Title: "Supplies to the blockhouse" A French and Indian Wars AAR
Post by: Malamute on March 12, 2016, 02:06:08 PM
1757 The war on the continent continues with French forces and their Indian Allies continuing to raid Anglo/American settlements. Somewhere in the Mohawk valley two companies of the 77th Regiment of Foot under the command of Captain Archibald Ballantyne are escorting a supply train to a remote blockhouse and farmstead unaware that a French Canadian war party is heading their way...

Overview of the terrain light woods surround the farmstead and blockhouse. The British column will enter from the bottom of the photo along a narrow road leading to the settlement.

The settlers go about their business unawares an attack is imminent.

The British column make slow progress along the track, as the first Highland company edges towards the settlement hampered by the slow moving wagons and civilian drivers.

The British are unaware that to the west a war party of Huron and Canadian Milice have been tracking their progress.

The French Canadian officer Capitan Henri La Longue-Baguette orders his forces to advance on the Highlanders whilst a group of Huron break off to attack the blockhouse.

The Huron charge the blockhouse startling the inhabitants, a group of Colonial militia:

The militia manage to get off several volleys, but their fire is ineffective and the Huron quickly set fire to the blockhouse

The Milice edge closer to the Highlanders and when in range open fire

The first Highland company pivot and form a firing line, unleashing a volley on the militia. Unfortunately their shots fail to find many targets as the Candians take shelter in the undergrowth

The combined fire from the Milice and their Huron allies starts to take its toll on the Highlanders.

The blockhouse burns quickly and the colonial militia decide they've had enough fleeing the building before it collapses, they run into the woods for their lives and are not seen again. The Huron who have fired the building see there is nothing to prevent them from raiding the farmstead and charge straight into the settlers

Sadly Ma Evans offer of a potato does no good and the settlers are killed. Unexpectedly for the Huron the farmers put up a strong fight and kill several Indians in the process. Tough lot these Welsh immigrants.

The fight continues for the Highlanders as their second company enters the battle

The wagon and civilian drivers are unable to move forward.

They panic and start to run.

The Highlanders manage to destroy the Canadian malice with more volley fire, but their numbers are diminished by continued sniping from the Huron hiding in the tree line. Eventually the Indians who have been attacking the settlement join their brothers and  with sufficient numbers they charge the remaining British

Captain Ballantyne's last stand with two companies of the 77th regiment laying dead and dying around him. War Sachem "Hordes Many Things" will soon lift his scalp.

The civilians having seen the Huron slaughtering the red coated Highlanders decide its time to flee leaving the supplies in the hands of the French force.

A complete disaster for the JimBibbly's British force. In his defence his dice rolling was atrocious, not enough hits and the failed morale test of his colonial militia with them deserting the table cost him dearly. Also his slow movement along the road didn't help. We will try this scenario again in a week or two will probably giving the British another unit, maybe some Rangers and see how it goes. :)

Fabulous figures, terrain, photography and report, this is the type of game which the rest of us aspire to.  I particularly like the painting on the Indians and Monsuir Longe Baquette as I have his cousin Longe Cheroot and will use him as my model when painting. What rules were you using ?

Love those tree trunks - though they'd look much better on redwood or cedar trees than those generic K&M style trees.  Great scenario and some nice ideas to adapt to my developing carrying place scenario.

A question, though.  Wouldn't the highlanders have been alerted by the firing around the block house and not so easily surprised?  Or is that just because telling it in words and pictures doesn't always convey the time sequence on the gaming table?

A master's efforts on display.

The Huron and Milice were painted by Bugsda, Highlanders by Jeff965 and civilians and wagons by Phil Robinson and myself.

In the middle of making some terrain tiles with JimBibbly. Hoping to get rid of the grass mat as soon as possible!

We use Muskets and Tomahawks.

The attack on the blockhouse actually started after the first volley by the Milice on the Highlanders. So it is all down to my storytelling and the order in which I loaded the photographs. It's factually correct though. lol

There was a most unusual incident before the engagement began. A strange flying machine was seen moving across the sky above the battlefield. ;) lol

The indians skulked in the woods for a while waiting for a break in the shooting (i.e. waiting for all the Miliita activation cards to come out) before bravely rushing forward with tinder and flint to do the only sensible thing an indian can do to a blockhouse  :D

'Card counting' is one of the M&T quirks but doesn't really detract from the rules or game, it's easy to rationalise as the officers assessing the tactical situation, and it can backfire badly if you get it wrong.

Wonderfull.

While I still stand by my original statement. A one word comment is rather lame. I was on the bus and just wanted to be reminded of this thread later.

It looks like a really exciting game. I really like the Musket and Tomahawk rules. [must resist temptation to start a new project!!]

Those tree trunks look great are they homegrown? If so how? And if they are storebought then where?
