Title: Finding the right rules.
Post by: Zeebeest on April 06, 2016, 10:36:39 PM
Hi,

I'm looking for some good rules toplay some narrative games with human level supers.
It's mostly going to be the Batman. I really like dark gritty stuff featured in the new Daredevil and Jessica Jones tv series.

Would like to base my characters on the Batman I grew up with. Batman the animated series and 'Tim Burton' Batman.

So here is what I'm looking for:

- An open rule system, simple but comprehensive.
- The ability to make my own characters, both hero and henchmen
- Preferably something with a twist, something that adds an element of surprise

I play supersystem, and it,s a fantastic ruleset for true supers, and very open, but for human level supers it need some serious modding.

I've been reading the quick start rules of Pulp Alley and 7tv, both have some good elements, but I'm not to sure if they have what I'm looking for.

I could really need some advice from you fellow LAF'ers.

Greetings,

Zeebeest.

Ps: don't tell me to play the Batman Miniature Game, I own the rules, haven't played yet, but to me it seems too complicated to pick up and play, besides, wrong Batman universe :)

7TV is a derivative of the Lord of the Rings SBG and is somewhat limited by the D6 system.

Pulp Alley is a great system and I have used it for Batman games very good. Design your heroes and henchmen.

The other one you could look at is the Batman Miniatures Game from Knight models. You can download a free PDF of the rules and all the stats for the figures are downloadable too.

Pulp Alley is a good choice for narrative games that don't require a GM or overly complex rules. Campaign games work well and with the many expansion books, creating just about any character is possible.

My only criticism of the rules are that they feel very generic, when I was playing a lot of the game, it felt a bit "samey" after a while, even though we were changing up the leagues every game.

Thanks guys,

I found this on the forum (might need some updating though)

It looks like this is what I'm after, but still open to suggestions.

If you want a solo or cooperative system, I'd say that the Chain Reaction system by THW would work pretty well.
Larger Than Life, is their pulp rules and would be easy to tweak to be more Batman specific.
The tables allow you play a very narrative oriented game on your own with danger and the unknown lurking in the shadows.

Of course, if you want total control on your henchmen/ally, than the Reaction system might not be for you as you only control your character and sometimes friendly characters react differently than what you hope for.
"Robin, be ready to attack those henchmen... Robin?" and Robin has run off the table because he was shot at. :)

Power Legion from Ganesha Games might be a good one to look at.  You could also very easily use their other games Song of Blade and Heroes, Fear & Faith, and Flying Lead for street level supers with a little tweaking.

Thanks guy,

@Redmoa

I would like to have full controle over my models, but maybe worth while.

@wellender

I've been wondering about Power Legion for some time now. It seems to be the big counterpart for supersystem. I've read a lot of good things about song of blade and heroes and have been eyeballing song of the splintered lands for some time now.

I'll be sure to take a closer look.

Power legion is great. THis blog has a log of stats for supers http://dinahcatofdanger.blogspot.it/2015/10/power-legion-black-order.html  who ever does that site spent a lot of time making stats.

I quite like the batman game granted its not easy to just pickup and play but its very tactical and once your into it leads upto some very cinematic moments on the tabletop.

PowerLegion is great, it's true ! I would also advise Supersystem, but you have it already.

Thanks guys,

About BMG, I own the rules but haven't played yet.
I really like all the special rules, it makes it easier to have unique characters, but I don't like the fact that you have to take turns planning what to do and then do it. Seems to me, it would take up to much time, have some very indicisive players in my group.

So now to start playing all these games and finding the right one :)

it almost sounds like you want a blend of Tabletop and RPG...best choice for that is Savage Worlds.

TBH even at the tournament I recently went to. People plan at the same time as they have a rough idea of what your characters roles are most turns only some of the more complex characters require more thought.

Thanks,

I own a copy of savage worlds showdown, flipped through, but haven't read it completely yet.

As for BMG, I'll probably play it some day, just to see what all the fuss is about ;)

Supersystem is very fun to play, and once you get the hang of character building, there is no limit to what you can do.

I love it!

I always thought that A Fistful of Kung Fu had potential to be this kind of game, with a bit of house ruling.
