Title: Canadian Siberian Expeditionary Force or CSFE
Post by: Johnno on 25 March 2016, 09:58:20 AM
Hi all,

I've dabbled in BoB for so e time and have amassed a decent Chinese force, am planning for their Red enemies but learned that Canada had sent a small force over to support Britain.

The Canadians appeared to see combat around Archangel but spent most of their time in Vladivostok.
They were there in 1918-1919.

I'd like to field a "summer" force so little need for fur hats and gloves etc.

As the CSFE operated in 1918-1919 and the Great War ended in 1918, am I safe to use British WWI miniatures for my forces?

Secondly, aside from Copplestone's own British BoB troops, which British WWI figures best scales with Copplestone's BoB Chinese and Bolshevik troops?

I'd really like to use Footsore Miniatures Early War British. But are the uniforms and kit too far off?

Renegade Miniatures late war British ought to fit well enough with Copplestone. You can also use early war with some conversion if you want them to have lighter gear.

Brigade Games WWI and Storm in the East mix well with Copplestone.

:'( I found a comparison photograph of Musketeer/Footsore near Copplestone and I remembered why I went with Chinese instead. So small. I'm not sure that doubling the base would help or not?

I like Brigade Games' infantry but they have no cavalry. I wanted a small cavalry element.

I looked at Renegade as well. Need to sleep on that. Not really feeling them but they have what I need.

Hi, Johnno

There were two separate expeditions involving the Canadian Army into the Russian Civil War (plus several individual Canadians, such as Raymond Collishaw of the RAF, who ended up serving in various other intervention forces).  As you've noted, the Canadian Army contributed an artillery battery that saw action near Archangelsk in November 1918 alongside British and American forces in support of the Whites and against the 'bolos' (or Reds).  The CSEF was a separate expedition which saw Canada contribute a brigade-sized force to Vladivostok.

The CSEF really just hung out in Vladivostok and saw no significant action in Russia.  There was pressure from British Army leadership to dispatch the CSEF up the Trans-Siberian Railway to Omsk to support Kolchak's White forces, but the last thing Canadian Government wanted was to get dragged into the RCW at the time that everyone else was doing their damnedest to get out.  As a result, the Canucks mostly hung around Vladivostok then eventually shipped back to Victoria so they could be discharged to peacetime life.

As a fun counterfactual you could send your Canucks to reinforce Kolchak's army, but if you want to recreate an actual conflict, you should look at the Battle of Tulgas in North Russia in November 1918, but you'd need the troops in winter kit, probably the best bet being the Tiger Miniatures troops that Argsilverson mentions.  You'd also need Brits, Yanks, Whites and Reds to complete the game, and possibly river gunboat...

I like the alternate setting of BoB so the 2nd scenario looks good except having to acquire Brits,
 and Yanks too...my wallet groans.

Thanks for that information. Gives me some ideas.

You had them at council fires correct?
Or did you post them here?
I thought I saw them somewhere and they looked nice!
