", but will allow to place them side by side with nearly no gaps between. A hard and long work for a poor result. Not eye candy, but I post this to motivate my self.

Picture Below: Sheets cutted, some of the previously made "mountains" in the background

I used a special glue made for styropor, the "lotonthefloor-plentyonthehands-hardlywhereyouwantTM" made for isolation. This glue need a good pressure to be efficient, a cheap bass amplifier is used for this purpose (guitar amplifier are lighter). Game snobs would surely argue that the glue will be more efficient with a handwired boutique amplifier and cause a stronger bond with the glue  ;D.

The quality of the bond varies according to the music you are playing. I strongly recommend Elephant Talk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTQrlDzqUCA) by King Crimson. ;D

Ugh, sure, if you just want bond strength. Everyone knows that in order to achieve a glue bond that steps across the fourth dimension you need to play Beethoven's Fifth to it.

Sometimes I don't know why I even come on this forum.

Couldn't agree more. Beethoven is another frequent flyer on our audio play-lists.

Looking forward to more of this awesome, Schneerim terrain!

I really should start using that tube of Payne's Grey more often...

Well,

It hurt me to admit that a cheap bass combo was not good enough to help. The sheet fell appart when I cut them a little. After some chirurgical operation with kebab sticks and a generous amount of five minutes PVA glue, I opted for a more Heavy solution. I found last year an old Marshall head in a trash bin  8), and it seem to be the correct weight. Unfortunately, the reverb spring is very noisy and it's not a tube amp but an infamous Mosfet of the infamous 80's.
I hope it will not affect the glue this time.

 lol lol lol

I'm more of kind of Still Life by Van der Graaf Generator, or the utterly comdemnation of this world of madness in Mekanik Destruktiv Kommando (in french and only the introduction: https://youtu.be/ENmCg70zBiM?t=1s (https://youtu.be/ENmCg70zBiM?t=1s) Wonderful Bass line, shouted one night in 1980, still valid today and tomorrow).  o_o

After this musical apparté (in french in the text), and while the glue was drying, the flatness of those mountains was so obvious that I needed to sculpt some decorative element. A few hours of sculpt and massive production of styrodust give birth to some ... err... arrrr.... things. Just need to coat them with PVA and paint. The three element made previously are on top of the picture, and at the time they was made I thinked it was enough. You never have enough scenery. Never.

Cheers

Ouuaais! C'est excellent ça!

Sais pas pourquoi, mais cela me rappelle Vent du Mont Schärr. Genre différent, mais énergie sympa.

Also, the new rocks look sublime.

Just made a trek in an old WH fantasy box, while the mountains paint was drying. Exhumed some dwarves undercoated some years ago. These were obviously not 28mm minis but statuesque sculpts expressly made for 15mm.

The first prototype was good enough, and a second stair with a different style began to come out of life (well, more a kind of out of styropor)

First stairs before the base coat:

A boring block of styro, a chain and dwarves....

Basic shapes, stones engraving later... maybe with some kind of Dwarhmer (Dwarf in Schneerim) runes or decorations

Cheers

Nice work, and 28mm minis really do provide some great material to work with.

Had the joy to play with a 3D printer and the misfortune of a CHEAP printer with a lot of fails.
I needed to work at a blacksmith scenery for Schneerim, and building a grindstone was a challenge for my clumsy hands. Easier to do trackball and 3D software than with cutter in fingers.

Overall length of the tool: 20mm. Not very detailed, a Shapeway print would be a little bit better but it's fun to see the little thing grow layer after layer.

Original design:

And the printed and painted result, with 15 and 28mm figures for the scale. A second grindstone is on the printing raft, ready to be painted.
