Title: QAR ?
Post by: Svennn on December 21, 2008, 06:06:54 PM
I'm afraid I do not have anything as interesting as a Venusian expedition or anything like that on the go. This was more than a little influenced by the recent "Thunderer" post. Lots of ideas running through my head, Queens Air Rifles (QAR of the title) in VSF Afrika with some native crew or up against Chinese Warlords smuggling opium in a take along the lines of Oswald Bastable. Cannot quite envisage a VSF flying junk though.

Apologies for the poor pics - it was very awkward in my hobby room

That is truly excellent!

Really like the layout.  And I understand the Brits need reinforcements on Venus..  :D

Great model! Very colonial-looking! The wheelhouse is a bit overwhelming, maybe an open command bridge would have been better? But splendid overall.

Cannot quite envisage a VSF flying junk though.

Maybe use that hilarious flying noodle sampan from "The Fifth Element" as a basis? Or hang it below a balloon. Or use a stylistically "asianified" western vessel, like the various types of ship that made up the Chinese navy in the latter years of the 19th century.

I agree that it is splendid, but I think that the wheel house is fantastic and appropriate. Please share your blue prints with us. And what is the stand that you are using?

I'm afraid there are no blueprints although if you are really interested I can create some from the model. It started when a fellow LAF'er was looking for a flyer (Thunderchicken?) and I tentatively offered to scratch one. Then I saw this recent thread http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=8669.0 and liked the Thunderer picture and decided to have a go at building one.
Its all 30 thou. plasticard with a sheet of balsa for the decks. I spaced everything to accomodate figures on 2p coin bases. This obviously dictated a lot of the dimensions. The wheelhouse, gun turrets and rudder are removeable so I can use the hull again if I wish. Just taking the rudder off makes it into a conventional boat and this is why I did not build the lower hull piece. The wheel house was an attempt to follow the picture although I thought the lookout mast would make it way too top heavy on my model.

It was my intention to make a proper stand but just used the blister packaging from a model car in the photo's.

Thanks Svennn

Great stuff.  :-*

Do you have a Captain Bastable to go with it then?
