Title: TWD goes to the NWF (two games played 23 June)
Post by: TWD on 16 February 2016, 04:24:54 PM
I cracked and bought some Artizan NWF models.
Here's the first four that I did as a test.

They paint up something loverly (and were dead quick to do as well).

Going to get me a small force ready for games of TMWBK when they're rleased later this year

Very nice, you should update the thread as you build up the force. TMWWBK is going to boost wargaming interest in the Colonial period and also in figure releases for the period I hope.

Fine stout chaps!

I'm considering doing some hill/mountain upgrades for my scenery that may suit the Afghan regions...

They look splendid old chap... they'd look even better if you pick their helmet straps out with a touch of brown.

I reckon you're correct in your assumption that TMWWBK will set the tables ablaze once it's published :)

Those turned out awesome.  Step 1:  Pick a scale.  Step 2: See someone's awesome miniatures in a different scale.  Step 3: Reconsider everything.  :o

The answer to that of course is multiple scales... :o

Then you can scale the different battle sizes.

Or four shy of a pair of units for TMWWBK*

Thanks Andy.
I'm hoping to be there, helping James out with Fort Vaux, so I'll definitely drop by for a look - very much looking forward to Tim Wubbuk.

I'm planning a couple of units of Sikhs next (I love a man with a big turban) to give me four British units (which seems like a good start)

What do you recommend for Pathans?
I'm thinking three units with rifles, one with muskets and a couple with swords.
Is that
a) historically plausible
b) a sensible force for TMWWBK?
Or should I have more (or fewer) of any of those groups?
(I'm thinking a bag each of Old Glory for the rifles and swords then use the Artizan ones for command and a few extra figures).

For my big games I have 2 groups of Ghazi swordsmen, 2 groups of swordsmen, 4 groups of riflemen and one of muskets, but with upgrades/downgrades, that comes to lots of points!!! More than the 24 you need for a 1 on 1 game. I figure that balance of swords vs guns is fine for most games set between the years  1880 and 1900. I think for 24 pts I had 2 rifle, 1 musket and 2 sword armed...

I've done a step-by-step guide for painting these over on my blog.
Partly for the benefit of anyone wanting to copy my crude approach, but mostly so I can remember what I did.

Anyway, if you want to know how to go from here:

Then follow the fourteen simple steps here:

I have the OG Pathans, and I'm frankly mystified by your verdict on their quality, especially when set alongside the very telling photographic evidence you yourself have provided. Crude and lacking in detail? The photos show clearly just how detailed they are, and how much character they have. I have some in front of me right now; every detail is crisply and cleanly sculpted - buckles are a good gauge, and they really stand out boldly - undercuts are deep, faces are sharply defined, very characterful and unmistakably Asiatic, and poses are active and dynamic. The only drawbacks I see with them when compared to other brands are a certain squareness of rifle butts, and the lack of tails on turbans (a deficiency that's due to OG's production system, in which heads and bodies are sculpted separately).

I'm a bit mystified by your reading of my review :)
I didn't say they were crude I said they were cruder than some specific brands - and I stand by that, compare for instance the rifles with those on Perry or Artizan figures or have a look at the knives and scabards which are basically just points of greenstuff.
I also agrees that the faces are characterful, though to be fair some of the eye sockets are so deep the eyeballs would actually sit in the middle of the brain :)

However I did also say that I really enjoyed painting them, I really like the finished results and that I'll definitely buy more.
In short I like them.
They're really great, simple soldiers and I'd recommend them but they're different from some of the more recent/high profile sculpts and that's what I was trying to convey.

Well, all I can say is that my reaction on opening the first bag I purchased was the antithesis of '... my heart sank..'. I was, and remain, impressed with the level of detail on these products of Andy Cooper's craftsmanship, and the sense of movement and drama he imbued them with; in contrast with the dull, lifeless poses of their Artizan equivalents. Swordsmen should be depicted charging or sneaking through the rocks, not waiting for a bus, and jezailchis and riflemen should be leaning forward or bracing themselves for a better shot, reloading, or sidling forward to a new firing position, not standing at the present like a sentry.  And the phrase '... lacking in detail...' is a direct quote from your blog commentary. Having viewed many close-up images of Artizan figures I don't see any more or better detail than on the OG Pathans.

I can find other major faults with the Artizan Pathans, and that brand in general that you find so laudable, the most glaring being their distorted anatomical proportions, with stumpy, foreshortened calfs. I also think the voluminous character of Pathan clothing is better captured in the OG figures.

So, if given a choice between paying around AUD$1 for my OG Pathans (as I did) with the occasional oddly positioned 'hey-Steve' head (easily enough corrected if it really concerns you) and $3 or so for something no better and in some respects inferior, I know which way my money would fall. Still, each to his own, as they say. However, I can't disagree with you about the Perry Afghans, or any Perry figures, for that matter; undoubtedly the best anatomically proportioned, most realistically posed figures on the market.

Crikey, I'm  glad I said I like them. Imagine how cross you'd have been if I disliked them.
 :D

You seem to be taking some fairly mild criticism of some toy soldiers very personally, but "each to their own" as you say.

Anyway, this thread was suppose to be about me showing some models I'd painted, so I think I'd like to get back to that, if that OK with you.

Feel free to start another thread where you can tell me my opinions are wrong.

You're reading a tone into my post that doesn't exist :-). It's a throughly rational, dispassionate response to your comments. And isn't the sole purpose of this site the discussion of toy soldiers?

But the fact remains that, whether you ultimately 'like' them or not, you did make what I consider an unfair comparison with Artizan, and I think that in the interests of fairness and balance alone readers of this forum who might be unfamiliar with the OG figures should be made aware that there are others who have them and who regard them as something other than second rate.

You're reading a tone into my post that doesn't exist

Man who thinks "I like these models and will buy more of them" = "these models are second rate" tells me I'm the one misreading things.

*bangs irony meter* is this thing on?

As I said, feel free to create your own "OG Pathans are the finest models known to man and TWD's opinions are wronger than Wrong Jack McWrong" thread and carry on this discussion over there.

No it's not.

It's about showcasing people's painting and gaming, whatever the perceived standard of quality.  It's about a supportive and friendly community that offers advice and guidance, constructive feedback and encouragement.

It's not for banging on about one's own opinions as if they are fact to the detriment of the OPs thread and original intentions.

Sorry TWD for interjecting here, but these days the LAF seems to have too many people pontificating and not enough people painting and gaming.

Now lets have some more pics of your NWF goodies :)

What a lovely pack of hill wolves!  :-*

I like the gent in the purple and black - what a peacock. He better watch his threads around his mates - he's likely to get rolled!

I personally use a good mix of OG Pathans in my NWF force, warranted the jezail armed ones, but would I think I'd still choose Foundry's in a pinch.

Regardless these certainly look the business.  :)

You don't get to be the leader by letting your mates pinch your best going-out clobber!  :)

Thanks, glad you like them. Simple wash and a few highlights jobs but the OG models respond well to that.

I need to get some of the Foundry ones and some Artizan ones as well
For now I have the rest of this pack and some Tiger ones (which were cheap but appear to be a tad rudimentary).

I've also just realised it's only a month till TMWWBK comes out, so I need to crank up production rates.

They look great Tom, I'm still not sure you will totally convince Steve the system is a Go-er, but he's an accountant so not to be trusted.

Indeed.
As we used to say of 40K (in ascending order of unpleasantness) a game for children, deviants and accountants.  :D

Just a quick question......where did you get your movement trays from? I have some GW Lotr ones but they only take 8 figures rather than the 12 needed for TMWWBK

Warbases make trays like that.

Steve is right, these ones came from the excellent Warbases. Specifically their 1p tray range http://war-bases.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=68_69 as all my models are based on 1p pieces.
They also do 25mm rounds (suitable for GW round bases) and 2p trays if you've blown the budget on a "twice the price" basing system. :)
They do skirmish ones as well, which my Afghans make use of.

Mostly washes and contrast paints. So quite quick and dirty. Had a bit of a problem with one of the washes, so not 100% happy with them. But they're fine at tabletop distance.

Did the Afghans go in for face-veils for the men? Always thought that was a North African thing (the Tuaregs and such are big on that, and it predates Islam). You live and learn (a question not a criticism, I honestly don't know).

Nice job. Keep 'em coming.  :)

Good question. The heads had veils, so I glued 'em on :)
And I'm probably not about to detach them any time soon.
But you're right, I don't think any of my metals have such face coverings

As far as I know, the Afghans / Pathans did not wear face coverings. That’s more of a Bedouin or Tuareg / Africa type thing.

Post by: Mad Guru on 14 November 2020, 08:39:46 AM
I must concur with my good friend Jeff and the esteemed Plynkes, as I'm unaware of such face-covering headgear being used by Afghans/Pashtuns, with maybe one or two exceptions, which I believe were photos taken during a dust storm in the 1970s or 80s, which might have shown scarfs wrapped around the wearer's face.  In full disclosure I also have one or two figures that began life as Moors/Saracens/Arabs sporting similar face-coverings, but somehow wound up with my Pathan Tribesmen, because I needed another standard-bearer or drummer or some other very specific type of figure, but even though I painted and based them... I almost never use them, because I can't shake the button-counting colonial Grognard in my soul.  All of that aside, TWD, I think your Ghazis look good, and would be happy to play in a game using them, were I lucky enough to have the chance!  I love it that you raised a designated unit of religious fanatics for your Afghan/Pathan forces, something I've been doing since some time around 1980, and continue doing to this day.

Interesting  stuff, thanks chaps.
In the sculptor's defence I think at least one of the "veiled" heads is definitely more a "scarf round head" improvised look rather than a "proper" veil.
But not all of them.
Another strike against the set v. the Perry version...

I'll just hide them at the back and remove them as first casualties :)

Perry set is overall nicer.

Good one Tom  8)

I don't own any of the WA plastics but I do feel that the Perry stuff, which I do onw, has much more fluency and dynamism in the poses. The WA stuff, while not bad (I've certainly seen more "squirrely" plastic sets) seem awkward by comparison.

As I say, I don't onw the WA stuff so can only really compare from a distance.

:D

Your pictures speak a thousand words.

The Perry set also has roughly twice as many components - in terms of different bodies, arms, heads, weapons, etc.

But fair play to WA, they stole a march on this one. First mover advantage and all that.

Perry and Victrix, for me, are streets ahead of anyone else in the ‘historical’ plastics stakes, for both quality and quantity of components.

To be clear i don't think the WA set is a bad set, it isn't. If the Perry set hadn't come out I'd be more than happy to continue using them. There are some poor quality plastic sets out there and this isn't one of those.  :)

But its just not *as* good as the Perry one in terms of sculpting quality, options and even price.

Been working on speedpainting some Ghazi so I made a step-by-step guide.
It's a bit crude (and out of focus in places) but should explain what I do to go from here:

Those look great for a speed painting. I've used the iyanden yellow contrast for beards to good effect. Good stuff and thanks for the tutorial.

At last a return to the NWF with not one, but two games against James.

A British column is ambushed!

Excellent looking game. I can relate to roll bad leadership traits, but love the flavor they can add to a campaign.

Thank you. I actually suggested we skipped traits (as it was Martin's first game and I was well out of practice) but I'm glad we went with them after all - they added a bunch of flavour (though I'm not sure Martin enjoyed them quite so much!)

Matt came over for what turned out to be two games of TMWWBK.

The first involved a punitive village burning mission by the British.

And the second an attempt to capture the Governor's mistress

Both games suffered a little due to a combination of scenarios and traits unfortunately.

However the collection looked fab and made me want to play more games.
