Title: Interested in playtesting some scenarios for Song of Drums and Tomahawks?
Post by: mikedemana on 18 August 2016, 04:22:29 AM
Hi everyone,

A forum member's request for scenario ideas gave me an inspiration. We are currently wrapping up playtesting of the Beaver Wars in Ohio Campaign and Scenario Book. The rules will contain 18 scenarios, which we have been playtesting. However, more eyes and viewpoints can be helpful. So, why not enlist the help of interested LAF members? :D

The scenarios themselves are meant to reflect the style of warfare between native American tribes common to this time period. They do not necessarily represent a specific historical incident. They are used to play out the raids and other attacks generated through the Beaver Wars campaign. However, I think they will also be a great source for gamers interested just the scenarios themselves.

Long-winded intro aside, who would be interested in receiving scenarios by email to playtest and then report back to me? I can send you 1-3, but even if you get a chance to playtest only one, that will be helpful! I will list all playtesters in the credits of the book, of course.  lol

If you're interested, PM me your email address. The scenarios will contain a map, situation background, board description, special rules, deployment rules, and victory points.

Thanks in advance for your help!

No hurry...my best guess is finishing up our campaign playtest in October. So, you'd have till November or so. Let me know if you're interested...

hey Mike,
i could be interested but i would like to know if you want we play the game as per the rules or with home rules adaptation.
When, i mean rules little change, as at our club we play it with "non consecutive" reload action (in the same turn) for musket.
we use smoke marker for tracking reloading actions :
*  One black (gun is fired and need to be reload by 2 actions)
and then
* One white (1 action spent  and gun nearly reloaded- waiting the next action).
* The white marker is remove when the 2nd action is spent for.

Anyway, just drop me the way you want we play it   ;)
i'll be very happy to help you

Cheers
Eric

Some technical questions about the 3 scenarios you have sent to me :

* All the tables are "Broken ground". Ok, but what's is the interested to get a path in the woods if all the indians have "Woodmen" trait, which give them not mvt penalty into ?

* Objectives :
They aren't definite in the text, only in the narrative there is an idea about the situation.
Attackers and Defenders have no clear written objectives (Victory Pts underline them but...) and we don't know what we have to do except in destroying the other warparty. Or try to do it  :D

Cheers
Eric

Hi Eric,

Objectives are defined by the Scenario Victory Points. However, the ultimate goal is to present an interesting tactical challenge that results in a fun game. I wanted to avoid games where one side or the other has a compelling reason NOT to fight. People sit down to wargame, throw some dice, and kill some little lead men.

Good point on the paths, but bearing in mind that pack animals, lesser skilled tribesmen, women, etc., would need and use the path. When the battle opens the warriors will definitely abandon the path and take to the woods.

I hope that helps, Eric! Sorry to take forever to respond. Busy school year, of course!

My students are much younger -- I teach what we call "middle school." My students are normally 12-13 years old. It is a fun age.

Thanks again for the playtesting reports, mon ami!

Hey Mike, a friend and I had our first game of this in ages, and we were saying we'd love some more scenarios. We ended up using a Song of Blades and Heroes scenario, and it worked much better than just trying to kill each other!

Did anything come of the ones you playtested?

Soon to be published, actually! My campaign/scenario book, The Beaver Wars in Ohio (working title), is very close to be completed. I decided to add in a fourth campaign scenario and am writing that up. It will include 4 phases of the Beaver Wars to game as campaigns. In addition (and probably what you're looking for), it will include 18 game scenarios. These are meant to be relatively generic and usable just about any time frame from 1600s to early 1800s.

I will definitely be announcing on the forum when they go to print and are available. Thanks for your interest!
