Hey guys, a friend and I are working on getting his old Dalek Necron proxy army redone for Firefight. Both of us are big Classic Who fans, but are just getting started with the novels, audios and comics. Ideally, the army would have enough variation to be interesting on the table-top, rather than just being a mob of Daleks. To that end, I'm looking to the LAF brains trust to dredge up enough expanded canon to fill out the army nicely.
Just to be clear, Classic Who and expanded universe only! None of that "New Who" crap. :-[
So far, the obvious ones are:
Dalek
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/11/Remembrance_of_the_Daleks.jpg)
The classic killing machine, these form the bulk of the army, each one basically a miniature tank.
Dalek Mutants
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e6/Dalek_attack.jpg)
Not built for combat, but these horrible blobs have been known to cause trouble for unsuspecting enemies.
Special Weapons Dalek
(http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/d874b6f5e5d3610a3e5bcd9b8707948c.jpg)
Who doesn't love these? Made insane by radiation, these Daleks are wheeled into battle by their comrades to bring their devastating weapons to bear.
Flying Platforms
(http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/tardis/images/d/da/DalekTranssolarDisk.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20081027065018)
Used for scouting and negotiating difficult terrain, these platforms make any Dalek highly mobile.
Ogrons
(http://www.thiel-a-vision.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/whomonster21.jpg)
Hired muscle for the Daleks, Ogrons are tough warriors with a penchant for sadism and violence.
Spaceships
(http://www.thedoctorwhosite.co.uk/wp-images/daleks/dalek-spaceships-1-b.jpg)
Daleks have used a variety of spaceships over the years, both for transport and direct warfare.
Emperor Dalek
(https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/976x549_b/p00y09r8.jpg)
Rarely mobile, the Emperor Dalek leads one of the Dalek factions and likes shouting at subordinates.
Dalek Commanders
(http://www.thedoctorwhosite.co.uk/wp-images/daleks/profiles/14-dalek-side.jpg)
Sometimes black, sometimes red, Dalek commanders can often be identified by different colouring. These Daleks tend to have small leadership roles on the battlefield.
Davros
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/02/Davros_Wisher.png)
Creator of the Daleks and leader of the renegade faction, Davros is a mastermind of genetic engineering and a madman.
Will post pictures as the project progresses, thanks in advance for the help. 8)

None of that "New Who" crap. :-[
Deary me. Nose, spite & face springs to mind.
-
Wasn't Davros the leader of the Imperial faction in Remembrance Of The Daleks? IIRC, didn't they fight the Renegade faction of Grey Daleks?
Have you considered having Engineer Daleks? Citadel had them as the ones with pincers rather than plungers, in their Daleks v Cyberman plastics in the late 80s. What about the Supreme Dalek? Which I think was black and gold?
Oh yeah and don't forget the 'Robomen' dalek soldiers as seen in the Dalek movie from the 60s...
-
Always loved the Ogrons. Hope Warlord do a load in plastic soon.
What have you got so far? Any current pics?
-
Don't forget the Dalek troopers - either branwashed/essentially robomen, or as possibly as mercenary allies (the guys pictured here was a merc). They come from one of the Peter Davidson ones:

And the Slyther

-
There was a Dalek Annual back in (1965 or 1966?) had all sorts of other designs in it.
Including one on stilts? for mangrove swamps.
The lead Dalek in that was more like a normal base with a "ball" top half, and gold coloured.
They featured in a comic called TV21. You might find some illustrations on google if you look for Dalek TV21
There's a modernised version here: http://alteredvistas.co.uk/html/dalek_chronicles.html
-
How could I forget the Robomen? I love those cheesy movies! lol
Thanks for the TV21 heads-up fastolfrus, plenty of inspiration there!
-
Sorry for double-post, but found the mangrove Dalek:

Love it!
-
If you google "Dalek colour schemes" you will get plenty of guides both as to basic Daleks and special leaders, by way of variety.
Daleks like to use auxiliaries/slaves as cannon fodder or for heavy lifting. The obvious ones are Robomen in "The Dalek Invasion of Earth" [1st Doctor] Ogrons [3rd Doctor] and Dalek Troopers[ mercenaries/clones, 5th Doctor].
As Daleks can be encountered throughout space and time, the possibilities for similar auxiliaries are endless.
Daleks do not acknowledge "equals" but that hasn't stopped not a few individuals deluding themselves that they are valuable allies. That usually ends in tears.

That was the one.
I think it was in the "Dalek World" (1966).
I found an Amazon page that has a couple of illustrations that you might find useful:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/DALEK-world-annual-1966/dp/B003WQVGMA
The two twin-page spreads are handy, the "Dalek task force" has a variety of specialist vehicles/machines, and the "inside a Skaro saucer" has the gold coloured leader illustrated at number 18.

Go look at Second Empire for all the inspiration you'll ever need.

Thanks for the help, LAF provides, as always. :D
As the army comes back together, I'll make sure to get some pictures. The last time it saw daylight, digital cameras were still pretty new-fangled, so I'm not finding any existing pictures.

I borrowed from 2nd empire a lot to spice up my dalek army.

now, I would in no way recommend the novel War of the Daleks as it rewrites loads of Who lore with a very clumsy plot, but does include Strider Daleks - essentially the bastard love child of a Spider Dalek and an AT-AT. And the novel also introduced the fan based Spider Dalek into 'canon'
Destiny of the Daleks introduced Suicide Daleks, Daleks Masterplan had flamethrower units, and although strictly not canon, you don't want to forget the Engineer Dalek.

The Doctor was also able to identify Scout Daleks from normal Daleks in Remembrance of the Daleks, based on the skirt if memory serves, but a basic Dalek prop was used. Remembrance also had the Imperial Shuttle. Can't lay my hands on pics of the one I made. I did do a saucer though.

The Chase gave the Daleks DARDIS's if you want a smaller ship on the tabletop for them.
-
oh, and Dalek Mutants would not be unit on their own... they are a product of a destroyed Dalek casing.
also, no Dalek in the classic series was red, command Daleks were black or gold. Saucer commanders had alternating coloured panels on the skirt and Emperor's guard had black domes.
-
Don't forget 'invisible Daleks' from their military experiments on Spiridon in "Planet of the Daleks". Good news is everyone can add these to their table-top army for no extra cost :) Damn, where did I put mine again?
-
Hadn't seen the Second Empire before.
Some useful looking illustrations, but the humour is a bit ham-fisted for my taste.

Agreed. Followed it for the pretty renders of Dalek tech, not for the writing.

Got a few snaps of Benny's existing Daleks on Saturday:

I'm told more campy SF nonsense is on its way soon! lol

The art is great though some of the Dalek colour schemes are 'interesting'. The ideas are actually pretty good in the main though the humour and dialogue can grate. I'm about three or four books in (lost count) and it's a bit like what the Daleks would have been if they'd retained their emotions, which I guess is the concept behind it. It's surprisingly fun despite the regular pop culture references that aren't so much shoehorned in as smashed in with a sledgehammer. I like the fact that it has given me favourite Dalek characters lol

Hello all, its my Dalek army that's being rebuilt. Thanks Hat Guy for starting this (I don't get on the net all that often).
After a little bit of a clean up and reorganising I have 3 squads of 10 Daleks. Grey with black bumps, grey with blue bumps and Black with silver. I'm thinking of using the black ones as an elite unit or with the spare I have as unit leaders for the other squads.
I have converted 8 into heavy weapon Daleks, 4 classic energy weapon ones and to spice it up a little 4 with some sort of Gatling cannon, I know its not cannon but I just saw Death to the Daleks and they had machine guns ;)
I also have 6 of te new I daleks, while I never liked the new show or the new look they are forming the basis for some heavy armoured Daleks, maybe they operate in 0 atmosphere or something??
Ogryns are coming soon too, but at the moments, working on a floating troop carrier. Kinda like the one man discs but enough to transport many Daleks or some supplies.
I know not all this is cannon, but I'm trying to make the army into something useable as a regular army. So while some of the stuff isn't strictly "Dalek as seen on TV" I'm trying to keep the feel of the classic stuff.
-
Hey folks, Benny's put the Daleks aside for the moment, but we'll see the finished horde before too far into the new year. As some may have noticed, I've kind of backed off on my Saurians as well, as the final version of Firefight is due shortly and I'm not keen to rebuild half the army to match new lists.
So what's going on? Well, I had an idea related to the Dalek army and wanted to get it all down and get some feedback from you fine folks. Someone on this board (I forget who sorry) mentioned that GW Tyranid Spore mines would make good Rutans and I was thinking that the Asterian list from Warpath (essentially a combination of infantry robots and drones) would be something I could have a bit of fun with, modeling-wise. So why not investigate the idea of doing a Rutan army using the Asterian list?
Right, so what I need for the Asterians are a variety of visibly different spore-mine like creatures to fill the roles of drones, infantry, elite infantry and small vehicles, maybe one or two "big" vehicles. A quick look on Google gave me these GW and FW examples:

There's this from Antimatter:

Any other ideas?

There was a red Dalek in the Dr Who movies with Peter Cushing.

There were, but the AARU productions aren't in the TV Who universe, if that's what Hat Guy wants to work with.

Well the movie Daleks did appear in a couple of New episodes - but I'm aware that Hat Guy is not counting anything 'New Who'.
Depending on whether you include Paul Mcgann as old Who or not, would this count as 'Expanded Universe'? From the 'Children of the Revolution' comic strip.
