Hi all,
Delved into some historical miniatures lately after a lengthy break from anything tabletop. Had a crack at some Warlord Games Roman veterans and I've got to say I'm impressed. With all the silliness surrounding Games Workshop's recent endeavors I can well see myself going bread and butter men with swords. You know where you are with men with swords.
Anyhow, pictures:

I ran with the veterans moniker attached to the boxed set, giving the impression they've been battling through some barbarian hell-hole far from the frontier making do with the best they could cobble together, hence the various shades of red, the mismatched tunics and generally bedraggled appearance. The shields are free hand and I've taken particular care with the eyes which were a good challenge compared to heroic 28mm. Note to self: buy a smaller brush.
Thinking I might sell these on ebay to fund an upcoming trip as I don't have much use for a single unit of Romans and don't have any particular designs for an army of them; will keep you updated either way.
Hope you like them, I'll try and post any other future historical projects here too.
Cheers!

Very nice, but i think that the musician has a silver mask and that it is not his face?
-
Thanks gefreiter. Ha, you know I noticed the same thing... after I'd painted his face...
I quite like how he turned out and he provides a bit of facial diversity so I don't have any plans to repaint him.
In terms of historical justification he, er... lost it, er... gambled it away, hmm, er... had it nicked by a Gaul. I dunno, something like that :)

Great stuff, the gore is very well done, they do certainly look like they mean business :)

They certainly do.
They look great.
I love all the battle damage you have worked into them too.
:-* :-*

That is one tough looking bunch! Very nicely done. :)
Cheers,

Well done!!!

Nicely done!

Nice work on the faces and shields. Should get you a bit on eBay with that quality.
-
Thanks for the kind words chaps.
It's interesting coming from a fantasy painting background that there's a certain style to a lot of historical stuff: understated shading with clean highlights and little weathering. I had fully intended to try and imitate it for these guys, but that fell by the wayside quite quickly (and fully fell apart when the gore special effects team came in).

When I seize power there will be a ten-year moratorium on legionaries with lorica segmentata and semi-cylindrical shields. Just to encourage makers to explore the far more frequent types that aren't on Trajan's column.
-
Fantastic! :-* I love those shields.
-
@FierceKitty: Ha indeed, I suppose generic is good for sales from the manufacturer's point of view.
@Andym: Thanks! They were fun to do actually, I was dubious initially but once I got the process down it was straightforward enough.
Thought I'd throw these guys up on ebay in the end and put any funds raised back into future historical projects. They've got 10 hours left on the clock and are currently going for a bargain if anyone happens to be interested: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222066840314?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
In other news I've been doing a bit of work on some SAGA vikings, something of an impulse buy as a short painting project. My plans to keep things simple went by the way side as they invariably do however, with some heavily converted berserkers in the works as well as the standard plastics. Will post some WIP pictures when I've got a bit more to show for them.

A bit grim for my tastes but fantastic work on the skin tones.
-
The smashed up shields are just brilliant. Well done. :-*
-
Agree with Richard on the shields, will steal that at some point.
Great stuff.

@Melnibonean: Thanks, ha very understandable. I've found a lot of people go for a very clean finish on historicals which surprises me a bit. Maybe my perception's just warped from the grimdark of GW. The skin tones were easy to do really, just a blended progression from citadel tanned flesh > dwarf flesh > bleached bone with some tanned flesh shading at the end.
@Captain Blood & Phil Robinson: Cheers chaps, however I've got to come clean in that I did no conversion work to the shields at all; the kit comes that way with damaged shields.

Ah, so that's what Warlord do with their miscast shields :)
