Hey everyone,
its been pretty quiet on my painting bench for a long time but this is about to change now. After Studio Tomahawks "Congo" publishing I'm totally drawn to start a few war bands for my own. Some european explorers, african tribesmen and masai are planned.
I will use this thread as a little diary with WIPs of the process, some background infos and at the end (of course) my cinematic photographs :)
Foundrys african princess makes the start.
Cheers,
Daniel

Lovely work and I can't wait to follow this!

Splendid.... :o

Lovely work Daniel. As I'm in a similar position to you with Congo I'm very much looking forward to following your progress. :)
-
Lovely painting :-*
-
Thank you so much!
I can't wait to see more and more Congo projects here! ;D
On to the next one: Tribal Chieftain.
Cheers,
Daniel

Brilliant. I'm looking forward to following your progress!

My involuntary comment to my lady friend Donna when I saw the African Princess was:
"WOW - - THIS boy can PAINT !"
-
The chief, the wife, children next? :)
Love the figures, look forward to seeing what you paint next.
-
Many thanks again! :)

That would be perfect wouldn't it? ;D
I'm afraid but it will be a witchdoctor.
Cheers,
Daniel

That's a fantastic start, can't wait to see the witchdoctor.
-
As promised: the witchdoctor!
The mask was so much fun to paint. Am already looking forward to the next one.

Daniel

I managed a half way decent copy of the paint scheme for this figure shown on the Foundry website and was pretty pleased with it. Then I saw your excellent work. Groan.
-
The witch doctor is so cool.
His mask is great.
-
Best one yet! :D
The witch doctor models are some of my favourite by Foundry and this one is outstanding. I love the subtlety of the design on the face mask. Brilliant. :)
-
That's a belter! Great work.
-
Your work on the witchdoctor is just great :-* :-*

Thanks lads! :)
Currently it's really hard for me to decide if I wanna go for painting warriors first so I could finish a playable warband much faster or if I should focus more on character miniatures like civilians or chiefs. I think finding a right balance is the way to go, don't you think so too?
QUESTION:
Does anybody know if Foundry sells blisters with african shields? The only pack that seems available is the Masai one.
Cheers,
Daniel
-
Paint a unit and then treat yourself with a character? It usually works for me.. :)
I remember seeing blisters of different shields on the Foundry stand at Hereward, I'm sure if you drop them an e-mail and ask they'll be able to sort something out. I recently purchased the Azande musketmen pack which isn't on their site at all.

Lovely. Those colours a brilliant.

Quick update:
I started my first terrain piece for my CONGO gaming board: an acacia tree for the typical savannah look.
That was my very first try to make trees out of wire. Went well so far, can't wait to continue with it and to star the others :)
Cheers,
Daniel

Very nice painting, Daniel, and I'm looking forward to your acacia tree ... :o
-
It looks great - I'm going to need a few acacia trees. I might have to see how you go about the rest of this and copy you!
-
Sorry that its been a bit quite in this thread the last weeks.
In the meantime I received the Northstar Congo Ngnoni box and painted already the first miniature for a colour scheme test (I gonna add the spear later on).
I tried to achieve a mixed look based on various inspirations: the face paint is Masai, the feather hat is Ngoni and the shields are Azande. Further I painted some scar tattoos on chest, belly and legs.
So what do you think about the colour scheme. Any suggestions and ideas?
CHeers,
Daniel

-
WOW How did you paint the tattoos?
-
Looks great as is,stick with this scheme :-*
Cheers
Keith
-
That looks really good. Are the torso scars put on with a toothpick or something similar?
-
That looks amazing! :o I love the shield design, seeing as I have a load of similar shields to do for my Azande, it's inspirational. :D
-
Fantastic painting on all those figures.
-
Love the new guy.
He is perfect.
Love the white around the eyes, cool.
-
Thanks again for your comments! Very motivating!
I painted the scars with a very tiny brush. First I painted spots with the darkest flesh color I used and then I painted a little bit higher placed spots with a lighter skin colour on the top.
The next three warriors are done and two of them are still waiting for their spears.
Cheers,
Daniel

Thank you all!
Any tips for painting the eyes?
Years ago I wrote a how to paint faces tutorial shown on a Hobbit dwarf for the old jomada blog. Maybe that could be interesting for you too.

UPDATE:
I got some Masai miniatures as well for my planned east african cinematic photographies.
The shepherd makes the start.

Very nice... I love :-* :-* :-*
-
These look great :-*
-
Lovely painting :-*
-
Wonderful. :o :o
-
Wonderful warpaint Daniel. You must be using a one-hair brush on that face ;) lol
-
The faces are great :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
and the warpaint
-
I'm so jealous of your skills! Lovely expressions on those faces.
-
I'm seriously impressed!
What shocks me most is the fact that it is actually a "fast" paint job. I can see all the brush strokes, all the colours are very definite.... yet, it's perfectly armonious. I still can't understand why.
-
Fantastic. Such consistently good painting. :-*
And I don't recall anyone painting the inside of the shileds in a weave pattern before. Just brilliant miniatures. 8)
-
So, on the acacia tree, are you going to make it so the lower branches are too high for a giraffe to reach? One of their favorite foods.
Which leads me to a vexing question, if giraffes so like acacias, how do those trees ever get tall enough to be out of the reach of a giraffe? Don't sleep again until you have a good handle to the answer to that question, now.
-
What a beautiful mini. I love your paint style.
-
Many thanks everyone!
In the meantime I finished three more warriors. I have painted know around 10 miniatures yet so it's almost half time. :)
Cheers,
Daniel

Again with the amazing faces :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Wow ,those minis are amazing :-* :-*
-
Thank you both!
Ive only managed to paint one single miniature for my congo warband in the last days because I was too busy in the fantasy area ;D
Still, I hope you like this one too.
Cheers,
Daniel
