Sooooo, my local gaming group that was, for about 20 years, fervent Warhammer Fantasy players, with some moonlighting in Warma-Hordes, DBA, LOTR, and the occasional 40K, has moved on. Age of Sigmar left us cold, and the other fantasy options didn't feel right, so in our quest for the next group game, Bolt Action came up, and lit a fire under almost everyone. One lad went into Germany for Fallshirmjaegers, another toe the BEF, and the last US paratroopers. Leaving me.
I am not much of an army painter - if they all have the same uniform, and it will be some drab olive, gray or khaki, I am not overly excited to paint it. I have a Pulp-era German army, mostly figures from Pulp Figures line, but I couldn't get excited to collect any of the existing armies as such. The group has thus far been dealing with me bringing my VSF Norwegian army (using the Norwegian army list) when it hit me the other day - why not play Partisans, and bring a Cult to war?
I am actually considering building it as Romanians instead, just because of the 'traditional' view (to the US mainstream) of Romania being filled with supernatural weirdness (probably due to the placement of Transylvania inside). So, many of these were painted some years ago, and appeared in an LPL, but haven't gotten a thread of their own.
The current Cult leader...

And his various troops...

I am currently going through some of the ones I had painted, and removing pistols or knives to give them rifles and SMGs. I was glad to see a flamethrower in the mix. Love that weapon in Bolt Action. Should name that guy Trogdor. I have left a few of them with their pistols or unarmed - they either were posed in ways that made it difficult to change, or I just didn't feel like damaging the paintjobs. They will crew my various artillery pieces I am scrounging from other sources.
And a couple of 'priests' - not sure what to use them for yet.
And a couple of tanks to use with them. I had these built from years ago in a box, and I am 90% sure they were 1/72nd Tiger 1's. Partisans can use up to medium tanks, and these are about the right size, so I tried to put enough stowage on them as well as paced armor skirting on one to hide their Tigerishness enough to call them Panzer III's or IV's. Y'all can tell me if I got enough on 'em.

And on the days when I want more weird in my war, I have been basing some of the Lovecraftian figures from Monsterpocalypse on bases that take up roughly the same space as a medium tank, and plan on using them as tanks for the sake of game play. I have not yet decided if I want to add a wash to them or not - I really do like the base paint scheme that Privateer gave them, but the is not enough depth. I think a simple thin brown wash would probably take care of that.

That's brilliant! Love it. Keep us posted, I'm looking forward to the battle reports.
(remember Sturmgeshutz and Sorcery?)
-
Oh, jeez, I haven't heard that called out in YEARS...that even predates my entry in roleplaying at age 10.
-
So, I called this a hobby day, and told my wife to leave me be...so we have progress. In fact, I now have just 4 models left until my orders from Murch and Neucraft come in.
The wash definitely pulled some of the detail out to the fore. And I definitely feel comfortable using this in place of a light or medium tank.
And we are moving right along on my infantry.
I *think* this is an old RAFM Dhole, but I am not sure anymore...alongside another newly finished infantry.
And when we go to play Tanks, I will be ready to summon up a few...
And I figure I can add a couple small critters to the infantry.

I am planning on using this 'Spitter' as a light or medium mortar. I may have to try and get a few more.
And then we have the ladies.

That last one is a repaint of a Heroclix that I gave a rifle. I have two of her, and she is going to be my sniper team.
All in all, a good day's work. I feel relaxed, the models look good (not Captain Blood or Agis good, but let's keep things real here...) and I am ready for my shipment of new metal to appear.
-
Really like the theme and army you've got going here, it will be interesting to see them on a table against a standard WWII force.
-
Great stuff!!!
Brian
-
Wow those are a wee bit nice indeed!
-
Thanks! More additions from the weekend. I am awaiting my orders from both Neucraft and from Pulp Figures - until then, I am mainly just trying to find unpainted stuff I have sitting around that fits the theme.
Another leader type...
A couple of Heroclix I repainted - gave the one a rifle.
My Preacher with his book...
A fellow I will be using for my Panzershrek, even though he actually has a bazooka.
And we end with an old broken heavy bolter I originally had added to my VSF Norwegians, but it was dropped and damaged, and so I repurposed it here, with the front end of one of the above tanks' guns, as I cut one off to keep it less Tigerlike, and more Panzer 3 like. I can call it a medium gun of some sort.
Photos may look odd for a few weeks as I try to find the best settings on a new camera. The old setting washed out the colors.
-
It'll be a sight to see when they're all lined up for a game. :-*
-
They are taking the table today, actually, though about half my infantry are just base-coated, as my order from Mr. Murch came in Friday.
Earlier this week, however, my order from Neucraft Models came in. A beautiful set of kits - the Renault had some breakage in spite of the packaging (honestly, I have no idea how it broke considering how well it was packaged). I picked up a Renault and two anti-tank guns from him to use for my Cult.
I have been experimenting with painting camo - I think I got it okay on here. I am not overfond of the green, but this appeared to be relatively accurate to the colors they used, unless the photo I had was totally wrong.
I also repainted a tank I had originally put in my VSF Prussian army, but I never felt it fit, so with a little work, I changed it from this:
To this:
The guns were changed up so that it would at least look like it was armed like a Panzer 38 would be, with the coaxial MG as well as the hull mounted. The model came from Black Army Productions, but I can't remember what it was called. It was a Spanish Civil War vehicle if I remember correctly.
Next up are a pair of anti-tank guns - an SA mle 1934 25mm Anti-tank Gun, and an SA mle 1937 47mm anti-tank gun. These are really pretty little kits. A touch fiddly, and I have some worries about durability with the resin, but so well made.
Also, there is a story here. I posted on the WW2 forum looking for artillery without crew, so that I could use my cultists instead, and someone pointed at these two guns. I had *just* ordered the Renault the day before, without realizing that there were guns in the store, and stated on the thread that I wished I had known before I placed the order.
Kevin at Neucraft emailed me, having seen the thread, and asked me if I wanted to add the guns, as he had not shipped yet, and when I had questions, was VERY communicative. Excellent service, a great product, go buy his stuff, people!
-
Fantastic stuff once again, colour me jealous (Or yellow!!)
-
They suck, due to my phone taking poopy pictures, but here are today's first turn photos. Then I started playing, and forgot to take any more. Bolt Action is new to my group, so I am facing an entirely black undercoat British Paratrooper force...

Are you going to try this force out for Konflikt 47?
-
Maybe. I am waiting with bated breath for that...
-
Wooo! Update!
A silly thing that is from Warmachine - can't remember what it is called, but I certainly thought it looked Lovecraftian enough.
And a couple of MMGs to use in my Bolt Action force - they must be rattling as they fire because I could not get a single in focus photo of these two.
And no small number of cultists. I converted a few to have more rifles, a couple of panzerfausts... I need to get a good group shot going this weekend.

continually impressed by this stuff.....its awesome and would make such an eye catching and fun army to play against with any ww2 or www2 stuff....i just love the attention to detial and the wild ride through so many different collections, companies and styles...its brilliant, thanks for sharing and inspiring :)
-
Thanks! This is the first 'army' I have really been able to focus on in about a year - I need to get back to my Grymn and finish them up - but the idea of painting a whole lot of green or brown just makes my skin crawl.
Group photo! I have a few oddball figures still left to paint and add in, but this is everything I need for now.
Added a few more grunts from the Monsterpocalypse range. I figure I can call them SMG wielding Veterans or Guerrilla fighters (depending on if I use the partisan or the Romanian list) to show their tough Otherworldly badness.
And this guy is going to be one of my Spotters.
I still want to pick up a few other things to add in - some Romanian tanks like the TACAM R-2, and a few artillery pieces rather than just anti-tank guns. Maybe an L6/40 for when I use them as Partisans - Recce vehicles are pretty handy. Also, I am looking for any excuse to throw money to smaller companies like Mad Bob and Company B, who do those less well-known vehicles.
-
Bah, why buy artillery pieces and recce vehicles when you could have spitting and giant dog like creatures?
...Um, though after a point you'd wind up with just a 40K Tyranids army. :)
That's a lot of work which's gone into all of that. How many points are you sitting at now?
-
I can drop 1k easily in the standard Reinforced Platoon selector, and 2k if we go balls out for the Tank War Armoured Platoon selector. The main reason I am looking at the artillery and recce vehicles is to keep it from making one of my cohorts go bonkers. He would really rather keep our Bolt Action battles historically accurate, and this army is hard enough for him to swallow without having too many monsters walking about as tanks and such.
-
And so, I made some bocage. About 30' or so.

Mostly 6" and 3" sections, with the occasional 9" and 12" piece. Still need to build a few gates.

Loved it! :-*
As traditional Hast** servants, Byakhee are great as air support! ;)

:o this stuff looks fabulous :o...i tried to find some of the monsterpocalypse figs for the same kind of use but everyone wanted too much
-
Damn, Sinew ol' bean, do I have to start stalking your 'history' to see how far your awesome talent is spread?
Impressive all, mind you, but the one that most probably don't care is how much I like the Mysterio conversion. I'm sure it seemed obvious, but the white, swirling smoke turned to seaping other world horror... *woof*
I've old Clix at hand oh plenty if silly enough attempt to follow, but I really hadn't thought of Monsterpocalypse in just this fashion.

I found a few good spots that were pretty darn cheap - and I also bought out my FLGS when they decided to put the boxes out at 75% off.

I first started using Monsterpoc stuff for Geckos in Fallout - and you can find me in all kinds of places. Pikes and Flouncy Shirts, Post-Apoc, Future Wars, Weird Wars, Medieval, Fantasy, VSF, Pulp, Colonial, Cthulhu, Superhero...
Loved it! :-*

I have yet to find a Byakhee model I like. More likely to go Mi-Go.

Huh. Maybe if I can get a better look at one of those - photos seem to be scarce.
In the meantime, enjoy some photos of the tables I have been putting together for our weekly Bolt Action games - please forgive my gaming group for their unpainted/primed stuff. I am the most militant painter - the others have a bit of that Warhammer40k attitude of built is good enough combined with children and stressful jobs.
I don't have children, just a wife and two cats, so my time is more flexible.

Great table! :-*
-
Thanks. I either own or have painted everything on either of those setups. Both of the gentlemen playing in these photos have had me paint their terrain over the years, such that they had to start marking their pieces on the bottom, or I accidentally take it home. My style is fairly distinct...
-
What about converting that "yellow tank" of yours into something more... Mythos-like?
;)
-
Very nurgley. My favorite!
-
Naah, I used to have a Nurgle Army - I am much more prone to Slaanesh in these days. All about the tentacles.
Besides, that yellow tank is my Panzer IV Auf A stand-in. It was a 1/72 tiger at one time...but it gets double duty as I have a German army I use that is all Bob Murch's Pulp Germans - mostly Zeppelin Troopers I buy as Fallshirmjaegers or Engineers.
-
And, if you look close, you can see I made some haystacks.
When I get the materials, I am certainly making more.
And the last additions to my Cult (until I get my Italian tank destroyers)
Some Sorceresses - they are some Warmachine models, but damned if I remember what. I may go find the other bad guy girls I had (Satyxes?) and paint them in yellow and gold too, just for crazies sake.
And my Blessed - those who lead our Cult due to their being touched of the Gods. Formerly known as Mind Flayers.
And my command tank - an L6/40. I threw a Cultist reading from the King in Yellow up top.

I apologize for the photo quality - my other camera gave up the ghost, and now I am trying to learn how to use my phone's camera. It takes good quality photos, but it reacts differently to light than the old camera did.
-
So, I usually use a Partisan list when I build this army - and they get bombs. Warlord suggest using a 20mm token for them. Well, pshaw to that!
I may have a 20mm base under them, but we made some bombs! I figured that ww2 scratchbuilt bombs may very well be a collection of explosives stacked together in some non-descript display...with a radio antenna to make it go boom! I added a dab of yellow to all of them just so I could find the damned things on the playing field.

And some houses I painted for our Normandy and Market Garden Campaigns. I like the Sarissa houses, but I had to change how I approach building painting due to the detail not being as deep. These are not the best pieces, but I think they will do. They actually belong to a friend, and were painted on commission.

Sinewgrab, you display a disturbingly insane level of creativity. It would have never occurred to me to use Pulp cultists as a sort of partizan army for wierd WW2. Truly amazing, fantastic, and drool worthy work you have done.
-
Very good. I wish I had seen this thread earlier.
I bet your opponent is surprised when the L6/40 is revealed to have magical Super Heavy armour?
Nice tokens, you could also go all mystical symbol (media subject to your own imagination) for that "Have you seen the yellow sign" experience.
-
Warren - thanks! It was an inspired moment, I think.
UVS - Actually, I did a game recently where my opponent and I each could "proxy" a model we use regularly as one that was not like the model shown, except that it had to be vaguely the same class (no GI as Sherman for example) and we didn't have to reveal it until it was interacted with. Since the L6-40 is a Recce vehicle in BA, it tends to be out front getting shot at, screaming backwards out of the fight, etc - well, I took it as a Tiger II, whereas my opponent took a Tetrarch as a Cromwell. That was hilarious, especially explaining it to people who happened by. The first time we fired at each other, and then realized what was going to likely happen...
And I had the audacity to ask if I could still recce...
-
And hey, why not show off my new tank destroyer!
I am very pleased with how the camo came out...

What a fun and innovative army you have built. I am not familiar with bolt action but I think that it looks like great fun.
I recall a guy in my group many years ago that asked everybody to help him paint his orks. The way it worked was that everybody joined him on the Sunday at the club and then he ordered pizza for anyone painting 5 orks or something. It worked like a charm. And while it probably wouldn't work with pizza for grown men I think the idea of helping the slow painters in a social thing is cool. :D

What a nice idea, the only problem is I would starve, I do not think after thirty years I have five painted Orks ^___^.
