I finally convinced my brother on giving a chance to Battletech (since he was already seeing a show on Twitch called "Death From Above", where they use big 3d-printed Battlemechs for their battle) and now he's devouring all my books. But the boardgame that I have is the old one, with cardboard counters, and buying the new one/assorted mechs doesn't appeal to me, since I really don't like the metal figures and I have zero interest in that scale.
So I've decided I would try and do a Mech game where I could use all the assorted 28mm stuff I have laying around. It won't be Battletech, but it will be inspired by it at least in the background.
The idea is having small Mercenaries outfits (couple of vehicles; a couple of mechs; infantry and, with some luck, some aerial support) that can be used in a RPG-like campaign where they can gain experience points(money :P), giving them options for buying more stuff. Of course I still haven't found the right set of rules to do this, but at least I'm painting and building miniatures with my brother!
The first "official" miniatures that I'm working on for the project are these ones: A Deimos Vindicator Laser Destroyer (Horus Heresy model), with some other resin bits added:

The build was easy enough but I'm not a Green stuff wizard, so I left lots of gaps visible. Hope to hide them later, with stowage for instance. Still haven't decided if I want to use the damn exhausts since they don't match the lines of the model, making it look old-fashioned. Maybe I'll just use 2 of them on the back? o_o
The other models are being assembled by my brother and are Gundams ;) Those cheap ones everyone is always talking about - bought a car-load of them from HLJ and from a local dealer. They will be Light Mechs on the setting (sort of bigger than power-armor)

I'll be following this with interest.

Predatorpt.
Great Start, as someone with a gundam project in the pipeline I'll be following your project with interest.
-
As someone who's been kitbashing GW stuff into my own SF creations, I salute your enthusiasm! Can't wait to see where this goes!
-
Thanks guys, hope I can keep motivated enough to finish this project!
-
You'd better; now we all want to see where you're going with this... lol
Great stuff. Is that Rhino variant an existing GW kit, or did you kitbash that? (I've been out of the loop regarding 40K kits for many years now ;) )
Loving the Gundams as well. They might be useful for my own project too. Whenever I check for Gundams these days, all I can usually find are the really over the top crazy ones with swords sticking out of their knees, guns the size of skyscrapers, ridiculous shields strapped to their elbows and enough stuff sticking out of their heads to make a moose jealous... ::) At least yours look suitably plain.
Keep it up; we'll badger you into continuing... :D

Ditto - not familiar with this one.
Looking forward to see more. 8)

I don't, but I DO love hearing that song with those words. lol
There were some 'museum' quality models (6"-8" tall?) for 'tech that came out long ago, but even those weren't THAT big. Honking, I say. :o
If you DO want to try closer to usual, but still larger-than-the-metal, you might have a look at the old cliccie MechWarrior mechs. I've been buying up some collections, but for the tanks and infantry. I've put the mechs up at the store for $5USD apiece.
They're soft vinyl, think Heroclix and Mage Knight, but the paint jobs are fair, and for large already painted figs, seems fair.
I thought that Deimos was an expensive resin...

Glad I surprised everyone, lol. The tank is a Forgeworld model of a 30K (aka Horus Heresy) era vehicle:

The Horus Heresy vehicles have very clean lines when compared with the usual 40k stuff. Since the Emperor was still alive and his cult didn't exist, we don't get the skulls/crosses combination we see in later vehicles.

Yeah, that was one of my problems. Most of the Gundams are over the top. But I've made a selection of plainer models. I'll take some pictures and post them here. Maybe it will help further projects like yours.

Thanks for the suggestions! I have some of the old Clix mechs, but the good ones seem harder and harder to find. I usually just see vehicles and those wonky Forestry Mechs.

Didn't surprise me; £51 is DAMN expensive to me.
Whether resin, plastic, metal, fromage...

Yeah, they are...unless you can get them cheaper. That's what I did.
For good gaming mecha the Zeon faction ones are the best. The Zaku variants being some of the best.
Some of my Gundams where bought after reading some of your threads, hope you like the selection!
Here's what I'm using right now and that I already posted on the thread:

And today was a very busy day. Some of you may remember the resin Osiris Battlemech that I was selling on my topic. After some thought I decided to keep it and assemble it. And it has been a nightmare! I've read that the original model has been retired due to the mold wearing out in 2012 and I guess that I ended receiving one of the last ones. There isn't a single a piece without a mold slip and I had to use tons of Green stuff to try and cover that. Also ended using plasticard :(

Sorry to hear about the Osiris, but what an awesome project!
I share your enthusiasm for Giant Stompy Robots in 28mm. Each year I run a 28mm Robot game at Adepticon (and sometimes Little Wars) using a variety of Mech models, vehicles and troops. Honestly I find 1/144 Gundams to be a bit small, but they are definitely affordable and look very cool on the battlefield. Our battles have units from Void, Kryomek, Sedition Wars, Vor, AT43, Dust, Mechwarrior Die Cast, Robotech Toys, Robogear as well as Macross, Gasraki and Gundam model kits and others I've probably forgotten.
If you haven't settled on a ruleset yet, I highly recommend Mech Attack. With doubled ranges (It's written for 15mm) it works great for 28mm and it is very fast playing while still containing everything you we love about mech combat.
You can see our Adepticon game from last week here:
http://www.chicagoskirmishwargames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=116
Both the Game at Adepticon and the playtest we did earlier in 10mm with rebased mechwarrior clix.
I'll be looking forward to seeing what you come up with for this project.

Thanks! Your posts are one of the things that me do this project. Of course you guys have some mechs that I could never find ;)
Does "Mech Attack" have rules for combined arms? Infantry, tanks and aerospace fighters? Never really look at that ruleset with attention!
And I just saw your latest topic here - I bought the same cheap train from China! o_o

Happy to be inspiring!
Mech Attack has Rules for Mecha, Infantry and Tanks. Aircraft rules are in the Beta phase and can be gotten on their forum. The author is working on a 2.0 version of the rules that should have them all in one place.
As for our units, some of the stuff we have is a alot less common (though still findable if you're patient) but much of it was just a matter of waiting for the kits to show up used or on Hobbylink Japan. The Macross kits tend to be out of stock alot, but they seem to come back into production every year or so and when they do they're remarkably cheap. The Tehnolog tank kits and robogear mechs are also super-affordable. I'm kind of a cheapo for these projects, but I can honestly say that over the course of this project I've probably spent the same-or-less for my 25-28mm mecha that I would have spent on 6mm metal BT mechs from IWM!
-
Someone else mentioned they found 1/144 mecha too small. This is a true and false. Yes they look too small to have a human pilot but they look big and impressive with 28mm figs. (the gundam seem to fit with any scale you do. from 6mm to 28mm they look in scale.)
I mostly agree. They definitely look too small to have a 28mm human pilot in the torso, but when the mech is standing up without having a pilot next to the torso, it's easy to fool the eye. Disregarding intended scale and assuming a pilot is in the Torso, alot of the mechs we use are probably more accurately sized for 22 or 25mm, but they're big enough that eye tells the brain they are the right size for the 28-30mm figures we use. If we were limiting ourselves only to 1/60 or 1/56 scale models, we'd need alot more storage space and alot more money.
If someone likes Gundam, I think the original 1/100 scale models may still be available. We've got a bunch of the old-style ZAKU in our forces and I think my buddy bought them from hobbylink last year. The only downside is that they are all the earlier (80's?) designs, but those look better to my eye anyway. Here's one next to an AT43 APC. As an additional size comparison, the base the Zaku is on is a standard CD.

These monster's look great in 28mm.
Table sizes and army purchase points will come into play here as well. On anything less than 6x4 one mecha a side will be enough and they will come in at a significant chunk of the army buying points.
In 28mm Mech Attack on a 7'x8' table each of 4 players can easily control 4-6 units (two infantry squads counting as one unit). On any size table once a player gets around 8-10 units the game bogs down a bit, but more is possible. Of course on a smaller table that's harder and on anything less than an 8x4, we typically play in 10mm anyway.

Yeah, I just checked forum, I think I'll wait for the 2.0 rulebook then. I guess if he has the layout already, he'll release the updated rulebook this year.

I'll have to take a second look at my Robogear mechs. I have at least 5 T-Rex already sorted out but I never gave much attention to the other mechs. I saw a topic on Dakkadakka (where you posted, lol) with some nice conversions. By the pictures of our games, you also ended converting some of them, right?
The only thing that annoys me on HLJ is the fact that they have thing on "BackOrdered" status for ages. I had some Gundams on that status for over half a year. And the fact that sometimes you can only buy 1 item :?

Hmm...never thought about those. They are bigger and even cheaper than the ones I already have. Time for another shopping spree I guess.... lol

I give your mech selection the thumbs up.

I would suggest thinking of them like the ED 209's in the robocop remake in terms of playing them on the table.
With our game last weekend I could not afford a mecha with my buy up points unless it was it and about half a dozen troops as the entire army.
I never bother when people say that the 1/144 ones are too small. I'll just say that the pilots are teenagers, like in some cases in AT-43
(http://wargamesfactory.lefora.com/attach/view/ma/a275cdc9f89841141d556f12087862298c3eb9ed.jpg)
Or maybe the smaller mechs will be controlled like drones (which is great in terms of a game where you can then try and hack those mechs...hmmm...)
What rules are you using?
-
I'm going to need more time to digest all the awesome in this topic.
-
we use a version of warengine called version 3.0. It is really focused on squad skirmish but we jiggle it around to make it work.
I loved Warengine 2.1, I'd really like to hear your impressions of 3.0 and what force lists you're using. Last time I checked 3.0 a couple years back it was HTML only (No PDF version) and didn't have any army lists.
-
Just a picture of my inspiration for the project, lol

Thanks Scurv,
Any chance I could get a copy of your army lists?
Predatorpt,
That Iguana is a stunning kit! Can't wait to see what you do with one. It definitely has the chunky BT vibe that is kind of my standard for what Mecha should look like.
Love your bookshelf also. I have the same collection, but mine is turned sideways. A couple years ago I completed my collection of Battletech and Mechwarrior novels, but I've only read about half of them. I'm kind of addicted to the sourcebooks too, even though I don't actually like the CBT game.

Yeah, my objective for the future is to get some of the old sourcebooks. As for books, I'm only missing "Warrior: En Garde".

My list is customised for post, post apocalypse gaming. It would be of little value to you I suspect unless you have renaissance technology mixed with pure Sci Fi like plasma guns
Actually, we play a good bit of post apoc and our original games of Warengine had kind of a post-apoc feel to them.

Unfortunately the Blog is no longer being updated. Most of our stuff get's posted in the public area of the club forum now http://www.chicagoskirmishwargames.com/forum/ though I usually post it here as well.

And no, my renewed interest in Weird War didn't kill this project. I'm spent these last couple of days painting various tanks for different factions/mercenary units. Unfortunately the pics aren't that good >:(

Hi Guys, Just found some ultra cheap robots at Dollar Tree. 6 inches tall, you can order them off the internet but only by the crate (24 IIRC). As you might have guessed, they cost US$1 each. UPC code 6 39277 95719 1.
Hopefully this pic will work, but my comp-fu is weak.
-
I am too late on the day, bit I will follow this with interest: always great to read about creative project like this!
-
Tsss...here in Portugal we don't get that kind of cool toys in our shops :\
-
I've got both of the Dollar Tree Robots. They are a bit crude, but they're nice and big and pretty good for what they are. They are Polyethylene though so you'll likely have to use special paint. I haven't painted mine up yet because I've got so many other mech kits to do.
