Title: Gaming WW2 in 3mm?
Post by: N.C.S.E on September 23, 2016, 06:13:43 PM
Thinking about gaming the Eastern Front in 3mm.

Ultimately, I'd like to be able to run a large scale multiplayer Stalingrad game, with multiple commanders per side and a large area of the city of Stalingrad covered allowing for more of "what would Chuikov do?" rather than "What would Dmitri S. Pavlov do?"

Therefore I'm looking for rules which would be simple, not overly technical and fast paced enough to allow for continuous player involvement.

Do such rules exist? (Or come close to the ideal I've laid out?)

The answer is of course "yes" but it largely depends on what level/size of game you are interested in.

Spearhead will handle up to a division comfortably, but with Megablitz we've done twenty divisions or more at a time. At higher levels, everything is pretty abstract and it is easy enough to write your own rules.

Fighting in built up areas is extremely attritional though (aka boring) as compared to the manoeuvres outside the city. A number of board games have attempted to address how to model the city fighting at an operational level, and it is really quite challenging.

The encirclment and relief operations are much easier to game satisfactorily at an operational level, as they are more mobile.

I think you should look at PZ8 rules. They are free to download.
Very simple straight forward rules. One of the sets is for WWII.

I'd recommend Blitzkrieg Commander.

I like Blitzkrieg Commander as well but I've just listened to Meeples & Miniatures podcast with an interview with Sam Mustafa. He is writing an operational level set of WW2 rules called Rommel. Card based but can be used with minis. Unfortunately not out til late 2017.
