Title: Mars Attacks / General Post Apoc thread
Post by: MagpieJono on 29 March 2016, 10:34:05 PM
I bought the Mantic Mars Attacks game a while ago. It's a great little stand alone game and a great way to introduce the kids to the hobby. A bit of a cross between a board game and a miniatures game. I know the setting doesn't appeal to everyone's tastes but the rules and gameplay are simple but effective and a lot of fun. The rule set could easily be adapted to all manner of things.

The scenery is fantastic but the minis not the greatest, one piece bendy plastic stuff. I'm guessing to keep costs down. So I decided to replace the miniatures with suitable alternatives.

The martians are now GW Tau, human soldiers Cadian Shock Troops and the human heroes mainly Hasslefree.

A few shots and hopefully some battle reports in the near future..

Nice to see those Cadians put to a more "realistic" use than Warhammer.

Lovely work - very imaginative miniatures substitution. I'll have to consider this game for the Little Fish.

Great stuff.
I like the paint work on the bricks.
Sprayed?
Title: Re: Mars Attacks
Post by: MagpieJono on 01 April 2016, 02:16:12 PM
The bricks were sprayed black and then given a coat of Coat D'arms brick red followed by agrax earthshade. When dry they were drybrushed with brick red, rust and then dark sand.

While your substitutions are great, I'd like to chime in and say the actual Mars Attacks minis aren't as bad as they seem at first.

If you end up wanting to use them, clean the mold lines lightly with a file, then brush off the fuzz with a brass-bristled tool brush.  Any egregious bending can be fixed by dunking them in near-boiling water, correcting the bend, and dunking them in cold water.  Once cleaned and primed, they take paint surprisingly well.

I really need to take and post pictures of mine, one of these days.

Magpie, they all look great. A very creative solution. When temptation to do Mars Attacks! hits (which it does occasionally), I've sometimes considered using the Doctor Zardov figure from Bombshell miniatures as a substitute--a little pricey, but it's a great figure with some of the same vibe as the original aliens. But I like what you've done very much! Thanks for sharing.

Here's the Bombshell figure: http://store.bombshellminis.com/robots-vehicles/?sort=featured&page=2

Great stuff MagpieJono, if you like the rules you'll probably like Deadzone 2.0, it takes a lot of cues from Mars attacks(which was based on the original Deadzone)  without so many random things happening e.g. Flaming cows :)

Really like the substitutions and tau/guard make sense with the stats,
To join in with psychopomp the Mars attacks minis aren't that bad or the most part. (Some are awful mind you)
I managed to get mine looking decent so you should be able to do a lot better.

Thanks for the lovely comments guys.

Thanks for the link. I'd not heard of bombshell miniatures before. That Dr Zardov figure is ace.

JoeRugby
Lovely Martians there. I might give them a go at some point when the leadpile decreases a bit more!

I'm not a photography expert by any stretch of the imagination! The images were shot with my mobile phone camera, a 3 year old Samsung. I bought a Foldio folding studio a while back and the minis were set up in there. It's great and gives you cracking images I'd recommend it to anyone who likes to photograph their work. If I were buying one again though I think I'd buy the slightly larger one they do.

You're getting better pictures with a cameraphone than I get with my $800 Canon Rebel.  That's not fair.

NICE job!  Just noticed how you covered some of the zone/brick connectors with other things more visually pleasing....VERY NICE!!!

You should look into the DZ battlezone packs for other great accessories.  Although the regular zones might not fit into MA, the damaged zones have cool rubble piles with I-beams poking out :)

MA is a fun game too, played it a bunch.

I recently painted 40 Mantic plague zombies that I use with the Mars Attacks rules to make a fun zombie bashing game. I commented on a post by Asslessman who had also painted some and he asked for some snaps of mine.

These had the speediest paintjob I have ever done. To paint 40 in my usual way would have taken months in reality. I primed them with my normal dark grey and then gave them a zenithal dusting with white. Then I just blocked in the colours using Secret Weapon washes which are more like a glaze really. Think I only used 7 colours in total. Few final touches, spines, hair eyes etc but that's it. Not my finest work but perfectly acceptable for gaming and look good en masse.

Some individual miniatures...

'Shut up and concentrate on shooting!'

They're great, you did well to speed your game on those as they look just brilliant, the contrast with your other clean models totally fits with the theme and the group shot is exactly why we want zombies on the table !

I think the Plague faction is being re-vamped (or re-packed or something) for re-release for Deadzone 2.

Got a few more bits of scenery finished. First up some pallets again from Warsenal. Can be used in a variety of different ways.

Next up some barricades from the Walking Dead scenery booster by Mantic. These are lovely pieces really look the part as post apoc barricades hobbled together with whatever the people could find. Although the set contains three pairs the sides are so different you don't notice especially if they are painted differently.

So with the kids off school for the Easter holidays I decided that we should all have fun together pushing little painted men around a table and rolling dice. I set up a quick and easy zombie culling game using the Mars Attacks mechanics with me being the zombies and the boys being a group of survivors and a group of soldiers.

I started with 20 zombies running the long way down a 4'x2' mat with the boys trying to kill as many zombies as possible before they were overrun.
(http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/ad199/MagpieJono/Mobile%20Uploads/20170406_131558_zpsbu7aoh1y.jpg) (http://s935.photobucket.com/user/MagpieJono/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170406_131558_zsbu7aoh1y.jpg.html)

The survivors and soldiers move forward to get into shooting range.
(http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/ad199/MagpieJono/Mobile%20Uploads/20170406_131843_zpsuijumvdj.jpg) (http://s935.photobucket.com/user/MagpieJono/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170406_131843_zpsuijumvdj.jpg.html)

The zombies pour forward trying to keep behind cover as far as possible.
(http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/ad199/MagpieJono/Mobile%20Uploads/20170406_132740_zpscjkxm1we.jpg) (http://s935.photobucket.com/user/MagpieJono/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170406_132740_zpscjkxm1we.jpg.html)

But numbers dwindle the closer they get to the humans.

Some zombies manage to make it into close combat.

BOO!
(http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/ad199/MagpieJono/Mobile%20Uploads/20170406_145555_zpss1wwvaly.jpg) (http://s935.photobucket.com/user/MagpieJono/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170406_145555_zpss1wwvaly.jpg.html)

But the numbers of zombies left are not sufficient and although they manage to pull down a few humans, they are wiped up without too much bother.
(http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/ad199/MagpieJono/Mobile%20Uploads/20170406_150210_zpskufj8rc2.jpg) (http://s935.photobucket.com/user/MagpieJono/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170406_150210_zpskufj8rc2.jpg.html)

10 zombie kills per boy so no arguments after the first game.

We decided to play again but this time with me starting with 30 zombies to try and make it a bit more competitive. The boys switched soldiers and survivors for the second game.

Now that's a horde of zombies!
(http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/ad199/MagpieJono/Mobile%20Uploads/20170406_152430_zpstl8ysebk.jpg) (http://s935.photobucket.com/user/MagpieJono/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170406_152430_zpstl8ysebk.jpg.html)

The soldiers and survivors move forwards again taking great delight at being able to climb on the scenery.

But completely ignoring the winning stand and shoot strategy from the first game, the plucky survivors decide to meet the zombies head on...

To predictable consequences.

The zombies steamroller the left flank mopping up the last few survivors.

A thoroughly good time was had by all even though the second game was a bit of a butchering. At least starts getting them knowing about tactics. Another highlight was that no model or scenery piece got broken!

Good to see. You definitely learn more from your defeats. Lets hope the next time they play they choose tactic A again.

I am digging it! Especially the Mars Attacks.

Boy, did I buy into that kickstarter.  lol

I didn't know 4'x2' battle mats was a thing now. Cool! I will take one of those.

Now if only I had some incentive to finish painting the game...

The mat is two 2'x2' rubber backed mats laid next to each other. I think Mantic call them deluxe mats.

A few weeks ago I was looking through a for sale thread by Matakishi. He had listed a second 3d printed space shuttle. I saw it and immediately thought street toilet building. Sorry Matakishi! So here it is in all it's glory. A near future street toilet...

Just finished 10 post-apoc scavengers. Five are the Sewer Scavengers by Copplestone Castings and five are from Moonraker Miniatures but are also sculpted by Mark Copplestone. Lovely minis with bags of character. They really look the part as a raggedy bunch in mismatched clothing carrying all their worldly goods. Hope you like them!
