Title: Paint Racks/Storage
Post by: Argonor on 25 August 2016, 10:39:49 AM
I just came across the vertical mdf storage solutions from Burn In Designs (I am down with a stomach ailment, and have nothing better to do than roaming the interwebs and running to the loo), and I own a large rack from Miniaturicum, but are there other (fairly cheap) ready-made solutions for storing paints out there (preferably some that can be used for all the common pot/bottle types (including droppers) - and what are your experience with them (if any), please?

Ow, get well.

Not much help, but since I've not got much wall available (mostly taken up with shelves and books and cabinets - oh,and the odd window too) I went a different route. I was lucky enough to come across an old metal box which used to contain some sort of instrumentation, looks like 1970s vintage, and I just packed the bottles in, and used plastic boxes for a second row above the first. It stows away nicely, and the paints stay in place even though they do not have holes to fit in - they are quite well packed, easy enough to remove but with insufficient space to topple as I used a wood spacer to fill in a gap at one end toonarrow to hold more bottles.

I'll be wanting a more formal storage solution for my paints in the near future as well. I'm hoping to find something that can store everything against the walls above my desk (yes walls; it'll be in a corner), below the planned bookshelves.

Right now, I've got them stored in two wooden boxes, which used to hold two wine bottle each (they were promotional gifts I received over the years), and those boxes are stored in a single drawer (ex kitchen cabinet).

My collection of paints is slowly outgrowing its storage capacity however, so the new one needs to be more spacious.

I'm torn though; I've actually always stored my paints in a drawer, which means they're stored in a dark and reasonably cool and temperature stable environment, which certainly has done them no harm. And even though the advantage of having all my paints arrayed right in front of me is obvious, I can't shake the suspicion that storing them like that, exposed to the bright light and the accompanying heat from my desk lights might shorten their shelf life (some of my paints are actually decades old)...

Thing is; in the place of the drawers I have in place now, I am tentatively planning to build in an airbrush booth with suction fan, with the compressor underneath. So there would be no more place for my paints there. So I may well be stuck with one or the other desk or wall mounted storage solution.

Oh the plans I have... lol

The one solution I'm most enthousiastic about right now though, is the Modular Workshop System (http://www.hobbyzone.pl/en/12-modular-workshop-system/) by a Polish company called Hobbyzone...

Thanks, I have hopes for tomorrow  :?

Well, I have 20+ years old paints that are still alive and well, despite being stored in plain view, and near my painting lamps.

Looks like something you could get in IKEA (apart from the dedicated paint racks)  :)

My interest in the Burn In stuff is because of the 'verticality'; they can be mounted on the wall, and you can - as far as I can figure out from the pics on their website - place them directly behind one another for quite a lot of storage in a limited space.

I have a lot of paints in cut down printer paper boxes for which I have made rather durable partitions out of thick cardboard - and although a cheap solution, it is a lot of work cutting out the slots to fit the partitions together - AND it has become a bit impractical, as I stack the boxes, and I always need that particular colour in the bottom one...  lol

The hobby zone stuff is ok, got three of them, mainly for Vallejo bottles.

self assembly and mount, but they are made for fairly specific bottle types, depending on your collections of bottles, tubes and other oddly shaped contains you might find them less useful.

Cheap option

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/40291766/

or

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/20126065/

and stick them on the wall. plenty others using similar for their paints.

Then of course you will want to look at the billy bookshelf, and doors etc for other storage.... :D

Both mentioned loads of times elsewhere, don't forget to check

for lots of ideas to steal/borrow from other peoples setups  :D

I use the lids from boxes of copier/printer paper from the office.
You can fit any make of paint in these; two lids hold my entire paint collection; they go on shelves in my painting desk can be easily slid out when required. And they are free!

I have 5 of these on a wall, with a cheap ikea table underneath, works fantastic and is a bargain. The table is throwaway if too paint wrecked eventually.

Overall I have about 300 paints on the shelves. It's a bargain solution, and looks great. I rack my paints in ROYGBIV then B&W, Skintone, Metallics, and Airbrush colours in a similar scheme. All single faced, with double/triple spares in behind.

Custom designed by myself and cut by a friend. 300 bottles of Vallejo in a 40 wide 28 deep and 33 cm tall area ()Basically 1 shelf of the very common half-width Billy from Ikea. I have a small sorting box for more commonly used paints, but that is it.

I use nail varnish display cases, a perfect fit for Foundry, Vallejo etc.

That's a good one...I'll have to see if I can find some of those.  My current MDF one is poorly designed.

Mine are all in a an old IKEA drawer but I have always wondered if anyone makes a racks so that you can store Vallejo's upside down (my preffered method to avoid clogging at the nozzle end).

Are there any like this available?
 ???

P.S. Get well soon, sir!

Thanks, I am up and about, again - have been since Friday afternoon, and was at Horsens Medieval Festival with the kids during the weekend).

I think, both Burn In and Miniaturicum have solutions for this:

Hmmm... seems that Miniaturicum may have ceased making those.....

This Rack from Warbases.co.uk (http://war-bases.co.uk/ACCESSORIES/PAINT-ACCESS?product_id=1120) is excellent.

I have two mounted on the wall at my workbench. That's 90 bottles of paint kept handy at all times.

Reasonable price, too!

Seeing that picture has given me an idea.
I think I will just knock up my own.

Thanks, mate.

Google or Ebay nail varnish racks. They come in clear plastic sheet and take about 40 paints a piece (size dependent) they are cheap and very robust.

Yep, I've been looking since I saw this thread, I'll be doing this route for sure - replacing my old MDF rack.

That might be the way to go - we have a potentially very expensive car repair coming up (a problem with the transmission), so I may have to postpone this part of my workspace reconfiguration, but I definitely shall have a look at those!

I just took a risk on an ebay seller from China...$11 shipped...internationally!  I picked up two.  We'll see if they're worthwhile.  If not, I'll buy some of the nicer ones on Amazon.  lol

Eh...kinda?  :D

The racks I ordered arrived, were a little smaller than I had figured from the dimensions.  One arrived with a cracked corner, and one arrived missing a piece of hardware to assemble it.  So, about as expected from an $11 rack.  The concept, however, is fine.  I'll end up ordering some larger/nicer ones at some point.  Right now the two are flanking my MDF paint rack which I was hoping to replace.  Each of the racks I purchased holds only 9x3 paints (27 total).
