Title: Shoot N' Skedaddle, 2nd Edition - Snake Oil Expansion PDF now available.
Post by: Elbows on 09 July 2016, 08:14:18 PM
Hey folks, introducing a new thread for a new edition.

Shoot N' Skedaddle, 2nd Edition is now available!

Having originally started as a simple personal gaming project in 2013, Shoot N' Skedaddle became a retail product in late 2013 with the release of the first edition cards and rules.  With some proper feedback, a couple hundred games played and a wonderful showcase at various conventions through the United States, Shoot N' Skedaddle is entering its 2nd edition.

Why a second edition?

With feedback from owners and players I wanted to develop a more streamlined, polished version of the game.  Increases in my own (somewhat poor!) photoshop skills and a new design direction to make the cards more appealing meant I wanted to do a full re-boot of the game.  The game remains quite interchangeable with the first and there are only minor rules changes.  In fact if you own SNS already you needn't be worried about buying a new copy unless you want a few different weapons/characters.

Here is the change list for 2nd edition.  Some changes I'm quite sure I have failed to list!

- Removed "Coolie" and one "Soldier" character.
- Added Sidekick, Bodyguard as new characters.
- Removed "Disguise" cards from the weapon deck.
- Removed Campaign special cards and replaced with new special cards.
- Heavily revised special decks for both Outlaws and Lawmen
- One of the Cowboy characters now begins the game mounted.
- Revised numerous weapons.
- Added LeMat pistol, 8-Gauge Shotgun, Short Sixgun.
- Removed "Slug" option from Shotgun (not historically accurate)
- Revised special rules for several characters.
- Changed rules for falling and taking damage.
- Removed long range penalty for marksmanship (was seldom used/remembered anyway!)
- Added new campaign system with different tables.
- Added custom character creation rules (actually introduced late in 1st edition)
- Redid the cost methods for characters to ensure they're all in-line with new custom character creation.
- Added optional weather rules.
- Added rules for wild animal encounters.
- Replaced scenarios with new ones.
- Changed rulebook images.
- Redesigned art for all weapon cards.
- Redesigned art for all special cards, both decks.
- Redesigned all art for character cards.
- New dice value page
- Anything else I missed!

New contents!

The new contents are shown below.  As with the last edition, the game cards (necessary for play) will be available in three different ways: boxed cards, unboxed cards, and PDF printable cards (available later).

Players will need the following:
- A 3'x3' or larger playing area.
- Miniatures and terrain as desired (played any scale)
- A CD or DVD to act as a blast template (you can see one I sprayed in the image above - easy!)
- The SNS decks (Characters, Lawmen, Outlaws, Weapons)
- The rulebook (downloadable PDF)
- A tape measure or two
- Some markers for "moving fast", "wounded", etc.
- A handful of each of the following: D6, D8, D12, and D20 dice*.
- Two decks of matching playing cards.

*The rulebook PDF includes a link at the very end to allow players to order colour matched dice directly from Chessex if so desired.

How do I purchase SNS?

Purchase links can be found at the blog: http://shootnskedaddle.blogspot.com/

Printed materials will be available thru Gamecrafter, and the PDF version will be thru Gamecrafter and Wargame Vault.  Links will be available on the blog itself.  The rules are a free downloadable PDF - also available from Wargame Vault or either of the Gamecrafter pages (scroll down to the bottom of the product page and see "Downloads").

Get in touch!

With the relaunch of the game, I've re-done the blog here: http://shootnskedaddle.blogspot.com/

I've also added a TurnStyle Games Facebook page to help people get in touch with me, or communicate with other gamers: https://www.facebook.com/TurnStyleGames/

FAQs and Errata
Here is the FAQ/Errata page if you run into any issues (will be compiling this as a list grows!): http://shootnskedaddle.blogspot.com/2016/08/faqs-and-errata.html

Print to Order

For those unaware, as a single person attempting to design and sell this game I haven't the time/money/facilities to produce a game on a large scale.  As such the printed cards and materials are sold through The Gamecrafter, a site which allows for print-on-demand products.  As such, when customers place an order there will be a delay (about a week normally) before The Gamecrafter will print and mail their order.  Please take this into consideration.  While this diminishes any profit I would make it allows me to sell the game without running a small warehouse here myself!

RAFFLE
The winner of the LAF 2nd Edition raffle is the scholar himself, Mad Lord Snapcase!  He will receive a free copy of the unboxed Shoot N' Skedaddle cards.

Shoot N' Skedaddle: Around the World

Let me know where you're playing Shoot N' Skedaddle and I'll update this world map!

(http://i1149.photobucket.com/albums/o590/turnstylegames/SNSWorld_zpsonf82k9s.png) (http://s1149.photobucket.com/user/turnstylegames/media/SNSWorld_zpsonf82k9s.png.html)

Dec. 12th: Snake Oil Expansion available!

Alright folks, check out the Snake Oil Expansion!  Includes four new special cards for the Outlaws and Lawmen, nine new characters and a new "Snake Oil" deck consisting of ten different tonics and salves, guaranteed* to increase the fighting stamina and prowess of your would-be cattle rustlers!

*Disclaimer: Not intended for use by humans.  May cause diarrhea, constipation, internal bleeding, loss of focus, loss of teeth, frequent bleeding, thinning of the blood, and possible dementia.

Dec. 12th: Alternate special decks available!

These are identical copies to the standard special decks, but feature a different colour on the back, allowing for players to run their own special deck during a game (no need for two Lawmen posses to share a special deck when playing a game, etc.).  These decks are 40 cards each, including the four new special cards from the Snake Oil Expansion.  Note that one or two of these new cards require the Snake Oil Expansion to use.

I'll be updating the rulebook shortly with a few paragraphs to cover the use of the Snake Oil Deck itself.

Thanks.
Title: Re: Shoot N' Skedaddle, 2nd Edition
Post by: Elbows on 11 July 2016, 01:11:42 PM
It will cost a dollar or two more than the previous version simply because Gamecrafter's cost per material has gone up a tiny bit.

Rulebook PDF = Free to download.
Boxed Set of cards = $32
Unboxed Set of cards = $26
And a PDF of the cards = $8  (intended for international orders as it's a lot of printing!)

May change by $0.50 or so, but that's the general price range.  Previously it was $30, $25 and $8.  The cost is higher than some games simply because I'm a one person show so I sell via Gamecrafter, meaning these are print-to-order items.  I simply don't have thousands of copies of these available or I could drop the price by $4-5 a set.

Okay fellas...2nd Edition has just been published.  You can find links at the blog below:

There are links to the boxed and unboxed card sets.  I'll be putting together the drawing here in a minute to see who wins the free decks.  The PDF edition is not yet available (particularly of interest for foreign gamers --- international shipping remains criminally expensive!).

The new updated rulebook has been posted as a free PDF on both of the game purchase pages.  Thanks for looking.  I'll be back in a few with the raffle winner!

Saving up to buy my copy, getting hit with some serious dental bills and other fun stuff of late. Looking forward to the new edition!

Why was the Coolie and Soldier removed?
Title: Re: Shoot N' Skedaddle, 2nd Edition (On sale now!)
Post by: Elbows on 14 August 2016, 03:28:34 PM
The Soldier was a duplicate and I may still take a crack at a Cavalry/Indians supplement in the future so there may be more than enough soldiers to go around.  The Coolie had crap rules and I couldn't think of a good one for him (I did a bit later, so he may return).  I'm always writing notes and may release some character packs in the future etc.  The Bodyguard was an old character I play-tested so he returned and the Sidekick is an interesting new mechanic.  He plays a bit different than other characters.

A handful of characters had some rules changes as well.

Someone was asking me via email if the game was a complete change and I just pointed them to the change log in the new rulebook.  I'd say the 2nd edition is 80-85% the same as the first edition (just prettier/tidier) and 20% or so new content.

I used same fabric to protect floors when I painted once.

I've got several gaming mats.  A few old Hotz mats which are simple felt with some prints (very over-priced) and some lovely new Deep Cut Studios mats which are printed on mousepad material - expensive but supremely nice.  I too have some old distressed leather and some fabric from a variety of shops.  Mainly use the Deep Cut Studios stuff now.  I'm on the lookout for a new Old West town mat with roads ---- preferably in a similar mousepad material.

The Steppe one is nice, has some grass designed into. Also depends on what landscape, technically you can get away with brown, greeen (or mix) as well as snow.

On a side note, ordered my copy on Saturday. Gah! The company says it won't ship until the 30th, sheeshe, I know it is print on demand, but really? That long of a wait?

Styx, if it's any consolation they're normally wrong about their estimation.  It depends on their current batch of orders.  I don't know if they still do it, but they used to show what number your order was when you placed it.  It'd say "Order Queue 811" or something like that.

Argonor, I'd say that solo suitability is high.  Obviously as with most solo gaming you'll lose the secretive schemes/strategies of opposing players, but with randomly generated posses/gangs and equipment - and the poker card activation it's quite fun/easy to play solo.  Simply draw an activation card and do what's in that character's best interest.  Maybe some other folks can chime in as to whether or not they play/enjoy the game solo.

Sounds good. I have started a foray into THW's Dead Moon (which stalled about at Christmas, because I had to stove everything away for the holidays, and then it took me quite some time to get my hobby mojo back - and of course I had spotted some othe shiny stuff in the meantime), and although their games are very well suited for solo games, they are also a little bit cumbersome for a quick game (one needs to configure quite a few things in preparation).

I may give this a try this autumn/winter (if I remember to), just now I have to save money for repairing the family land speeder (has a problem with the transmission), and buying materials for a rather large garden project we have started, but somewhen around halloween I may have some cash to spend, again...  :?

Love the props  :-* Do you play with a group of like minded people who come dressed to play?  :D Also interested in the weaponry are the replicas and or functional? I use toy guns as first player markers also use shell casings and badges. We also have a variety of hats. This encourages a attitude of roll play when we game.  8)

Awesome!  I'll have to dig up a picture, but I purchased a replica Colt Peacemaker (working order, but not original obviously) for my buddy for his wedding.  Being the good friend I decided he shouldn't be allowed to go shooting alone, so I picked up an 1851 Navy Conversion, blued 5.5".  Gorgeous gun, my only "fun" gun (the rest are for business!).

Glad to see you grabbed the Highlander playing cards too, they're awesome!

Mad, I tossed your picture up on an album on the Facebook page.

pops, yes those are the very guns which the 9th Earl of Snapcase brought home from his sojourn in the Wild West! I believe he stopped in Hog Thief Bend on his way to Beau Gus Junction.

Unfortunately I am a solo player presently, I wish I did have some war-gaming friends who would wear the hats and holsters, it would be great!

Those in the photo are replicas, although I do own some real guns but mainly WWI and WWII and a couple of shotguns (not sawn-off I hasten to add) to shoot clays with.

Hats are a vital component in games in my view, I love Pulp games as I can wear my Fez or a Solar Topee.

Got mine today. I will post a review on my blog tomorrow.

Thoughts on it: Overall love the updated artwork and changes.

Wish the character cards were printed on a heavier card.

I splurged for the box, a bit disappointed on that, I was hoping for a cardboard box that would be a nicer storage box to keep stuff in. The box is small and rather thin card.

By no part any of your fault on the card and box materials, that is Game Craft, I feel I could have saved a few bucks on the box now. Plus the box could have gone into a cheaper priority mail box than the one they used and save customers a few bucks. I do plan to send them feedback.

Now on to the meat of  a question; On the Sheriff card it states he can deputize a fellow posse member not a Lawman. I did not see that in the rules and the card does not make it clear is the deputized model:
1) Use the Deputy Profile Now
2) Just Counts as a Lawman now for card effects.
3) +1 guts like the old Sheriff Card

Great game design and love the changes. I know you again could not help Game Crafter on how they do their work.

Got mine as well.  Cards are topnotch, nice artwork.  Packing, storage box though it has great graphics  I agree with you, it is quite thin and wont last long.

Yeah, when the Sheriff deputizes someone they gain +1 Guts and count as a blue Lawmen character (for special card purposes).  I'll add that to the errata.  I was originally planning on adding a small deck of cards to show bounties/deputy badges etc., but it pushed the price too high.  He was worded assuming those cards would be there.  I'll add that to the rulebook shortly for clarification.

Regarding the box (I haven't even opened mine yet!) is it the same thin box with the cardboard/foam storage sleeve inside or have they changed it?  The "medium box" has changed a few times since I started using Gamecrafter.  The cost of the box component itself is why I kept the unboxed option - it's expensive just adding the darn box.

Yes, it is. The box looks like you could open it and reuse it a few times before things go wrong with it. The cardboard/foam insert is the same. I tried it, didn't like it. I will let Gamecrafter know an honest opinion on what they did right and wrong for your product.

Gotcha, so it's the same as the last generation later box (originally it was a slightly different one).  I don't use the box once I get the cards, I just toss them in a crate wrapped in a rubber band (I know, I know!  I'm bad!).  There's a "premium" box available on Gamecrafter but I didn't even look at it because it was several dollars more.  Thanks for the heads up.  Regarding the character cards - yours aren't any thinner than the normal cards are they?  All of the cards I've received from Gamecrafter are consistent with each other so far.

With the box, I was hoping for more of a heavy cardboard box that I could store, cards, dice, markers and templates in. At least that is what I thought I was buying, but Gamecrafter does not give you a great deal of info or a good product detail.

Card wise, the thickness is the same as the other cards, but the longer profile does not work for the thin nature, they seem flimsy and could be damaged easy. The 1st edition seems to be on a better stock for the character cards compared to the regular decks.  Plus I admit, I think I like the left to right format more than the up and down as well.

Again, mind you I am not bitching, just giving honest customer feedback.

Noted.  I'll open up the box I have here and post a picture to the Gamecrafter page of the box's innards so people can see what design it is.  The card stock seems fine on my end, but I haven't compared the thickness of the old and new editions.  Sadly there isn't really a way to address that since Gamecrafter only does the one card stock (I believe they probably punch all of their cards from the same sheets).  Let me know if you do damage character cards and I'll see what I can do about replacing them for you.

Rules updated on all of the Gamecrafter pages.  Mr. Hendry provided me with the PDF files today, so after a test print they'll be up for sale in the next day or two.  Will have a post on that when it happens.  Swing by the Gamecrafter pages and pick up the revised rules - change log is on the Table of Contents or the blog.  Thanks!

Just added in the errata from the blog, some stuff worded more precisely - some typos/duplicate sections removed etc.  If you've read the FAQ/errata on the blog you should be fine.  The scenarios were changed a bit (one re-worded and one re-done).  Being a PDF the rules are a "living" rulebook, but nothing major has changed.

Post by: Elbows on 07 November 2016, 12:29:12 PM
I had been play-testing the idea of a henchmen expansion (cards which represented small groups of disposable baddies etc.).  It didn't work that well and really didn't fit with the rest of the game, so it became a small expansion simply called the "Snake Oil Expansion".  I had been creating a few spare characters and one of them was a Snake Oil Salesman - so what should his rules be?  Well he should have Snake Oil of course!  So I added a Snake Oil deck which is part risk, part reward etc.

As you can see there are two more Lawmen, two more Outlaws and five more Neutral characters.  As with the other characters they all add some unique and interesting game-play opportunities.  I won't spill any of the silliness that the expansion really contains as I think people will enjoy figuring that stuff out on their own.

Mason, you're correct...but then again anyone who's played SnS knows that it's all about carefully controlling/reacting to random madness essentially.  A good example from my last game:

-Lawmen and Outlaws deploy for a simple "shoot em dead" game.
-Outlaws have a Bushwacker and he deploys near the Lawmen area inside a building (using his special rule).
-The Bushwacker is well placed with a rifle and starts really harassing the Lawmen so they surround the building.
-Outlaws draw a bonus town person who the players immediately put in the same building with the Bushwacker...now it's becoming a small fortress.
-Lawmen then draw a card which forces Outlaws out of a single building...so they choose the Bushwacker's hide-out, forcing them into the street.
-Immediately after being evicted the Outlaws draw a card which allows a single Outlaw to take a hostage...so they give the Bushwacker a hostage so the Lawmen are leery to shoot at him.

Add to that the Outlaws stole a Lawmen's loyalty on one flank and the game turned real quickly on the Lawmen (and they never recovered).  :D

I have downloaded the rules from wargamevault, but some bits seem to be missing on the pdf (mostly titles I'd say). This is the table on page 75, is this the way it is supposed to look?

Hmmm...nope, let me take a look and see if it's the same for me.

Janus, it appears that mine looks normal.  I downloaded a copy from WGV and it shows fine on my end (identical to the master file I originally uploaded).  Here is how mine appears:

*Image deleted by Photobucket.

Could you please try downloading it from the following link:
https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/shoot-n-skedaddle

Scroll down on the left-hand side until you see Downloads.  This is free and doesn't not require any payment to Gamecrafter. If that is still showing up wonky it may be your software which is reading the PDF?  I'll put up a post on Facebook and see if anyone else is having similar issues.  Failing everything else I can try to email you a direct copy of the rulebook itself.
