Title: Italian front terrain help!
Post by: Sir_Theo on 04 March 2016, 12:07:19 PM
I want to put together a collection of affordable and suitable terrain for Italy and I'm on the look out for any suggestions, 28mm as a preference.

For buildings im leaning towards Hovels Spanish stuff as I can use that for a potential Penninsula project further down the line. Any other places people could point me to that I should be checking out?

The Italeri 1/72 stuff. Works with 28mm. Easily converted. Looks the part.

I second the Italeri buildings - they do fit 28mm but good luck finding the country houses as they do now seem rare, and expensive when discovered

I got some 20mm stuff made up by this seller on Ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/tinned-fruit and it looks OK with my 28mm. I wanted buildings that would pass for generic "Mediterranean" so I could use them for Spain, Italy or Greece.  There is a picture here https://sites.google.com/site/tringwargames/features/chain-of-command-italian-campaign/final-game.

I have some 25mm Medieval Hovels and they are very small, I'd say they were nearer 20mm height wise, but with a much reduced footprint. Also you cannot take the roof off to put figures inside.

As for what terrain to get, I gave this quite a bit of thought when I started my 20mm WW2 Italian collection, as I wanted it to also pass for the Balkans and other areas. I've gone for a few plastered buildings with red tile roofs, some tall plastered walls with tile tops (for use in villages/villas/farms), some low rough stone walls (for countryside) and some scraggily hedges and trees, nothing too lush.

For crops I made up rows of vines from some railway sets I picked up on Ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JTT-Scenery-Products-Grape-Vines-Pack-of-24-for-00-HO-Model-Railway-/371548247493?hash=item56820055c5:g:m0EAAOSwgQ9VmWeZ and got some 15mm wide-spread trees to act as olive groves, I went for these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12-x-15mm-sculptured-trees-suitable-for-flames-of-war-/201530926741?hash=item2eec2de695:m:m3LVLM03ldRfDtbVCx5n7zQ . Like I said everything is aimed at passing for the generic "Mediterranean" look rather than being too specific to one region.

Have a look at the Grand Manner web site? The Spanish terrain doubles up well?

The Warbases Modular range is cheap and cheerful and ideal for generic Mediterranean buildings
