Title: A turn up for the books - Paltzig 1759 - a very surprising reversal of history?
Post by: olicana on 25 March 2016, 12:41:53 PM
I've been playing war games for over 40 years and I've seen some bizarre, shocking and funny things happen in that time. But, I'm glad to report that, I can still be surprised at the way a game progresses in general.

I recently played a Paltzig [Kay] 1759 scenario solo to test it before unleashing it on my friends. I played it solo first because as a scenario it had all the makings of a complete stinker. I was surprised by the satisfying result [of my solo game] so I decided to give Peter and Graham a bash – to quote Victor Meldrew "I don't believe it!" What a turn up for the books! A very surprising reversal of history is in the offing...........

Have you had any games like this one recently?

This photo really shows what will happen there :)

Mass of Infantry (attack columns) vs thin line - effect is very Napoleonic :)
Most of the Russian line is facing no enemy.

Is Russian deployment dictated by scenario ?

Fastolfrus: Figures are Foundry and Front Rank.

awu:

It's the Battle of Paltzig 23rd July 1759, so yes, the Russian Deployment is dictated by scenario.

The Prussians are attacking in the first shot with 7 units of infantry. The Russians have 11 units able to reach the 'defence zone' on turn 1.

The Russian infantry facing under Fermor (15 units) can move to face the Prussian attack from turn 1. As can the Russian cavalry (4 units) and the Observation Corps (3 large units).

The Prussian 'columns', as you call them, are a series of lines. Attack columns were not formed by Prussian infantry in the Seven Years War. There is no attack column bonus, even if you form one. This is not Napoleonics.

The Russian 6 guns at the southern end of the line, that the Prussian infantry is marching toward, they represent about 70 field guns mostly in a superior position on a hillock.

Historically, the Prussians attacked with 29,000 men. They lost 8000. The Russians defending with 52,000 lost about 4,700.

The photo doesn't show what will happen at all.

Well it suggest. I do realize that it do not fit 7YW realities.

I don't know the rules either but this photo suggest the outcome.

It just feels Napoleonic :)

It would be interesting to see a map with movements from solo and second game.

Your tables always look amazing, so if I were the Russian general I won't care of the result.
