A few years a go I had the start of a very nice Samurai collection, which I have sadly sold on. Whilst I was on holiday last week I took with me a few Ospreys, which are nice light reading for the beach. The book that got the creative juices flowing the most was 'Hatamoto' by Stephen Turnbull.
So to cut a long story short I have ordered a few Samurai in a bid to eventually have enough painted to get some gaming in!
Here is Samurai number 1
A retainer of Takeda Nobukado

I will try and update this thread as regularly as possible as i just need to base the next one, that should be tomorrow. But then its back to work!

Another one of Takedas Samurai finished. I wanted to use colours i don't get a chance to use. So this chap is painted in teal and turquoise. Photoshop has kind of killed the turquise.

Great looking minis. What rules are you going to use once you get to playing?

thanks for your comment. I'm going to be using the Lord of the rings skirmish rules from GW, unless anybody has any better ideas??

Well, the most recently is Ronin from Osprey as well.
There a lot of threads already, with various topics about rules and minis.
There is also a Zen-version of SAGA, made for Samurai. There are other rule-sets, but they are a) with magic and b) for (much) more minis, like ie Kensei or Bushido, me thinks. There is also Daisho (not sure if this isfrom Osprey as well, sorry, but some will throw in that info, I am sure), but with magic as well.
With Ronin You need from 5 (bad ass Samurai faction) to roughly 20 minis. But 20 is rare, while plaing the usual point-size.
Not much surprisingly, You might crack bigger numbers with the peasant faction. ;)
Ronin is definetly worth a go!

great painting, couple lads and myself are also using the LOTR rules for this
-
If your Samurai era is 17th-19th century, then might I recommend Donnybrook. While not intended for Samurai, my gaming group have found the rules work really well. They are less rules intensive than Ronin, but more flavoursome than LOTR.
-
Thanks for the info on rules sets, i have just grabbed the Ronin book off amazon for less than a fiver and will give it a good read through.
How many figures is Donnybrook designed for?
well here's another one, the collection is slowly growing. If Ronin looks good I may just do a few more Takeda then switch to another clan.

Excellent choice sir. The LoTR rules are the best of GW's Big Three, IMO. I also have Ronin; I have a Ming warband painted for it but have never played :'(. They are cheap and look fun.

A couple more and a group shot of what i have painted so far.

now all I need is a few dozen more and some nice Japanese buildings!

Donnybrook force size is the same as SAGA. Unit size depends on game value, so for example 4 samurai, 8 Ashigaru or 12 Peasant militia. Usually about 4 units, + a character model for each of those units.
So from 20-50 figures.

Well done!

Lovely work :)

I've finally finished another Samurai, this dashing chap represents a tsukai-ban (courier guard) of the Takeda clan. They wore a sashimono which pictured a centipede. From what I could find in my research this could be in various colours, on different coloured sashimono dependent on the general.
A command from a tsukai-ban was supposed to have the same weight as if it had been personally given by the Daimyo himself. So I thought he would make a good leader to my slowly growing force.
