Title: VK 6600 E-79 in 1/72
Post by: Cpl Overby on 03 April 2016, 06:22:49 AM
VK 6600 E-79 in 1/72
I started this by requesting a friend of mine to make me a hull and turret to start from.
As per  my request he sent me both these items,
they were both hollow being made from sheet styrene.
So I began by removing items that I felt were either incorrect or not needed,
and filled the turret and hull with resin to make them easier to work with.

these are the items I removed from his parts

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03044_zpsrwjvaffb.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03044_zpsrwjvaffb.jpg.html)

this left me with this as my starting point

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03013_zpslj7mm9db.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03013_zpslj7mm9db.jpg.html)

as you can see I filled them with resin, and opened the rear of the turret more.

Now...here I have replaced the frontal armor,
the engine deck, added a Tiger II cupola, and started work on the gun.

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03017_zpss9mckbcf.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03017_zpss9mckbcf.jpg.html)

here I began building up the mantlet area with Milliput

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03019_zpsxuucazkb.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03019_zpsxuucazkb.jpg.html)

this is after several layers of Milliput, and starting the carving it to shape.

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03023_zpsqupoeyoz.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03023_zpsqupoeyoz.jpg.html)

Here you see the mantlet getting closer to the final shape

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03024_zpsnzgti150.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03024_zpsnzgti150.jpg.html)

Getting closer

here I spliced  loader's hatch into the roof, added a couple more items,
and started to mark out the details

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03025_zpsdzf9aeiw.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03025_zpsdzf9aeiw.jpg.html)

I neglected to mention that I also grinded away the tail end (sides) to my desires.

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03030_zpsyjsgaxye.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03030_zpsyjsgaxye.jpg.html)

here I gave the turret a coat of primer

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03031_zpshqueoike.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03031_zpshqueoike.jpg.html)

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03033_zpsqju7uhnp.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03033_zpsqju7uhnp.jpg.html)

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03034_zpst6ietpaf.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03034_zpst6ietpaf.jpg.html)

I am trying to stay as close as I can to this drawing of the E-79,
while staying true to the Panzer front concept.

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/12919692_1242345409109265_8944641104273553808_n_zpsqgmidv5i.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/12919692_1242345409109265_8944641104273553808_n_zpsqgmidv5i.jpg.html)

Here I began working on the front of the hull

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03036_zpsgc8ojchb.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03036_zpsgc8ojchb.jpg.html)

as you see I have played with the periscopes, and added a vent fan to the hull roof.

I decided the open the hatches for the Driver and radio operator.

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03037_zps2ha2suvw.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03037_zps2ha2suvw.jpg.html)

Here is the "lay out" for how I am doing the hull

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03041_zpsbxryu2nz.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03041_zpsbxryu2nz.jpg.html)

This is how the Turret looks on the hull

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03042_zpsdt7nfl7s.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03042_zpsdt7nfl7s.jpg.html)

here is an Over All  view showing the the turret and gun in place.

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03043_zpsc06czny0.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03043_zpsc06czny0.jpg.html)

well that is where I am for now.
Please tell me what you think.

Really impressive modelling skills, I'd love just a 1/10th of them.

Cheers,

Pete.

Thanks guys for your kind words,
I am moved that you like it.
here I have done a couple more things

If you look closely at the front of the Hull Mount for the MG....
you can see it is bereft of detail.

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03036_zpsgc8ojchb.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03036_zpsgc8ojchb.jpg.html)
So using my Jeweler's Engraving Tool I carved it out

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03053_zpsoxgrdav2.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03053_zpsoxgrdav2.jpg.html)

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03052_zpstfrm91tc.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03052_zpstfrm91tc.jpg.html)

I then drilled a hole for mounting the MG barrel, and a smaller one to represent the site aperture.

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03051_zpsbqt4hwli.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03051_zpsbqt4hwli.jpg.html)

From here I turned my attention to the rear end of the hull.
now more than one example I have seen of the E-79 shows no exhaust pipes.
I cannot accept this, so using  n example of a 1/35 model "with" exhaust pipes,
I decided to go the same route.

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/t3_zpsiuirw3pv.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/t3_zpsiuirw3pv.jpg.html)

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/img_0%207_zpsybvkfcwu.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/img_0%207_zpsybvkfcwu.jpg.html)

here is my attempt.

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03046_zps8nskuvf1.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03046_zps8nskuvf1.jpg.html)

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03049_zps2rivkvwj.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03049_zps2rivkvwj.jpg.html)

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03050_zpsjnhdvbcj.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03050_zpsjnhdvbcj.jpg.html)

My hope is that once all assembled.....
it will look much better

I love the scoring you do on the edge of the sheets, really makes it feel/look real.

Thanks,
that occurred to me a few years ago,
since I am a trained metal worker I had to cut armor plate with a cutting torch.

In my emails someone has mentioned that this looks like an E-10....
I could not agree more......
In my mind I see a "big" E-10, but with a turret.

I have now worked out my "wheel spacing" for the running gear.
seeing as this was such a pain to do One (1) time.....
I will mold this and cast resin to make two sets.
Then I will have what I need for the Left and the Right sides.

Thanks but it's not quite up to your quality!  Mine is a bit more rough and ready.

I particularly like the attention to detail on the plate cut lines and I can appreciate how hard it is to get curves like that turret and cast front piece right!
Interesting idea to fill with resin my tanks are always hollow but resin would certainly make them tougher.

Cheers
Rich

still...even if it is a bit rough, it can "cleaned up" :)
I was Jonesing for a Boarhound, till I learned what scale it is. :(

you say that is 1/56 scale, is that for 28mm gaming?

as for the detail on the armor plate.......
I am an Army Trained welder, we had to cut Armor Plate a lot,
so doing this only looked right to me. :)
No matter how much I work on the "curves" they never look right to me.
So at some point I have to say....enough is enough, and Drive On.
Yeah, I fill with resin because of the work I do on the parts,
if the were to stay hollow...... I might accidentally crush one while working on it.

Yes 28mm. I wish we played in a smaller scale as everything is cheaper!

you could start the push............
just start bringing 20mm items to the games.

Too late ive got too much 28mm.
Started moderns in 20mm and napoleonics in 15mm.  Next will be something in 6mm...

I decided to tackle the front hatches

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03054_zpsxphfzbzo.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03054_zpsxphfzbzo.jpg.html)

I decided that I want to follow the example set by ESCI on their Tiger II
I want these two parts

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03093a_zpspplefwrh.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03093a_zpspplefwrh.jpg.html)

So I shallow poured one of my molds, sand it thin, and surgically removed these sections

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03094_zpsohwbmbai.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03094_zpsohwbmbai.jpg.html)

I then grafted them to my hatch plate.

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03095_zpsykeao25d.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03095_zpsykeao25d.jpg.html)

in order for the hatches to sit "flat",
I took my dremel tool and grinded away one corner on each hatch
( I should note here also that I added a piece f .010 sheet styrene
to the top of the hatches to keep them from falling in all the time)

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03097a_zps2hzngwin.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03097a_zps2hzngwin.jpg.html)

from underneath you can see how well the fit

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03096_zpsk6ukipzg.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03096_zpsk6ukipzg.jpg.html)

next I needed the pegs to act as "pivots" for the hatches.

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03098_zps7g3grglg.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03098_zps7g3grglg.jpg.html)

and here is how they look inplace

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03099_zpsyexufgdj.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03099_zpsyexufgdj.jpg.html)

I hope these com out ok when I mold them

the more I handled the turret,
the more the chances grew that I would somehow screw it up,
or drop it, or something.
so I molded it and cast it in resin to be used throughout the final building of the model.

OK....I have taken a Long Break from this.....
I think I am finally getting back into the swing of things.
I sourced out the parts I needed, gathered them together
and finally got it to all fit together (for one side).....
This is how it looks

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03610_zpsrlpxwo6k.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03610_zpsrlpxwo6k.jpg.html)

(http://i1060.photobucket.com/albums/t455/lnerj72a/E-79/DSC03611_zpskyzw7yxa.jpg) (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/lnerj72a/media/E-79/DSC03611_zpskyzw7yxa.jpg.html)

This one side alone was an "All Day" project.....
so it's Break Time

OK I still have a little ways to go....
But I think it will be done by the end of the Weekend :)
anyway I have taken the parts I have and test fitted them onto the hull.
I will then do a final inspection of the hull before molding :)

Many thanks for all the kind words......
I have finally finished it :)

OK except for the painting.... it is done
it has a few "quirks" I did not foresee.....
even though I "test fitted" the parts over and over again
but it is done.....
I will put it on ebay either later today, or tomorrow.
but here it is :)

A thing of beauty; those lines and textures reflect the Beast it is. But it isn't a Disney movie.

Where did you get the ideas for all the little details, or did you based them off of existing German design themes? I assume that this is from World of Tanks right? ;)
