Woke up one morning thinking of pirate ships...as you do. Popped down to the local (ish) Pound shop and picked up a couple of toy plastic ones. The recent release of the TAG dwarves has really got me keen to do stuff after something of a post divorce lull...... Anyway, it's unfortunately softer plastic so will be a bit of a swine to paint although I have some acid etch primer that may help that...once the piece is complete. I picked up some of the dwarves off a friend who had bought too many and am just waiting for my battalion to arrive so I can play with command figures for the crew......
I should have taken a pic of the ship in its packet...I do have another so will add it later at some point.....

First job was to strip it apart and add decking..

Added 2 old Ral Partha Dwarf Steam Cannon engines...along with the cabin housing...

Rear transmission added with 'far too small' wheels...

No idea of colour scheme or where it's going. Once the TAG package turns up I'll explore adding an artillery piece as I'd like to keep to the figures from the same range.
The Dwarves are from The Assualt Group - link here. (http://www.theassaultgroup.co.uk/index.php?p=247)

Looks great already! I started something similar a couple years ago, but stalled and yours is further along already.
Marauder Dwarfs in renaissance garb also work well with them if you should need to look elsewhere. Originally I started this range just to complement them with one or two sets. lol
-
I had some sets off you over the years but can only find the cavalry now..... >:( ....post divorce storage system needs improving...

Hnnnnnnnnnnggggg!!!!!!!!
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH.
Jealousy-inducing creation. Fantastic work. Can't wait to see you do more work on it.
-
A little work done on the fore section...... needs support areas on the outside for the supporting hackbut artillery pieces....

Thats coming along really well :-*

Nice scratch-building.
-
Awesome scratch building to meld in with the original to to convert it into something really cool to look at!!
Cheers,
Carl

Keep it up, this is great!

Wow, this got out of hand quickly, in the best way possible of course. :) Wouldn't have guessed it would turn out looking like that based on your initial picture. :o
-
Nice curved bottom step and detail overall.
-
Amazing. When it's finished, I want to own it! :-*
-
A wonderful addition to the genre of fantasy renaissance wargaming. I look forward to seeing it completed and crewed.
-
Amazing. When it's finished..............
Finished????? What's that??
:D
-
Finished????? What's that??
I'm sorry, I meant when you decide to abandon the project, I'll trade you for it. ;D

My poor old mum suffered from a stroke the other weekend so have been in and out of Bodelwyddan hospital in North Wales for the last 2 weeks or so. Operation today and now at Wrexham hospital so will be visiting there later..... anyway, last addition to the ship was a rear section...early days as usual....I make it up as I go along so we'll see what we see when we see it!

Sorry to hear about your mom, best wishes to her and your family. Very nice work on the ship! are those big silver wheels on the bottom from plastic toy soldier cannon?

Thank you. Saw her today and is coming along well, all things considered!
The wheels were off eBay; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Trent-Miniatures-WHEELS-LARGE-SPOKED-WHEELS-Wargames-28mm-Diameter-/181985311740 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Trent-Miniatures-WHEELS-LARGE-SPOKED-WHEELS-Wargames-28mm-Diameter-/181985311740)

My thoughts with you and your mother too. The wood looks so loved/old having been sanded so much.
-
Great work! Can't wait to see more of it.
Just one thing bothering me... with that huge stern addition and the already largish forecastle, the four wheels it uses for support are looking increasingly fragile. I know this is fantasy and all, but you might think about adding more sets of wheels to make the whole thing seem more mobile. As is, I can see it all too easily getting bogged down in soft ground.
Or just ignore my observation. It's fantasy! <g>

I've been thinking the same Phil but not sure I have the will to change them now.....

Just back from seeing my mum and she's doing ok all things considered, thanks to all for your kind thoughts.
Latest update from the other night before I ran out of super glue....bought a load but it is very well hidden :-[

Interesting "outrigger" platform on the starboard side. Are you planning on a matching platform on the other side too?
-
I'm thinking of a stable/platform for some cavalry on the other side but early days as yet!
-
Your Steam Thingy is a WONDERFULLY outlandish, HIGHLY imaginative creation. OUTSTANDING WORK!
I hope your Mom continues to progress in her recovery.
-
A little update....staircase....not sure what else for the moment but only time and vodka will tell.... :D

A land-bound dwarven battlestar? Goat-riding interceptors? Some kind of mounts that have a really solid charge and rip & tear with the best of them, but don't have the endurance for a whole field battle's worth of manoeuvring? Big cats, perhaps, for the pounce. Of course, then you have to stick Hasslefree's dwarf Adama & Tigh on there somewhere.
Really nice model so far. Can't wait to see what happens with it - the thread's title really doesn't do it justice.
-
Outstanding so far. A work of mad genius, utterly brilliant.
-
And last one for now.....2 swivel cannon for the rear.

Just about finished barring the figures, base and tiles for the cabin.....although sudden thought is a figurehead needed????

On my stalled project I used one of the Foundry cherubs as a figure head if you have any of those?
Lousy pic but you get the idea:
-
Good idea.....I have a bunch...somewhere.....
-
Cherub? as a Dwarf figure head?
That doesnt sound threatening, grim, dour and practical enough
-
I guess not. It's very much renaissance period though. lol
-
Maybe a bearded cherub/putto?
-
Just a beard? It's on land, so streamlining and elegance is less of a concern. A grim line for the mouth, and a majestic braided beard sweeping away to either side.
The forward cannon would be the nose.
-
A huge menacing hammer of pickaxe would make a terrifying figure head for dwarven vehicles!
-
How about simple ultilitarian dwarven practicality without ornamentation?
Surely the function of the device is what matters. You're a dwarven engineer not some flower-waving pixie-fiddling pointy-ear!
Survivablity and lethality matter, not whether the intricate pierced enamel work of your chariot matches the lacework of your bloomers!
;-)
-
and finally some tiles on the cabin roof.....no excuse not to start painting it I suppose........

Or pack it up and send it to me, I can not paint it too. :-*
