Title: Hardback or softback
Post by: Harry on February 21, 2016, 10:40:28 AM
I have noticed that further supplements seem to be available in soft back only.
Me ... I would prefer to build a lovely little hardback collection .... and would be happy to pay more for this.

How about you .... hardback or softback?

Same here. I was slightly disappointed that there was no hardback version available for Thaw, but I don't really mind that much. However, if a hardback edition would be made available, preferably in the same size as the original rulebook, I would probably buy it.

I'm happy either way, but that's probably because I keep all my FG stuff in a slightly larger than A4 folder.

If the later printed supplement that is intended to have all the digital supplements is going to be in hardback though I'd hope it would include Thaw as well.  Otherwise I'd rather it was softback to go with the current supplement.

Either way though I'll be buying it. ;)

The hardback/softback issue doesn't bother me half-so-much as official rules being available digital only or exclusively in a magazine.

Absolutely fine with softback for short books. 64 pages for hard bound doesn't make much sence to me. The main thing for me is having everything on paper :-)

My preferences:
1: Paper ( I don't like to read books on e-readers or tablets or what they are called these days ).
2: Hardback.
But I'm more than happy to add a soft cover supplement to my collection every 6 months. If a choice, I happily shell out a few bob more for hardcover or use the paperback when gaming and have the hardback for the collection.
But I'm a lost cause...  lol.

+2

I don't buy many of the wagaming mags as I have no interest in historical gaming (do I really care that the epaulettes should be red, not blue?) and apart from the occasional issue they normally have only 3 or 4 pages that interest me, so buying a magazine at £4-5 a go is a waste of money - I might as well buy White Dwarf then. ;)
Not saying that they shouldn't do them, but it would be nice if they could be available seperately at some point.

As for pdfs, I don't mind them, but printing often depends on how much graphics are involved, and not having a tablet, nor wishing to take my laptop to club, they're not much use on game nights (phones to small to use easily).

I prefer the PDF, then printed out, hole punched and put in a binder.

This way I have both the digital file for ease of use (these things can be ctrl-f'd!) and one binder that can hold ALL subsequent rules in one item, tabbed to easily find the various sections and a bit of vigorous highlighting to quickly find the useful rules.

It's how I've done Necromunda for years, and it's worked great.

I'll go with whatever is the cheapest option to be honest.

Don't mind wether it's hard cover or soft but searching for rules in a pdf is the only way to go.  Should get a digital version when you purchase the analogue book.

We've sort of done this with Frostgrave. I have a little placcy folder that has the stuff you need to refer to most printed off in it. It also enables you to print off your warband sheet and keep it in there too. I intend to laminate it so that I can use a white board marker to update it during games, a hard copy will be kept and updated electronically.

I sort of agree. I'm not sure it should be free, because you are potentially getting two products but a once usable discount code would be good. Say, 50%? I do appreciate being able to have both. Using a tablet can be an arse at times but it does save you the hassle of having to carry several rule books around with you at once. Especially if you are intending to just read hem on a commute etc.

Vastly prefer softbacks...which I then take to the shop, have the binding cut off, clear panels on back/front and I have them spiral-bound.  Perfect gaming books (lay open/flat when needed).  But that's only applicable if they're cheap enough to put under the knife.

I prefer hardback in all my rules books, (and 'paperbacks') because I put them in a rucksack which means they get damaged less, and also they just ... feel better.

But when I buy a Blu Ray disc I usually also get the DVD and a free download version too.  It's only 1 product, but can be used in different equipment.

I don't think the supplements are  big enough to justify the expense of a hardback, so softback is fine for me.

Actually, Osprey does do something like that. If you buy a book and an ebook at the same time, they give you 25% off both.

Here's an annoying little story.

Took my (purchased) pdf copy of this game to the local Staples, which is an office supply chain here in the US where they have printing services. I pass the guy my USB stick, tell him where the file is. He opens it up, furrows his brows and looks through it.

"Sorry, I can't print this for you. It's for personal use only."
"Er, yeah. I purchased the pdf just so I could have a copy printed for myself."
"Right, but we can't print things for personal use. We would be making a profit, breaking the copyright."
*what*

So, I had to go home and print it on my own black and white laser printer, which actually was just about as decent as they would have done it, without forking over $$$.

I just noticed the rules were in paperback on Amazon.  I looked for hardback version but couldn't find it.  I really love the look and feel of the first Frostgrave hardback book.  I like the hardback because AD&D 1.0 came in hardback and so does 5.0 and the cover doesn't damaged/frayed as easily.  I also like that the book is a little smaller than the D&D  hardbacks.. easier to read in bed.

Looking forward to future prints of these expansions to be in hardback.  Hopefully by the time I get to the expansion they will offer hardback.  I really dislike paperback for game rules.

The way this game is catching on (I constantly see newcomers all the time now), it seems like there shouldn't be a problem with hardback being available?  I mean I'd pay $5-10 more for a hardback no question.

Jennifer, if you're in the states, I'll sell you my hard-copy.  Used once and has my name scribbled in the front cover.  lol

I have the first Frostgrave book in hardback.  Do you have Thaw of the Lich Lord in hardback?

Now that I look at it, I see Thaw of the Lich Lord is only 64 pages.. bout the size of a D&D module.  SO I guess it makes sense it is in paperback form since it is so thin.

I prefer PDF and then take it to Fed Ex Office (formerly Kinkos here in the states) and have them Spiral bound it.  It makes it really nice since I can open the book and fold it back on itself. :)

Ah, okay.  Thought you meant the rulebook.  If the Lich is 64 pages it's in the standard Osprey book format (same as Lion Rampant, and all of their other game projects).
