I have been hankering after a Republican Roman army for about 5 years now, ever since my wargaming buddy suggested a Punic War campaign. However as with a lot of good ideas it was shelved for other more important projects. Then a couple of years ago Victrix brought out a couple of sets of wonderful figures that have grown into an almost complete set of Punic wars figures.
So with a large Christmas present followed by a couple of small birthday presents, I had enough figures to complete a couple of Legions. At the same time we completed our set of campaign rules and I no longer had an excuse to put off painting the figure but it was quite a daunting number (over 60 figures in each Legion). Then as luck would have it the Army Painter challenge came along and I decided to throw myself into it.
I made up a few figures to see how the legion would look on the table with 16 figure units and although it was ok, it lacked a little mass, so I decide to up the numbers of figures to 12 Triarii, 24 Princepes, 24 Hastati and 16 Velite with 3 command figures.
Here is a picture of the initial figures.

Happy with the numbers I sat down to paint them. Normally I use a three layer colour system but each unit would have taken forever so I modified it with a base colour, a number of washes and a single highlight, after all I was painting en masse and not for a skirmish game. With a little trial and error, I found a style and standard that I liked and here it is.
First up are some Velite.

Next are the Hastati.

Then some Princepes.

The Command and the Cavalry which need to have their shields (and a spear or two unbent).

And finally the whole legion together.

I have already started on Legion 2 which will have white tunics and red shields as a contrast. After that that will come some Italian Allied Legions and then some Spanish.

Very well done. Looking forward to seeing more of your work. WhT rules will you and your friend be useing?

Thanks. We are using Hail Caser for the tabletop games and our own campaign rules called “Elephantis ad Romanos” (With Elephants to Rome).

Brilliant show - well done! 8) 8) 8)

Very nice indeed, who needs three layers eh? You have set yourself a high standard to maintain with another five or six months to go!
-
Bloody hell, mate, that is some output.
And very nice they look too.
:-* :-*
Although they already look great at this point, they are going to be one seriously impressive force when you have gotten them all coloured in!

Looking great, I agree with your choices on unit size.

Excellent painting Gary. 8)
They put my first unit of just 13 miniatures to shame.... :'(
-
Good grief! You have been busy o_o :-*
They look the business Gary. Well done.
-
WOW...
Those are more than i have to paint for my celtiberians. o_o
Very well done Gary. :-* :-*

How many?
-
A legion a month will definitely keep you out of trouble! It will be a great looking force on the table.
-
Excellent work!
-
Thanks for all the encouragement. I will be putting up some work in progress shots of this next batch in a day or two after which I might be tempted to take a break from painting legionaires and do some Spanish troops as my next campaign moves will almost certainly taking me into the Iberian Peninsula and I hope my Consul will be able to 'persuade' some Spanish allies to join the Roman cause. If not they will be useful enemies for my opponent.

Brilliant. I find that what demotivates me most about painting hordes of plastic figures is the mending and gluing part... I really can't be bothered!
I was somebody would offer a "plastic set building service": lol

This month has been a bit of a struggle to keep up the work rate that I had set myself, given that the summer holidays ate into my painting time. However I have had reasonable success with Legio 2. This time they have white tunics and red shields to contrast with Legio 1.
First up is the Command group.

The Velite showing half in close order and half in skirmish order.

The Hastati in a Close Order block.

Likewise the Princepes.

The Triarii are only half completed with the remaining 6 figures part painted.

The unpainted set. Hopefully I will get these finished this week.

I still have the cavalry to paint but at least they are primed. Maybe next weekend?
Then I am on to the Spanish allies.

Looking good
