Title: The Mist: skirmish project. proxy miniatures search???
Post by: Commander Vyper on 11 January 2009, 10:32:37 AM
Right then,

Fitting in with my future/modern/horror stuff i fancy doing a few creatures that bear a reasonable resemblance to those squirmy, spiny, nasty things from the MIST.

Also found a few shots from the original CGI team too:

Suggestions needed:

Multiple tentacles enter from loading gate to devour Norm the bag boy. This particular creature is never seen again and only the tentacles from this monster are ever seen.
When the severed tentacle is poked it rapidly turns into a foul smelling liquid, willing to eat dog food.

Bigish flying waspy things: Apparently attracted to light these large flying wasp monsters have a very toxic neuro toxin causing massive swelling and death within a few minutes

Albino pterodactyl-like creatures which pluck the aforementioned creatures off of the store windows:These clumsy yet lovable flying dinosaurs love to crash into things if they didn’t pull meat out of one Tom Smalley’s head. If it weren’t for that this cute little guy could have been easily the star of a happier film and have been adopted by some cute little girl.

Spider-like predators each about the size of a dog, which hunt by scent. These have the ability to project acidic "spider-webs" which can burn through materials like cloth and flesh:

A creature with a scorpion-like segmented body with lobster claws that kills Ollie Weeks by ripping him in half

Funnily enough I'm leaving the ITC 'Impossibly tall creature' out for now, couple of legs might look a bit odd!  ;)

A few ideas so far:

Obviously loads of nid bits (spiders, scorpion/lobster).
Need some nice spiders, (will convert heads to look more humanoid/skeletal). Heresy or Ebob (may be too big).

http://www.urbanmammoth.co.uk/acatalog/Koralon_Blister_Packs.html (http://www.urbanmammoth.co.uk/acatalog/Koralon_Blister_Packs.html)

Possibly good for the scorpion/lobster with a few changes, and a few other creatures, especially the spider swam for juvi bugs too!

Bascially, slimy cthulhuesque creatures from beyond our reality. Nids seem like a good start but if anyone has any other ideas bring em on!

Cheers guys

Great flick and here is something I have used for one of it's creatures.

There from the Star War CMG and makes great proxies.

I also used some new plastic Rippers from the GW line as little beasts that terrorized everyone in the game.  Got them from Hoards of Bits on e-Bay for next to nothing.

Hope that helps,
Brian

Never seen the movie myself but I have an idea for your little spider monsters. The Doom boardgame box has quite a few spidery things inside...as well as a bunch of strange beasties to boot. Could be a little on the expensive side thou...

I was thinking of doing that too but Sunray Delta would rip a strip off my hide if I started another period.

RAFM has some nice kit that could sub-in for lots of your nasty critters.

All good advice ta.

Bought some AD&D odd things that will look great once painted up. No done anything on this other than that so far. Too much to do and not enough time etc...

Good luck on this project! The Mist is one of the best modern Sci Fi thrillers I'd love to see what you come up with.

Monsterpokilips also has a model called a 'spyfly' that would make a cool flying monster...couple more standard 'buggy' models as well...

The top creature reminds me of that spider thingy from the starwars arena scene, perhaps you could use a miniature/toy of that as a basis?

The White Dagoba Spider?  That makes a fantastic Lovecraftian Beastie.  I was either going to use it as a Outer God, or an offspring of one of the Great Old Ones.

I was thinking about the Acklay (http://"http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Acklay") in the geonosis arena. On second thought it might not be a perfect fit, but it should still be a good base for the bottom half.

For the first one, the plastic Aliens or the Alien Queen by Heroclix may be useful.

And Prince August is selling the old Chronopia drones of the Swampgoblins:

Out of interest who makes "the thing in the ice" - It's a Monsterapocalypses creature.

Bargain that, anyone without it should buy that definately, then watch it in colour and then the B&W version, totally different feeling, much more cthulhuesque.

Thanks for the prince august heads up may well get those though seriously contemplating just using nids as proxies.

I checked out some Tyranid things as they're getting a new codex next year. They've got a tentacle thing called a venomthrope that looks just awesome and would fit nicely in a Cthulhu game.

Well, I managed to buy it for £2.99 and have watched the colour version first. I'll try and watch the B&W one later this week. The colour version is a great film, so I'm really looking forward to the B&W one.

Possible bargain of the year  ;D
