Title: anniversaries...
Post by: Captain Blood on 23 January 2009, 07:19:32 PM
Ooooh. My 1,000th LAF post!

It's taken me rather a long time to get here - but I try to avoid gratuitous posting  :D
(Until now at any rate)

Anyway, it's been jolly nice talking to you all. Here's to the next thousand.

And just so this isn't an entirely wasted post, I've come to the colonial board for this, my millenial contribution, 'cos on the subject of anniversaries, I just realised that yesterday, 22nd January, was the 130th anniversary of the Battle of Isandlwana.
Which must make today the 130th anniversary of Rorke's Drift.

Altogether now:
'Men of Harlech, stand ye steady, never let it e'er be said ye...
For the battle, were not ready... '

And it was the anniversary of the Battle of the Inyezane, which was the first battle of the war (by a couple of hours). Everybody always forgets about poor old Pearson's Column. Even Chelmsford. Poor sods languished in the middle of nowhere surrounded by Zulus for months after the major cock-up with the main column.

Oh, and Rorke's Drift was the same day as Isandlwana and the Inyezane, it's just that they were having so much fun they decided to carry on into the next day.  :)

Congrats, and well done for not posting every single piece of irrelevant nonsense that pops into your head. I wish I could manage that.

Interestingly enough, the 22nd was also the 108th anniversary of Queen Victoria (Gawd Bless 'er)'s death...

Also, congratulations on the 1000th post.
