Title: Survey, 1:56 cars
Post by: CompanyB on 16 March 2016, 10:00:22 PM
Ok, so hypothetically, suppose a small miniatures company approached a vehicle manufacturer about licensing and recasting some of their models in their lineup as post apocalyptical vehicles...and they said, sure why not...

Then that same company wondered if they should just make a generic vehicle or two that anyone can bash up and convert.  Clean showroom model, or loaded with weapons and spikes. (makes sense, as another buddy of theirs is doing a kickstarter...)

What are the two most iconic vehicles that folks would be interested in?  both standard and altered for road battles.

Lets assume these can have viewable simple engines in them and wheels, hoods, doors, trunks, tops as separate pieces.

Maybe you could do a search on Google for the best selling cars in the US... or something like that?

For years it was the Honda Civic here, in the Province de Québec...

EDIT; I think that "regular/normal" cars and trucks would be nice. If someone wants a PA look he or she could add separate parts to it... Civilian, unmodified vehicles can appeal to people who want "scenery" for their modern or near future games...

Anything durable with simple components that are easy to replace or convert: A light truck - easily accessible engines and power trains, frame, interchangeable cargo compartment. Best bet would be a 4x4. Light is fine, but with the capacity to carry additional armour. Proven and used for decades in all climates worldwide: Mercedes UNIMOG.  ;)

Well, we already offer:

Toyota Pickup
Mercedes Unimog (all metal and completely modular)
Mercedes LAPV (basically a 2014 G wagon with armor plate)

I'd be for doing a couple of coupes...perhaps even an Iconic ford from down under...

Mad max style interceptor would have to be high on the list

I'd love to see a F-150, a Suburban or Expedition. Then a couple of the mid sized cars that out now and a Charger for modern US police would be cool. Your SWAT truck is cool but most PDs would usually only have one of them, there are lots of regular cruisers out there. Plus the full size police cars can be civilian-ized by leaving off the push bumper and lights.

I would say go for a few modern looking generic mid size trucks, and cars.

Oh yes a falcon interceptor would be rather boss.  8)

Perhaps for that one go the PAified look with supercharger blower and fuel tanks.

Vehicles for post apocalyptia? You need:
The Last Interceptor XB Falcon
'32 ford coupe
f-100 - including a chopped version to be painted red with a snake  ;)

Fun extras
LTD Landau
A wagon/pannel van? a Ford Customline
50's Ford Mercury
'68 Mustang fastback coupe

The more I think about it the more i think vanilla showroom cars would be the way to go, as long as the material/construction is easy to modify.
That way they can be jazzed up for PA or down for wrecks, or left showroom for modern adventures. Perhaps chassis engine fenders like your "Model T" with body panels supplied. A optional PA kit pack which includes supercharder, 50cal, and big muddies (AKA fury road) would be cool.

Cheers
Matt

Agreed... at the very least the first two would need to be the bacon and a mustang fastback...  Looking at the concept art, the cars are all just iconic body style, stuck onto a hodgepodge cage and huge engine  So pretty much like a Nascar stock car.  Makes sense since the first thing to be useless is anything with complicated elecrontics.  So all the old school cars would be the ones that can be rebuilt over and over.

Here are a couple bashes...just took the CAD of already released models/parts and recombined them (no damage or roll cages yet..)  I think we'll also need several sizes of Wheels.  We do have the formula one wheels from our Pookie!

I'd like to see a bit more of a stretch; maybe Landrover Defender, VW camper or bug, BMW 3 series, Volvo Estate, Mercedes C class?

Much more generic for around the world, post-apoc doesn't just happen in the US ya know!  :D

Once saw a Unimog Winnebago on it's way to Iceland (when we had a ferry link to such places  :?),  they needed a ladder to get into it but it would be ideal for post-apocalyptic, high clearance and rugged.

Something that can be easily converted (by us amateurs) but recognizable. Also conversion kits would be useful in general.

Aye but all but the volvo are available as diecasts.
I just want the Impala for Supernatural games.

I would also like a '67 Impala... and 2015 Charger. Both would be very nice options to have in 1/56th scale!

Absolutely this.

Every time I go looking at diecasts (or hotwheels/matchbox for that matter), there are lots of sports cars, muscle cars, racing cars, but you know what I never see? The kind of normal cars that would actually line the normal streets of a normal city on a daily basis. Maybe your hometown is different, but if a zombie apocalypse happens here, the cars parked on the street are not going to look like Fast & Furious or Nascar. I'm sure the Warboys would love to have a Ferrari to trick out, but how many of them are going to be left?

So to twist your question a bit: if I think of modern vehicles - which become post-apocalypse vehicles - the iconic ones for me would be:
1) Average, everyday, unremarkable car, of the kind everyone buys when they graduate, or get married, or get a "real" job, etc.
2) Pickup truck, if only because you can mod this into so many variations. The farmer's truck, a utility service truck, the survivalist's truck with camper, maybe even an SUV if you stick closer to the original styles. Maybe an ambulance and smaller delivery truck if you're tricky about it.

If you're talking about modern America, I'd add SUV and minivan next on the list, and some kind of van if you can't work off the pickup. That covers a lot of ground - just about any personal-use vehicle aside from motorcycles. The next step up would be larger trucks like UPS, or 20' hauler.

Another vote for basic sedan. And a large tractor truck :P

My votes would go to the sedans (honda accord/subaru impreza), pick ups (F-150/Dodge Ram), and vans (minivan or 10 seater). That would cover almost anything from about the late 1990's to foreseeable future and post apocalypse.

As to scale, I would say that it may be better to go with 1/50 rather than 1/56. Due to basing and the fact that 28mm minis are almost never sculpted to actual scale, 1/50 would be much more appropriate size-wise. That's what empress has done with their modern vehicles.
