Well, all this talk about Genestealer limousines got me so excited about (finally) building one, I could not wait and just had to get cracking.
It's been a while since I've posted anything on the forum, but that does not mean I have been idle; I just couldn't be bothered to go back, set up, take pictures, crop/resize, upload and then write waffle about them. But I'll behave better again from now on, promise... :D
Right; the limo. It's been quite a few years since I scoured the toy stores for model cars, but I had high hopes of scoring just the right base for my conversion. Well, no...
I had no idea how difficult shopping for a simple toy car has become! I had been looking for a thirties car, preferably in 1/43, but those were impossible to find in 3 toystores and another 3 discount stores. What?
So I decided I could also settle for some fifties hod rod perhaps? I lowered my standards; plastic, die cast, wood, anything. But I could not even find a single, suitable Cars toy. Go figure! :?
On to the interwebs then. Same story basically; I could not find any of the sweet rides I had seen being used as a base for limo conversions. So, on a whim, I began searching for larger scales also, as some examples I had seen actually used 1/25 scale cars.
And then, by accident, I stumbled on this awesome German staff car:
I immediately knew that this one would be my project!
Searching on, for just the tiniest of moments, I was tempted to go with this crazy contraption here:
But in the end, I found it too crazy (and probably too expensive as well), even though it would fit in like one of the locals in a 40K environment. ;D
No; I stayed true to my idea and set out to the local hobby shop to find my staff car. I knew by then that Revell did one in 1/35, and I had seen that particular box in the store, so I was confident that I could score my car and get cracking.
Wrong again. ::)
They did not have it, and being the impatient git I am, I had no desire to wait for an Ebay purchase to be delivered or for the store to order one.
So, I looked for alternatives, and managed to find two possible candidates;
and
(http://www.fierylions.nl/Pictures/ForumPictures/GenestealerCult/Limo-WIP1.jpg)
After much deliberation, I finally settled for the latter. It was the closest to my original idea (it being German), but also the lines of the vehicle 'spoke' to me a bit more.
Besides; I did not have enough money in the meter to dally any longer anyway... lol
When I got home, I put the box on my desk, as I knew I would not be faffing around with it anytime soon, since my 2 year old is pretty ill and demands constant attention/attendance. I even had to cancel my regular gaming night, as I prepped myself for another night of nursing duty.
But in came my wife, stating that her girl's night out was moved a day forward, so she would be taking care of the little one tonight and unexpectedly I was free to get cracking!
Which I obviously did with gusto.
I immediately decided that the most important feature of the staff car, the double rear axle, would have to be converted; it was just too cool and just what a limo needs, when driving around a chunky Patriarch.
So that was my first stop:
Basically, I sawed straight through the chassis (with attached wheel wells), added a length of plasticard and glued the end bit back into place. Braces underneath were used for extra stability and strength. Then the insides of the wheel wells were closed off by first using a bit of card to trace the exact shape required, then that was transferred to plasticard (x2) and glued into place.
The curved fender/wheel well was created by taking a piece of square tubing and cutting it in half, lengthwise. Then the corners were filed into curves to match those of the kit, and after much test fitting, they were glued into place. Then, after letting them dry for a bit, I filed/sanded both inserts completely flush with the original parts.
Then it was on to the grille, which just has to be imposing and intimidating. Only the basic shape is done for now, but hopefully you can already see where I'm going with this beast:
I intend to keep it very low to the ground, maybe one or two millimeter raised, but no more. Also, the cab will be closed, so walls and a roof need to be constructed. And trimming, rivets and much gothification need applying too.
That's all I have for now, but stay tuned for the next episode of Pimp my Hive! :D

Oh man, this is going to be good...

Looks good - and the 'Finding Limo' bit was interesting too. Looking forward to see more. 8) 8) 8)

Yip, I agree, I can sense it in the force also!

Great project, I'll follow this with interest and
steal take inspiration from...

Oh, yes!
The first of the limo's has begun.
:-* :-*
(Incidentally: I have almost finished the 'driver' to accompany all these motors....)

A very promising start 8) 8)
I won't be able to start mine until after Salute :(

Looking very good! :-*
So it will have double wheels at back or tracks?
-
This is great! I'm genuinely very excited to get the cult models, they're really very good.
-
Good to know you finally got some hobby time in.
Looking good so far.
Can't wait to see how it ends up.
-
Thank you gentlemen; always good to know people are paying attention to my bodging around... :D
Hope your kid gets better quick.
Same here; the antibiotics are doing their job though and she's improving (but still adept at causing sleep deprivation ::) )
Paul; stop teasing everyone and show us your driver already! ;)
So it will have double wheels at back or tracks?
Double wheels; it's a luxury vehicle after all.
I originally envisioned something along the lines of the car in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, with a double axle in the front. In fact, that whole car would just be perfect, if it only had a closed cab. Unfortunately though, there is only one kit available (in 1/25) and it is hideously expensive. It could turn out awesome ion the right hands though.
I toyed with the idea of doing it with my version as well, but the curvature of the front fender and bonnet made that too difficult. Besides; the double rear axle idea had already taken root... ;)
Good to know you finally got some hobby time in.
I take what I can; this came as a bit of a surprise. Too bad it was too late to let our game go through after all. My ships are all lined up already too. Still; I did get to cut and glue plastic, which is always nice of course.
We're so on for next week though; I'm starting to suffer from X-Wing withdrawal... lol

lol lol
Well, as a preview comment, I have made him 'standing', as in waiting alongside his motor in a 'chauffeur' style.
He could easily be 'chopped' so that he can be sitting in the seat but this way he works in both ways (and if I made him in a 'driving' position he would not always fit into what you all make.
Piccies later when I have finished him properly.
;)

Great start, can't wait to see more. :)

Ah splendid - that gives more flexibility.
I'm waiting for bits to start.

Brilliant start! I really enjoyed the story so far, thanks for including it :D

Great start to that. Loving it.
-
Thanks guys :)
@ Dezmond; that's exactly what I originally had in mind! just marginally too late, but thanks anyway; it's been filed for future reference (you never know when you need 2 limo's after all :D ).
Not much in the way of an update, but I managed to do some very small work on the grille. It's been filed and sanded into shape, carefully matching the curvature of the front of the fenders. Then a bit of mesh was added, to provide a basic texture, and I've placed the first of the vertical bars that will form the actual grille. I'm thinking something suitably predatory, so I may try and add an illusion of fangs to it.
I then added a thicker edge to the bottom of the grille, to function as some sort of bumper perhaps. The plastic (semicircular) rod was curved sideways to match the previously shaped curvature, but I'm not 100% convinced of the result just yet. It might end up being replaced, but bear in mind that this is just the rough shape. The idea is to continue the edge along the entire front of the vehicle, but I'll have to break out the putty to make some of the curves. Oh; obviously rivets will be added eventually... ;)
I'm determined to work in as many curves and organic shapes as possible, to avoid the vehicle looking like something rounded that just had a bunch of flat surfaces glued to it. It also challenges me to get creative with the use of my materials and shapes. I hope to achieve an end result that looks as if the limo was designed like this and not converted. :)

Nice. :D One to watch. The few bits you've already done look good, and very promising.

This promises to be a classy motor!

Superb project, great post! This sort of thing is dangerously inspirational - I had absolutely no intention of getting involved in the whole genestealer cult craze, but reading something like this makes me wonder!
I will probably just be happy to read your progress with interest, Daeothar. Keep up the good work, and also hope your little un gets well soon - nothing worse than watching the poor little blighters suffer (and the lack of sleep, of course!).
Awesome project though, fantastic. :D

Baby step update again.
Edged the grille, but I'm not quite happy with it yet. It'll probably be changed along the way.
Started on the hood as well. Added some interest in the form of some relief on top. There will be tubes/pipes coming out of the hood, but I'm still contemplating where they'll go. I'll most likely go with an exhaust system, running along the body of the car all the way to the rear.
I've also found my perfect hood ornament; the almost Genestealerlike skull embellishment of the Conversion Beamer on the RT era Chaos heavy weapon sprue. It'll be mounted on top of the yet to be attached radiator cap, as soon as I have resolved the grille thing...
-
Coming along nicely, sir.

And that radiator cap sounds perfect.
:D
-
Great stuff!
I need to think about some transport for my Cult
-
Excellent!

Another update. I finally managed to attack the grille in a satisfactory way. I raised the edges of the grille so they are slightly elevated from the vertical elements of the grille proper.
Those were simply fitted and then superglued into place. All the gaps still require puttying, but I'm saving all of that for one big job when the front is finished.
This includes the larger bar on the bottom. I've decided to make that wrap around the entire front and then capped off at the corners. However; those will have to wait for me to first close off the front fenders. That'll be the next bit, right after I finish off the exhausts.
I'm already deviating from my original plan of making this look like a factory finished limo, by adding a ridiculous exhaust manifold construction on the outside of the body. I think this gives it a bit more of a hot rod feel, and besides; this is 40K, so over the top is the norm! lol
Obviously they still need finishing, as the one I've done (the other side will receive a (hopefully) identical one) is still quite rough and gappy. There will be some sort of rings around the pipes where they decend into the bonnet.
I'm figuring right now, that the pipes will end in the jet exhausts of two old Dark Eldar Jetbikes I have lying around, as those are shaped just right and have a very appropriate look to them as well.
And finally, because in the end, I'm always about the details, as a bit of extra fun; the first of the two headlights. It's a simple case of using some CSM Rhino exhaust bits fused to the kit's headlight backs, and the mouth of the CSM bit carved out to fit a small gem I had lying around.
The gems (I only have 2, so I'm careful to not misplace them) are from a hand-made card I received. They're perfect, because they're very shiny, but also have a purplish tint, which will fit really well with the paintscheme I have in mind. 8)

This just gets better and better. 8) 8) 8)
Hmm, only one gem in the pic, hope it's not lost already! :(
-
Beauty - can't wait to see this finished, the grill is excellent. I'm starting work on my new GS cult minis this weekend, very excited!

This is great.

Sweet dude,
Love the pipes
-
Those headlights look the bomb! :D Spot on, think they will fit the limo's theme perfectly.

Gotta agree.
Good thinking, Batman!

Those pipes look the nuts too, although I dont envy you having to mirror them.
Looks scary!
:o
-
Looking great.
How did you bend the pipes?
-
This is turning into one beautiful build - I want to build a limo, but I just haven't found a base model that screams "Cult" yet.
-
Really great project!!!!
-
What if you don't mirror the pipes?
Consider the early racing cars like bugatti type52. The straight 8's exhaust was all on one side of the hood! Some straight 6's had 2-into-1 at the engine , with only 3 exhaust pipes running out the hood to join for one pipe out along the side.
Or you could consider motorbikes like the Honda cl scrambler where the right side exhausts bend around the motor and run parallel with the left pipe.
Just some options as that mirroring could be a little difficult.
I like the headlights though, very league of extraordinary gentlemen 8)
Cheers
Matt.

Cracking work so far 8) 8)
I like Bertie's point but I thik it would need balancing with something on the other side. An RT machine gun under a cowling ???
cheers

The asymmetry idea is one I might steal :D
-
Love it :D
-
Once again, thank you gents! :)
...only one gem in the pic, hope it's not lost already! :(
No worries; the other one is still safely attached to the aforementioned card; I only took this one off to fit it. Once I do the other light, I will put this gem back, as I will only be attaching them permanently after painting.
There are also two larger ones and a really large one of the card, so I might eventually use one of those for a searchlight maybe?
...How did you bend the pipes?
Well, for starters; they're not really pipes, but rather, they're made from rod. And I simply bent them slowly by hand, sometimes using the handle of a brush to curve it around. Do it too fast, and they'll crack, but done with a bit of patience, you can even re-bend and correct at leasure.
That alone makes that I'm (still) confident I can replicate the first set.
Bertrand, you make a good point, however, I'm going to try and replicate the pipework first. Only if I find it is really impossible to make a (good approximating) mirror set, will I consider that.
I had already thought about it and had an idea of having pipes run over the bonnet from right to left, attaching to the existing pipes. But that's only when I'm not able to make it symmetrical.
Coincidentally, the model kit I'm basing this on is also asymmetrical. It has two doors on the left and just one on the right, with a large radio set where the door should be. Also, another limo conversion on the web that I have been drawing inspiration from, has a cilindrical gun turret/tower on the right hand side, which could be a good backup idea. I do plan on an MG on the roof, be in it a turret or pintle mounted, so making it offset from the center is always an option.

My parts have arrived in the meantime, so I'll be starting this weekend. :D
Lots of inspiration here!

Cool! Get started, so you can post yours; I'm curious to see other rides too, if only to stay inspired and focussed 8)
-
Aaand we're symmetrical again! ;D
It wasn't as difficult as I had feared, even though the left and right sides are not exact mirrors (there are some (very) minor differences), but if anyone is able to see both sides simultaneously on the table, I suppose there are other, more urgent problems to be addressed first... lol
(http://www.fierylions.nl/Pictures/ForumPictures/GenestealerCult/Limo-WIP10.jpg)
Also, I shaped the second head light, so the symmetry does not end with just the exhaust pipes either.
Next stop will be the front fenders, which will be closed up, before proceeding to the biggest challenge; the cab and roof. Can't wait... :D
-
Superb!

This is really coming together well.
I cant wait to see more progress.

Great stuff :D

Yip, it's official......it's going to be a stonker! :o
I always love the detail you put into your builds mate. And if those headlights are any sign, we're not going to be disappointed! :-*
-
Very nice - I'm trying to picture it in colour already :D
-
Nice! :)
-
Thanks gents; that coming from some of LAF's resident master builders does not add pressure at all... ;D
Very nice - I'm trying to picture it in colour already :D
Think black and purple, with gold details and chrome pipes then... ;)
Some small progress again; I closed off the front fenders, to give it a sleeker look. The glue has to dry first before I can sand the whole side of the fender/wheel well flush.
Eventually, there will be raised detail in the form of a decorative strip all along the vehicle. I'm thinking either some old school 2nd edition gothic spikey type borders or, alternatively, borders styled in some sort of Tyranid/tribal look, as can be found in the 2nd ed. codex.
I'm leaning towards the 'Nid idea right now. This is going to require some freehand designing I guess... ::)
-
Very impressive andstylish too 8) 8) 8)

Awesome work! Especially on the pipes. Bending plastic tubing is a real PIA. Props to you.
Cultist: "Do think the genestealer headlights are too obvious?"
Cult Magister: "Nahhh...they look great! Don't worry about it."

Hey, Daeothar, what's the latest - we're starved of progress! :D Appreciate that ol' real life might be intruding, but hope you have time to post the latest soon as it will be great to see where you're at with this.

Aarch! ;D Guilty of succumbing to the 'ooh shiney' demon (yet again); I got sidetracked and repainted a host of X-Wing minis instead... :D
That usually happens when my flow gets interupted/broken. Either by realworld factors or by snags in the process. And as it is, I'm kind of on the fence on how to proceed with the roof, and by extension, with the rest of the bodywork as well.
I dug out a veritable traffic jam of 1/43 thirties cars from my interbellum project as reference, lining them up in a semblance of design evolution. I'm torn between a look like the car Dezmond posted (top of page 2) or a more swept/aerodynamical look. The last one is more modern, with the roof and side walls being integrated and rounded, where the older design has straight side walls, with a flat 'stuck on' roof, usually a seperate part.
The older design is easier on the build, where the newer design is easier on the eyes. ;)
In the meantime, I did make running boards inbetween the wheel wells though. With a diamond plate surface. You know; for those inevitable cultist bodyguards hanging on to the vehicle during riding tours, parades etc...
I promise to post updates soon again. Only Slave 1 and the Andrasta to finish up, and I'll be up to date with my X-Wing repaints again. Until my Gozanti arrives that is... ::)
-

Equally guilty - in my case by Ad Mech and Space Marine flyer conversions - at least I have the (fragile) excuse they're antagonists to the GS cult.
-
No problemo dude, it's the perrenial gamer's problem (and prerogative) so no accusatory finger here - it is just that I am enjoying your project so much ;)
-
That's a rather mean machine looking forward to seeing that beast completed.
