Title: (Commercial) W79: Flight of the Wild Geese
Post by: Mike Bravo Minis on 02 November 2016, 11:31:55 PM
Bringing a new hope to the Establishment on your W79 battlefields, MBM has been quietly (ish) working on a range of 28mm Private Army Mercenaries.

These will be in DPM, older pattern webbing, some mis-shapen berets, and a mix of weapons such as Uzis, SLRs, FN FALs, Bren and FN MAG.  These are sculpted and with the casters, but a sneak peak of what they were looking like so far (there's also a chap with a Bren who was a bit camera shy):

For African dictators with a wildfowl problem, we have also been working on a line of 28mm generic African paratroopers.  These will be in denisons, Portuguese caps, and FN FAL 50.61s.  Same status on these guys, so apologies for the camera-phone pictures:

These guys are all available for pre-order through a low profile BravoGoGo that we've been running.  Once back from the casters we'll be upping the PR and probably moving to Kickstarter to widen out the range to cover Congo proper (UN troops, Katangan Gendarmes etc etc).

'Wave 1'  (pictured) is sculpted and at the casters - those ordering in the next couple of weeks should have them by December.  'Wave 2/3' (6 extra mercs and 5 extra Africans) should be available during mid/late December.

Feedback welcome as there's still time to influence the yet-to-be-sculpted chaps.

I think Matakishi made something about the geese for Wargames Illustrated. These figures would fit perfect. Great stuff.

Gamer Mac - our wave 4 target is actually a vickers team, a chap with a Blindicide, and a medic.

Would also like to do a universal pack of a couple of politicians 'good' and 'bad', missionary/nun, etc but that may be a little ways off.

Interesting! They'd be very good representations of Dutch infantry in the early nineties as well, with those berets, FAL's, UZI's and MAG's.

I've always wanted to do a squad or two of my old unit, and these, combined with Crooked Dice's UNIT miniatures might just be the thing to finally get them together...

Out of interest, is there any chance of some head packs? In particular, beret heads, balaclava heads and M1 helmet heads?

Great to see this, always fancied gaming that movie ;D

As a request/suggestion, how about some of the African troopers with Machetes as well as their rifle?

Daeothar - hold that thought! I'll PM you over the weekend to get more info  (again - I think we discussed a while back?)

Dieselmonkey - short answer is yes, we can. Probably in the new year as I've busted our budget.

Malamute - Robi has sculpted a machete which can be added to the figures, but presume you mean being wielded? Might be something we can do if enough people would be keen.

Excellent Mike - they look like they will fit perfectly with my Governor's General Army figures

The more the merrier

Guess I might need to get some more landrovers cast up as well

Great-looking figures all round and certainly fit for purpose.  :)

Out of interest, is there any chance of some head packs? In particular, beret heads, balaclava heads and M1 helmet heads?

Floppy bush hats, British 'Turtle' and French 'OTAN' helmets, would also be quite useful for the setting; as used by the RSA and Rhodesians.

Certainly a beret head-swap for the Simbas would produce passable Belgian Paras for the Congo in the Mid '60s, if you don't mind the little differences and there being no FN MAG.

Unless you're able to get hold of an old Dinky die-cast Bedford RL, or are happy with the 1/50th ones by Corgi et al, we'd need to bully someone into making a 1/56th resin one. They were ubiquitous to South Africa, Rhodesia and I think Zambia too, until superseded by Unimogs and Mazdas etc., an iconic troop carrier.
Title: Re: (Commercial) W79: Flight of the Wild Geese
Post by: Mike Bravo Minis on 06 November 2016, 03:46:28 PM
Arlequin, I am actually bullying someone into making a Bedford (well, at least I think he knows it and said yes...).

There'll be an FN MAG for the African Paratroopers.  I'll check out those Belgians, as if the 'little differences' aren't that great it may be feasible to get some conversions moulded to save the hassle of head swaps etc.

Akula - Yes I think they should match very well.  I'll see if I can compare some against each other later.  And I need to follow up with your landies!  Well reminded!

Good news on the RL.  :)

Ideally for the Rhodesian War gamers, the cab doors need to be removable (and the roof partially replaced with a flat hinged 'lid', but hardly difficult modelling); for everyone else the normal production model should be fine.

Out of interest, all the weapons and kit used in the 'African' Wild Geese scenes was supplied by the SADF and was current for 1977, even down to the Vickers Guns and Blindicides; but not the five UZIs and the other prop 'character weapons'. I imagine that the uniforms used were purpose-made however, as they weren't of the 'Nutria' type used by the SADF back then. Incidentally, Ian Yule who played 'Tosh' had actually been a mercenary between acting stints (and had served under Mike Hoare, the film's technical adviser in the Congo) and Ex-Nasho Roger Moore was teaching drill on set. I imagine most people already know that when he was 16 (1944) Hardy Krüger had been drafted into the 38th SS Division.

As for the Belgian Paras, as far as I know (which is not too much), their tropic smocks, trousers, puttees and the way they wore their berets, were all 'British style'. Their webbing was similar to, if not actually, '37 pattern webbing, but with snap fasteners on the pouches; somebody else will probably know better here somewhere on the fine details. Searching for 'Operation Dragon Rouge' should throw up a lot of pics.

The most obvious difference that will stand out in 28mm, is that they (as well as the Katangese and ANC), used the distinctive Vigneron or 'Vig' as the main SMG; although UZIs followed as time went by. Heavy-barrel FALs were used instead of Brens and BARs, but adding a bipod and a 30 rd mag to a figure with a standard FAL shouldn't be too much of a hardship for folk.

Yes being wielded, just one or two. It might add a bit of extra character to the figures, especially in the context of the film.

Over at Sally 4th we've been busy working on a range of buildings and bridges to go with Dan's lovely miniatures.

Just finished the Control Tower last week, Airport building is just being cut this week and then we move on to making the barrack complex next week!

On non-Wild Geese stuff, I am plotting the next things on the to-do list: Toss up between Jadotville, Entebbe or some Rhodesians.  Pledge for what you'd buy here and earn a discount on what gets released:  https://www.mikebravominiatures.co.uk/collections/lgc  (https://www.mikebravominiatures.co.uk/collections/lgc)  RhSAS currently taking a narrow lead.

(and Carlos: Soviets off to be cast shortly, need to find someone to fix the Yanks and sort them out)

They look great,

I'm making good progress on our Wild Geese participation game for The Other Partizan.
All figures undercoated and strict program in place to paint 15 miniatures a week for the game. Last batch of mercenaries (apart from the new ones!) starting tonight, so will aim to do a painting article for my hobby blog as I do them.

Any one got a recommendation for the trucks?

Promod do 1/50 Bedford RLs, pricey but worth it.  Corgi does a civilian Bedford S that could work as a cheaper alternative with a repaint (i have a couple that I could paint up if that helps?) The Dinky ones are a tad small (1/60 I think?) but if it's just for markers...

I've got a couple of Tarv 1/56 Landrovers that would fit, but I'm leaning to 1/50 so having a go at knocking one up over the summer.

if you want air support I have a Dak and Fouga  on the work bench that should be ready in time (you can get a resin version of the one from the film but it runs to £60 +...)

If you want a bigger (1/50) version of the Studer then Solido do the GMC with the hard, Studebaker type cab. I picked them up quite cheaply a few years back. They also do a soft top and the 'sixties era M35.

I'd second Promod's Bedfords, they are superbly cast and very accurate kits.

Looking good!

Would love to see at least one guy, carrying large, heavy dufflebags, with the tip of a rifle slightly protruding, just for grins.  Mad Mike Hoare and 'is mates shouldn't 'ave all de fun on de African continent.

I forget which small country they were planning to take over, when someone spotted the weapon, but a major kerfluffle in "customs", and/or at the airport ensued after someone spotted that little error.

As for the machetes, shouldn't be too hard to scratch-build those, with a little ingenuity, and some styrene rod and plasticard.

Yesterday afternoon, I got to run a play test of our Wild Geese game that we are developing to run at Partizan with Buck and Tom Surdu.

I've added a write up off the game to my hobby blog @ http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Hobby-Pages/Hobby-Blog/Wild-Geese-Play-Test-with-Buck-Tom (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Hobby-Pages/Hobby-Blog/Wild-Geese-Play-Test-with-Buck-Tom)
