Title: Pyrrhus victorious !
Post by: Emir of Askaristan on April 12, 2016, 12:13:38 AM
Saturday saw the last in a series of game my friends and I have been playing using an adapted version of Neil Thomas's AMW rules for the Pyrrhic War between Rome and the Epirote king.

Beneventum is the least well described of the three battles, but we kicked off with the Romans being partially deployed on the slopes of a hill near their camp while Pyrrhus's army arrived over three turns from the woods on the edge of the table.

The Romans took a little time to form their lines which gave Pyrrhus time to get out of the wood and shake out into some kind of order. This may have been an important factor in the game because the Greeks were able to find enough open space to use their cavalry and elephants to turn one flank with dire consequences. The Romans were held up by some nifty dice throwing by the Greek light infantry which wore them down for the phalanx.

However it was the elephants which won the day.

All in all a good game with some good friends. Thought I'd share it here, more on my blog.

A great report and splendid looking toys, can't beat AMW rules for ancient games.
