Title: Warlord Games Hoodoos project
Post by: oabee on May 10, 2016, 09:25:22 PM
I was intrigued by Warlord Games Hoodoos, so picked up one of the small black/grey sets:

These come pre-painted, which at my age, has a special allure.  ;)
Warlord claim these are inspired by the hoodoos of the American badlands, especially those of Bryce Canyon:

I imagined them, however, as prehistoric standing stones--or rather, a standing pile of stones--marking a holy spot. A later culture has constructed a stone arcane circle amongst them, and now the holy--magical?--site attracts various leagues of adventurers in my Pulp Alley adventures (minis are 28mm):

The MDF board for my project is about 11" x 12":

Warlord's hoodoos seem to be constructed of bits of red-brown bark skewered on a quarter-inch dowel rod. In spots, the red brown color shows through the paint job, but I find that unobjectionable. Each hoodoo produced, then, is unique! They come in the above black/grey and also in brown/khaki, and in small and large sizes. Arcane circle is Thul'sa dum by Thomarillion.

Clever idea to turn these into the circle :)

Interesting way of making them - I did wonder if they would be cast lumps or split into parts / strata.

I'm in total agreeance...they look great but they are fragile! That's one reason I decided to fix them permanently to a base...figured they would take less abuse that way.

Also, to make the bottoms flat you'll need to do some sanding, which is not a problem, since they're soft bark. All in all a nice product, although I don't like the look of the large hoodoos. Though they might work as part of an alien landscape... :o

Tree bark makes a wonderful rock pile...check out my cliffs I use for my French & Indian War games...

I did not know somebody was marketing them...

Mike, where do you--and anyone else out there listening--find your bark for making that great terrain?

Hardware stores and some department stores should stock bark nuggets.  In Spring and Summer months it's easier to get hold of than Autumn and Winter as they are usually seasonal products.

I was just going to say. A bit of a scam, really, imo.

You could probably churn them out in an afternoon. I do wonder what the profit margin is on these, and whether they're being used to maybe subsidize the cost of something else. (I'm looking at you terminator...)

Hmmm. Could be why--nowhere I can find, anyway--Warlord never discuss how these hoodoos are produced.

Still, they are prepainted... :D

at £12/ box  I'd say the margin is quite high...

Given that you can buy a bag of bark pieces sold as reptile vivarium substrate for £5.99 that will let you make loads of them, I'd agree

I made a bunch for my 15mm sci-fi and didn't need to paint them - very quick and easy to make

I use my tree bark as rocky outcrops. Not as high & therefore less fragile, even so I always 'paint' them with a (slightly) thinned wood-glue. A second application (once the first has fully dried) around the base allows sand & grit to be applied around the base. this helps to merge the rock into the 'ground'.

@Doctor De'Ath

That looks awesome.  Very convincing.  I need to make me some of those.
