Title: Suggestions for Dwarfish Deity (mini), Please?
Post by: Argonor on 25 October 2016, 09:52:49 PM
As the caption says; does anyone know of one or more suitable mini(s) for a dwarfish god (I am thinking 'Of Gods and Mortals', that's why)?

Preferably a larger-than-life miniature with easily recognizable dwarfish features, or the likes.

Can be a statue- or golem-like thingy (dwarf giant?), as long as it is pretty imposing and fit for being the centrepiece of  an army.

The big dude in the bottom could work.

Nice one, thanks!

I'll see if I get more suggestions, but that one is definitely a possibility!

How about one of the Reaper Bones fire giants? I'm not a fan of the huge weapons, but they're certainly cheap:

Here's a slightly out-there thought, how about one of the Reaper Fire Giant minis?  They're suitably huge, they have very Dwaven builds and facial features, and they're wearing some fairly fancy armor and runed-up gear.  They favor swords over axes or hammers, but a weapon swap or kitbash might be doable.  For ex, here's a couple I painted:

Those are 60mm bases they're looming on.

EDIT:  Well blazes, I need to type faster.  Maybe they aren't such a far-out idea, eh?

I also really like a lot of the Reaper giants above, though I agree the weapons on some of them are ridiculous. I have the fire giant princess, possibly my favorite.

I actually have been looking at the female giants, and am contemplating using the fire giant princess for another 'godly' purpose.
I hadn't seen the Dwarf Goddess - and she might also be a very fitting subject.

Thanks!

That is a fantastic sculpt.  How'd I miss that?

Scibor Monstrous Miniatures has some 55mm scale dwarf heroes that might work. Though IMO the style lends more to monument statuary than living gods. CMON has them on closeout right now (https://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/54mm-plus-category/scibor-monstrous-miniatures-1-1), so it's a good opportunity to get them (relatively) cheap. I picked up this guy (https://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/54mm-plus-category/scibor-monstrous-miniatures-1-1/dwarf-lord-1-1.html) to use as a statue for Frostgrave.

Of the ones suggested so far, the Reaper ones look like the best as gods to me, but that's all a personal preference thing. Plus you really can't beat the price for the Bones versions, and since they're big and solid, they're likely to be some of the better (read: non-bendy) Bones examples.

I have the metal version of that Reaper fire giant princess, and apart from some fit issues with the front and back pieces (differential shrink is one of the problems of casting big stuff in metal) it's a very good mini.

Mine, in the pic above, is Bones. The only two complaints I have about it was dealing with some mold lines on her hair, and the bent spear shaft.

Sometimes there are problems with, er... flaccid Bones, and that was the case with this shaft... uh, so I gave her a hot bath to try to straighten it a bit, as it cooled and became more, eh... firm. That worked for a while, but after a while it became less erect. Um.... anyway, I hear that lots of people have similar problems. So, let's not judge anyone here. :-X

My (more serious) point being, the Bones version was sort of decent. In hindsight, I should have cut the spear ends off, put them on a metal or plastic rod, and replaced the bendy one.

 ;)

Depending upon your dwarf culture, there are many options that come from elsewhere.

One thing that might work for a decent cost is to snag some of the LotR or Hobbit action figures of dwarf characters and start there.

You could go down the route of earth/rock elementals as well.

Just off the top of my head (from google image searches):

They do, indeed. I'd be a bit timid trying to paint those sculpts up after seeng the painted examples on the website, though.  :o
