Title: Danish Congo
Post by: Jonas on 12 August 2016, 01:56:22 PM
After seing the release of Congo I decided to get a copy. At first I wished for a copy for my birthday, but as my wife revealed she had not bought the Congo book I ordered a copy myself. It is still on the way in the mail, but I decided to gather what miniatures i had, which could be included in the setting.

I really think this is what I have been looking for in Colonial Gaming. A skirmish game with 30-40 miniatures pr side, adventure, wild life and such.

Mostly finished minitures for White Mans Expedition.
A few VSF miniatures snuck into the image too...

Gorillas and White Mans Expedition.

Cattle.

Jungle Tribe.

I plan to look through the rules before I go out and buy more miniatures. Hopefully I can get pretty far with the collection I already have.

I think you'll be fine for forces with what you have there. If anything you'll probably be able to sort out two forces for the white men from that lot!  ;)

Are some of those Gorillas the Obelisk ones?

As I'm in the same position at the moment I'll be following this with interest.  :D

Yeah, I have plenty of White Men, but will probably need some not so trained Askari and such.

4 of the Gorillas are from Obelisk, the 5th is from Reaper.

Look like you have a good number of figures to get started.
Still thinking about the rules.
Will wait to see some battle reports,
before I decide.

I wondered who had them all. Regretted never picking any of Jo's African animals up when I had the chance..  :'(

Yes, some standard Askari, a sprinkling of Ruga Ruga and some young warriors would do it. My own white mans column only comes to 23 figures at the 70pt mark.

Brilliant! I have plenty of Zanzibarians and Azande. Maybe this could be a thing in the coming winter.

Looks like a great start. It was a great excuse for me to pick up a few units I didn't have in the Foundry DA range.  Congo will be my fall/winter project as I have a lot of painting to do.

Today I had a painting session with Dr. The Viking and since he is also very interested in trying out Congo and already have a lot of Darkest Africa figures we decided to have him join in the fun and rename the thread to Danish Congo.

Here is what I finished today:

Posing in front of a trading station.

The Explorers.

Askari Characters.
(I could see the woman needed a final coat of highlights, it was added after the picture was taken)

British Trained Askari.

Sorry about the blurry pictures, but I haven't quite figured out my "new" camera yet...

OK, that didn't go very well, the pictures are terrible, but the minis are painted.

Obelisk Gorillas.

I managed to paint the first 6 of my Zanzibari slavers.

Here's a picture:

Not much to say about the painting. Tried to make it fast and efficient.

Your slavers are great  :-* It is interesting to see different undertones in the whites. Somehow they all work. The green hat is especially nice.

OK, so I got the book today and I made a quick read through and so far I am delighted with this. It really seems easy, fun and fast to learn and play.

I have been toying around with my minis and the army lists and I am happy to see that my collection goes a long way already.

For the Forest Tribe  list my Jungle cannibals could just barely muster the 70 points, but I did it.

1 Chieftain - Free
1 Champion - Free
1 Sacred warrior - 2pts
2 Warrior Units - 34 pts
2 Young Warrior Units - 24 pts
1 Archer Unit - 10 pts

Total: 70 pts

This doesn't give much diversity right now, but it is a playable faction. What I would like to add next was some Pygmies, Cannibals and more Characters.

For the White Man Expedition there would enough for a playable list, but again, not much diversity.

I have all characters except the flag bearer.
4 Bearers - 8 pts
1 Unit of Soldiers - 21 pts
5 Units of Trained Askari - 64 pts
1 Unit of Adventurers - 11 pts

Total: 104 pts

What I would like to add next are Normal Askaris, Young warriors and Archers.

Of course, when playing Dr. The Viking I will be able to mix these two lists and use Forest Tribe minis as Young Warriors and Archers in the White Man Expedition list.

Next I will also have to have a look at what Dr. The Viking will be bringing to the table, so we can list up his minis.

Next steps:

Stones base painted and sand added.

Sand base painted.

Next I will drybrush the sand, paint the stones, add grass and jungle bushes.

More advances in the Terrain Department.

Bases finished.

First batch of plants added.

Detail from the carved monkey mountain.

Detail from a holy rock.

The holy rock.

It is on purpose that I have only put few plants on, to start with. I have a second order of plants coming in, to mix in with these for change of look and colours. Also each base needs to be able to fit a unit within the jungle and the terrain bases are a bit on the small side, but I will try and make sure a unit of 5-7 men can fit in each terrain.

Tomorrow we will have a test game and I can see what works best for terrain and make more and finish these.

We had out first go at Congo today and it went very well. No photos of the game itself, since it involved some unpainted minis, but after the game I decided to play around with the camera and see if I could snap a few photos of my column.
