Title: X Wing starter advice
Post by: joroas on May 10, 2016, 05:00:03 PM
I just bough two starter sets and at the advice of a cheap retailer bought a few more.

I now have for the Empire: 4 Tie fighters, 1 Tie Fighter advanced and a Lambda Class.  For the rebels I have 2 X-Wings, 2 Y-Wings and a Millenium Falcon.  This seemed a reasonable amount, what do you guys think?  Do I need anything else?

Need: No.
You can have loads of fun games with just those.

Want: Of course you will want more as they are nice and highly addictive.
 :D

I already have more than that, about ten ships for each faction, but have not used half of them yet.
I HAVE restrained myself from buying more though....

You have been warned.
It may not do any good....

What, no Scum and Villainy ships?  :D

The Imperial Aces and Rebel Aces are nice sets. That gets you two TIE Interceptors in the Imperial box and an A-Wing and B-wing in the Rebel box. Since you've already got two A-wings though you might be better picking up a couple of Y-Wings. Check out Wordery for cheap boxes.

Mason is right with his advice though. Be warned!

If you fancied some Scum the Most Wanted box set is a good starting place with two z-95s and a Y-wing, all in Scum colour schemes.  They give you cards to convert Rebel Y-Wings to Scum too.

But, WHATEVER you do, don't pick up Armada, Assault, or Rebellion! NEVER EVER EVER.

As in do what I say, not what...  :'(

 lol

TOLD you I loved the little space ships!  :D

Where did you get them? Were they cheap?

Not that I'm interested.  Nope. Not me. I don't need any more.

Though I still don't have any Rebel Y-Wings or a HWK. Or any of the cool Scum small ships.

There are four paths-

1. The Battle- focus just on one movie battle. (Hoth, Endor, Trench Run)
2. The Tourney- focus just on the ships you need to be competitive. (Jumpmasters, Phantom Zone)
3. The Faction- pick a faction or sub faction and collect it obsessively. (Scum, Empire, Rebel, Black Sun, Rogue Squadron)
4. The Purist- Collect only the things found in the original films.

Not a great fan of tourneys and I tend to collect both sides for a game, so will probably just go for run of the mill games to start with.

Whilst I have been strictly on the 'Purist' path, you are forgetting the other option.

5. Everything!

Of which there are a few around here.

With two starters, you might want to consider the single TIE and X-Wing, mainly for the additional options those have for expanding what you can do with what you already have.

Guilty...  :D

The counter now stands at 81 ships. But honesty compels me to admit that 16 of those are non-official models for use in my Trade Federation project (which basically is creating a complete 4th faction for X-Wing  ::) ).

Trust me; with this game, Pandora will have her ankles next to her ears before you know it...

Run! It's too late for me, but maybe you can still save yourselves!  ;D

Well, I haven't played it yet, but I am good at stopping through finances.  I bought both series 1 and 2 of the original Wings of War, then stopped when series 3 planes seemed to gazump in price.

Well, to be honest, I've actually been put off by the most recent X-Wing announcement by FFG.

Q3 2016, we're to see the release of the 'Heroes of the Resistance' boxed set, with a new Millennium Falcon (square radar dish and apparently some other cosmetic changes) and a T70 X-Wing in Poe Dameron's Black Leader paintjob.

FFG were always skirting the commercial edge with X-Wing of course (and I still happily bought (and buy) stuff  ::) ), but this reeks of just cashing in.

I could probably live with the 'new' Falcon, and I'll survive the fact that I had already repainted a T-70 as Black Leader, but there's a pilot card in there for Poe Dameron, which is exactly the same as the already released one, but with one more point in pilot skill, which is just naff.

They have of course released fixes for pilots and ships for quite some time, and those absolutely have their place, as no amount of playtesting can predict how a certain ship will perform in local meta's. As an example; I think the upcoming Imperial Veterans box will 'fix' both the TIE Bomber and the TIE Defender, which see very little play right now due to their weak performance/too high points cost.

So I say they should have released a Poe Dameron specific card (perhaps as a 0 point Title?) which would fix his too low skill, because now, you'll have two exactly the same pilot cards, bar the pilot skill. Guess which one will never be used?

Then again; who am I kidding? I already know I will end up buying the box. Let's just hope this remains the only release I have my doubts about...

I'm actually very excited by the Heroes of the Resistance box, but to be fair I only started playing last year and have mainly focused on scum, and only started buying rebel/empire stuff when the TFA starter dropped, so don't have a falcon yet, and have been meaning to get a third T-70, guess that will have to wait

As for Poe, I'm not sure we'll only see one of the two, while PS 9 with a free EPT slot is better then PS8 with no EPT, if you don't have the points, you can field a PS8 Poe with adaptability for 2 points cheaper if you're willing to give up that EPT slot, I think both have their place in the right list.

As for what to buy next, I'd go with a TFA starter, the T-70 X-wing is a nice addition, and way better then the regular T-65, and Poe is a great Ace, even at PS8, and the TIE/FO also gives you some nice options for the Empire (or The First Order) with their S-loops

Don't think it's been mentioned yet - but there's another good use for X-wing ships.  There's an excellent fan made co-operative campaign to play through.  you can find it here:

http://dockingbay416.com/campaign/

I've played some of the missions with a couple of friends and the AI (Card based) can be quite challenging. Plus, it makes a change from adversarial games.

I recently downloaded that and I'm curious to try it out. Still have to print it out though.

Especially the coop-play interests me and I'm glad to learn the AI poses a real challenge.

I bought the Imperial Aces and Rebel Aces to go with my two copies of the original starter set.

My mouse has been hovering over the buy button on the Most Wanted expansion but, despite nagging encouragement from Malamute, I've managed to resist clicking.  :D
