If you could only have one artillery crewman what type would you choose, I am looking at period 1830-1865....
I am interested in pose not the actual army
-
The crewman with the sponge/swab. That states artilleryman like nothing else.
-
Standing with 2 open hands, one straight down and one lifted a bit higher. As there are lots of separate artillery tools available it should then be possible to equip them properly

Absolutely this. Can be converted to hold pretty much any of the required tools and not look out of place alongside a pile of shot or a bucket on the ground.
-
Kneeling, one knee on the ground the other bent possibly with hands neatly folded on the knee.
Then you can put the artillery tools, ammo, bucket, etc, next to the figure on a base.
-
Standing to attention, awaiting orders. A proper toy soldier pose :)
-
Breeches around ankles, mooning the enemy.

What he said. Could also be a pioneer with a shovel
