For my 'Jamaica Inn & Thereabouts' 18th project, a Custom House 'Riding Officer' with his 'two pistols and cutlass'.
The wip conversion is from the Bokkenrijders pack by Dixon Minis.
http://www.dixon-minis.com/shop/age-beyond-reason/Bok+1/ (http://www.dixon-minis.com/shop/age-beyond-reason/Bok+1/)
The mounted rider come with a horse but as I wanted a dismounted version for the foot alternate I'm using some plastic horses from Conquest Norman Cavalry, which remind me of the work of 18thC equine artist George Stubbs.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Stubbs (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Stubbs)
The original figures were masked so I've swapped out heads from Crusader SYW infantry, while the second pistol added to the left hand is from a Foundry duellist, and both minis have sword scabbards replaced with curved versions in plastic from a Perry Napoleonic Cavalry sprue.

I have another 10 minis and a donkey cart on the go at the mo, while the Inn and surrounding terrain will come from my GoT project.

Many thanks to Malamute for his good help and advices with the minis :D
-
That's brilliant SI - your skill with the green stuff never fails to astound me!
I have looked for a dual pistol wielding figure for some time, like that, and assume their are no commercial ones out there.
-
Great conversion but I think you're cheating by using the GoT building ;D
cheers
James
-
Great to see this take shape. :)
Excellent conversion work. >:(
I'm surprised no one dies a more comprehensive C18th range beyond the usual farm labourers and civilians.
-
This is very cool! Will follow with interest.
-
Thanks chaps :)
I'm surprised no one dies a more comprehensive C18th range beyond the usual far labourers and civilians.
Yeah I'm surprised too. As you've recommended, Foundry has some good minis but spreads them thinly among too many packs. GRRR! I have my eye on a couple of the Redoubt civilian labourer packs that can be converted to blunderbus etc.
-
And he is off to a great start on another Seriously Insane project.
Wonderful!
:D :D
And take no notice of that mad giant.
Multi-purposing is the new black.
;)
-
Love it :)
-
Thanks :D
I had hoped that he'd be ready in time for the painting club ..... :o
-
He looks great mate! Loving the green stuff work! 8)
-
Great start, looking forward to the rest

Great work SI. Who makes the building?
-
Thanks muchly..... :D
Who makes the building?
I did ;) :D
For completeness, here's the earlier wip and subsequent inside:

It's covered in my lengthy Games of The North thread over in Fantasy but in case of interest and to save any searching there are completed and wip summaries on my project log

Thanks :D

Five more conversions:

Starting from the left:
MAD MINISTER MORDECAI
Prowls Bodmin Moor warning of the evils of drink (not sure what he was, maybe a Foundry or similar Victorian vampire hunter; head has been changed for a Crusader SYW).
RUM-SOAKED ROBERTS
A smuggler who's never sober and aims better for it (Dixon Minis with pistol added to left hand)
PRUSSIAN BILL
Leads a smuggling gang (Foundry; left hand was also holding club but modded to replace with a pistol)
MISTER BATES
The innkeeper (Hasslefree fantasy villager; clothing alterations only)
MISTER ERASMUS FORTITUDE
A gentleman of worth; former soldier and adventurer (Foundry duellist; empty right hand removed and replaced with sword, pistol and left hand both significantly reduced in size; both lower legs reshaped as they were massive)
BTW, the Custom House Riding Officer is HONEST JOHN LOCK, a parsons son.
I also have a couple of Minden SYW Labourers who I've modified the open hands on to become stable boys or kitchen boys (same height but much slimmer so pass as youths), plus a Foundry gentlewoman, a Dixon female (MISSUS BATES), and a Dixon man with woman other shoulder. Once they're all painted up there'll be enough for a quick 2x2 game.

Excellent stuff 8)

Indeed. Jamaica Inn. I loved the movie or TV-series :-/ and she's one of my fave female writers. And yes these conversions are very well done. Looking forward to seeing some more of that. ;-)
-
Thanks. :)
TBH I've never read/watched the Daphne du Maurier story though I usually pass by the Inn at least once a year. The north Cornwall coast is a favourite of mine.
In case anyone is interested, here's some background to smuggling in north Cornwall:
http://www.smuggling.co.uk/gazetteer_sw_13.html (http://www.smuggling.co.uk/gazetteer_sw_13.html)
There's also a pretty handy small book:
The Cornish Smuggling Inn
By Paul White
Published by Tor Mark
I purchased my copy from the smuggling museum at .... Jamaica Inn. :D
-
I do like that Inn. The northern moors board should do decent double duty here.

You should give it a go Steve. It really is a good read, like a lot of Daphne Du Maurier's works (The House on the strand is my personal favourite - medieval time travelling, good stuff).
I actually thought the BBC adaptation of Jamaica Inn (last year? Maybe the year before?) was pretty good too, despite the accusations of mumbling. Well worth a watch.
Nice conversions by the way 8)

Audible have it as an audio book if you fancy listening to it while you're painting:

Thanks chaps.
I guess I'll get the book, though nowadays I tend to find that reading eats into my hobby time. Audible is an interesting suggestion but to be honest I find painting etc to be totally absorbing so I wouldn't even notice it in the background. :D
-
Lovely work on those conversions. Why didn't I think of those? lol

lol. I am grateful, you know!
I'm especially pleased with Mad Minister Mordecai while the changes to the duellist make him a lot more casual.

Yes, I can see why now on closer inspection. ;)

I reckon about 1/2 the views on my threads must be down to me as I go back to review (and review, review, review) what I have done! :o

That's why they are so absorbing Steve, can't wait to see the figures painted up. You probably are aware of the Civilian figures from Black Hussar minatures but I thought I'd make you aware just in case you can use them.

Lovely work on those conversions, very envious of your skills.
As an aside,Trent miniatures Irish revolution range have some musket and blunderbuss armed civilians that may be useful, pack Ir98/02,perhaps you Could save on some conversion time ?
Cheers
Keith
-
Thanks Jeff and Keith. Lots for me to look at in those two ranges, both of which are new to me. Cheers! :)

I'm equally guilty I keep finding mistakes in my painting that I have to go and correct, then a day or two later I spot another error. It's never ending. lol

Lovelly Project and conversions, Steve. :-* :-*
Did you see the FIW civilian pack from Redoubt?
Might be usefull for your Project.

More civilians for you Steve, they look very Perryesque. I think they are Minden miniatures being sold in the UK by Cranntara miniatures :)

Thanks chaps :). All advice and suggestions greatly appreciated. 8)
Nick: yep, I do the same with painting too!!!
Jeff: Cheers! I've had a play with a few of those. Nick passed me some from an Agricultural Labourer pack and I've modded them slightly to be empty handed (and changed one's head); they are beautiful minis but proportion/size/style are very different from the Foundry minis that are the core of the project so I'm using them as youths (comparison photo shows Foundry, Minden, Minden, Dixon).

Rui: Thanks very much! I've got the Civilian pack on my shopping list (plan to swap farm implements for blunderbuss etc) but I completely missed the Extras..... Didn't think to look there. I may well get the 'Drums Along The Mohawk' fleeing group, but will get a couple of cheaper packs first just to satisfy myself on size.
Once again, thanks all for the interest. :D
-
And if you want to split some packs just pm me. :D

I'll bear that in mind Rui ;) :)

I showed Honest John Lock, the Custom House Riding Officer, at the beginning of the thread but while GSing my Second Afghan War cavalry, I realised that I hadn't put stirrups on the loose horse. D'oh!
The conversion with stirrups.....

He is rather splendid. ;D

Dashing :D
-
That's enough about me, both of you! ;) :D
For what it's worth, the minis now have a page on my project website

-
This is a very inspirational thread. And great conversion work and green stuffing!
I wasn't aware of the Bokkenrijders before and they make a great additional for my Outpost Wargames Highwaymen so I immediately placed and order (and included the Dixon bar brawl et al while I was at it).
-
Thanks. It was Malamute who originally pointed them out to me. They're very nice minis. I have the brawl minis as well... They'll make lovely background 'atmosphere'! It'd be great if Dixons extended the line but maybe they're not well known enough to be good sellers.
-
That is quite possible. Sadly the Dixon website isn't helping much in terms of advertising either.
I'm still dreaming of my future project for having tavern brawls in a huge multi-level inn. These models will be great for that.
