Title: Getting back into Man O' War - bretonnian fleet painted
Post by: Sixmilletoe on October 05, 2016, 09:10:00 PM
Good evening all,

I would just like to share with you all my latest project. First up, the Empire and Orc fleets.

I've owned the Empire fleet for many years and did not paint these myself. The Orc fleet is painted be myself and I've chosen a simple but 'Orcy' colour scheme for the fleet than that depicted on the games workshop boxes🙂

As an addition to the fleets, I have also remade all the card templates and tokens in scaled down acrylic to both save space and improve the aesthetics of the game.

Hope you enjoy!

I love your templates and counters - they look so professional. What's the process for making them?

Nice painting on the fleets (and I want to see more).
But your tokens are really a great idea and they are top !

Lovely stuff! Such nostalgia seeing them here, although painted much better than mine ever were back in the day.

Thank you all for your kind words! There will be much more to come soon hopefully including more fleets, acrylic game markers and battle reports with any luck!

I love your templates and counters - they look so professional. What's the process for making them?

As an architectural Modelmakers by day, I am fortunate enough to have access to a laser cutter and drawing software at work. In my free time(lunch breaks🙂), I draw/trace existing tokens from scanned images or free hand and convert them into various acrylic tokens.
Once drawn, the material is first etched(on both sides in many cases), removed from the laser and has paint rubbed into the etch and is then placed back into the laser for the final cut pass.

The stat templates require the same process as above with the additional process of assembly. They compromise of 3 layers of 1.5mm thick acrylic glued together using dichloromethane (plastic weld) for a clean bond. The relief between layers allows the 3mm thick tokens to locate well into each location and also be easy enough to remove.

Below are some pics of the the remaining fleets to paint and also an example of some acrylic in game markers.🙂

I just finished collecting every fleet myself..including an undead and lizardman fleet using some kitbashes, greenforest trading company ships and others.

I look forward to watching your progression

Yeah, got a bit carried away, but wanted enough Bretonnians to have a Bretonnians vs Bretonnians napoleonic style game :D

Back next week mate, then we'll arrange a game and hopefully do a battle report. Have you got any scenery we can use?

Some lovely work there, but you have my sympathies if you're trying to use Orcs in that game.  Their performance under the rules as written was so bad at least two of our locals quit the game over them way back when, and I sarcastically converted all of my Orc figs so that their ships were listing, battered. half-sunken wrecks (which was better than the fully-sunken state they actually wound up in during most games).

Still an unpleasant memory, and it ruins my nostalgia for the game.

very true, orcs are by far the weakest fleet. This will make any victories all the sweeter!

I have been reading up on Orc fleet tactics and it seems that although their ship of the line squadrons are sub par, their strength lies in the Orc hulks.

I think the write up in the link above is spot on and agree that when playing as the orcs it's all about attitude, not necessarily winning. They are the 'baddies' after all! ;)

Pretty much every word of that link is true, and most Orc players in the old days came to the same conclusion in just a few games, especially once the Plague Fleet stuff hit.  Skaven and Chaos and Dark Elves are "baddies" too, but their rules produce (at worst) decent games, and some combinations are just plain too strong.  I'm looking at you, teleporting Tzeentch fleet.

I still never managed a single win with Orcs in over two dozen games with them, but my closest fights were with fleets composed of maximized Hulks and none of the suicidal Drillakillas at all.  Hopefully you'll do better (or adopt house rules, which was the other general fix I recall) but do remember, while winning isn't everything, giving your opponent an interesting game instead of a challenge-free walkover is pretty important if you want to keep them coming back for games.  It's regrettably hard to put up a good fight with Orcs under RAW, and beating them up gets dull as quick as losing with them does.

I can certainly believe it. Although, if you could see how badly Jimbibbly rolls, I say the orcs chances of winning are significantly improved!  lol

Actually I've not. I had intended to make my own at some point, but I have enough on my plate just painting the fleets! Thanks for the pointer, I'll check them out.  :)

Not all of the Bretonnian lead pile, but enough for a 1000pt game at least.
