must be twenty years I've been painting on and off and this is my first vehicle I think.... didn't strip the original paint (didn't have a container big enough - she's big), but did what I could to hide the earlier decals and chips... painted in a darker olive green than the UNIT troops, Devlan Mud wash really worked well with the nooks and crannies... I think it looks better than than the original BBC livery, but of course the stripe had to stay (had toyed with doing it the UNIT beige, but as the stripe is at head height that would look silly) and once the UNIT logo was on, it helped bring the white stripe in a bit... homemade decals - first time in ages doing decals, so they may be a bit rough and ready compare to some, but I'm happy...

and a before and after shot...

the original had a knackered chasis so the body dropped at the rear, that was replace and I may have jacked up the wheels just a smidge compared to the original, but I reckon it (and the paint job) gives it more of a military look, very off-road... ideally though I'd like to have a could of steps down from the doors, but hey ho...
-
Great Job, a nice drab and heavy military look and big enough to squeeze the TARDIS inside. :)
-
Superb paintjob! Now, I know it´s from Dr. Who, but was the original an existing vehicle or did they do a bodyjob on a chassis for the piece? It seems familiar, but I cannot pin-point it.
-
LOL... shall i let them into a secret.
The original was a BBC outside broadcast van.

indeedy... both in the show and from the toy... can still see the decals on the before shot :D
-
That's great ! What a transformation. I don't know about the windows though; that's a lot of black. Any chance of trying a refecting-window effect?

Errr... obviously, I couldn´t escape a troop of Daleks even if I had a nice flight of stairs at my disposal. lol

Don´t tell me they can climb stairs now! :o Or am I messing things up with ED-209? o_o lol
-
That is a great job! Looks fantastic! Really looks well with your troops! :D
-
Don´t tell me they can climb stairs now!
always could*... just the budget was never up to it, they tried it in Revelation of the Daleks, but the effect was terrible, did it proper in Remembrance...

*(except for the first story where they drew power through static electricity running through metal floors - but then in their own city they didn't have stairs)
-
Very nice!
-
:-*
Very well executed!
Goes great with your troops! Well done!
-
Brilliant! I am so jealous.
-
Nice to see it finally finished, great job! :-*

Oh good Lord. How did mankind ever make it?!? lol
I only saw a handful of old (late 70s, from the look of it) episodes back in the 1990s. Whenever there were Daleks (not often enough for my taste), they were just rolling around in coincidentally favourably flat surroundings... ;)

the mint ones go for a nice price don't they lol
-
Totally inspired (caught this over at frothers too).
You've pushed me over the edge now ... time to start my own project :D
-
Very nice and really nice paintjob! I think a gloss on the windows would go a long way to making them look better.
-
thats awesome! love the decals too!
-
Thats great, like it. 8)
-
now with added windows... probably a bit more muted than had been suggested, but I like it...

Now that´s a very nice subtle addition! Not as dull or "hollow" as the black ones, and not as "garish" as those fancy reflection-effect windows that often look exaggerated.
-
Brilliant work. :-*
The windows are great.
Tutorial wanted for the decals, Please

lifted from Frothers for ease :D (and hopefully checked for fruity language)
I ordered a couple of sheets of blank decal paper from eBay
(these guys are good and quick and relatively cheap per sheet - eBay link (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/The-Artisan-Art-Shop_Decal-and-Craft-Printer-Sheets_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ4632233QQftidZ2QQtZkm) )
you need to get the right sort for your printer as running inkjet paper through a laserjet melts the paper or something - either way bad news (especially as I use the printers at work)
you also need to work out what your design is going to be (unless you have a flash printer that can print white ink) and get clear decal paper for dark designs or white decal paper for white designs... as the UNIT logo was a massive white circle, I went for white obviously, also allowed me to do white text...
designing your decal, you need massive resolution for crispness - these were at 700 pixels on an A4 sized piece of paper, I had done some ages ago with Jolly Bob piggybacking on a sheet that were at 300 and they were ok, but I couldn't find them and ended up doing some more and figured might as well go the whole hog and upped the resolution. you also have to fill the sheet, you print it and the whole sheet is then set, you can't do it piecemeal apparently, so you have to do a lot (anyone need some UNIT logos  ) which I figured would cover for some mistakes, and then allow for other vehicles as they came along...
I took a chance with my design, and knowing that it wouldn't be clear, I printed everything on a black background, that way I didn't need to be so precise when cutting the decal out of the printed sheet, I still did it as close as possible, but when I'd left the decal to dry on the model for 24 hours, I just painted over the excess to the edge of the design... worked a treat
-
The windows are changed in only a subtle way, but they look a lot better.
-
Nice windows! I might try it but I'm afraid I'll want to repaint all my vehicles ;)
-
nice work chris!!!!!!! :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Loving your work! All you need now is a 28mm Heat barrier.
How's the TARDIS interior coming along BTW?
-
Looks fantastic! Going to have to track one down.
You must have quite a Whovian collection now? The great unwashed demand battle pitures! ;)
-

I don't know what you mean... ;)

Oh dear - I was asking about this mobile HQ a while ago, then I go away for a whole month for work and the most of evil of giraffes goes and posts some pictures...
Belated congratulations - wonderful stuff. Have a celebratory five pints rapid!
