Decided to start with this project too take a break from star wars
I am wanting to build up a couple of war bands to play blood eagle
Anyway I may be breaking the rule as I have not finished this figure
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/1912_13_11_16_11_00_50_0.jpg)
But I need some help. I have some shield transfers for these but have never used that sort of thing before.
I was wondering the best way to go about using them. Ant hints or tips would be great.

What kind of transfers? Waterslide or stickers (LBMS)?
-
I think they are LBMS but I did not realise that they were stickers?

They are more a kind of stickers than anything else.
1) To punch out the boss hole in the middle, ude a leather multi-punch (if the shield is GB plastic, the 4th punch fits exactly)
2) cut out the design as neatly as possible with a sharp pair of scissors (some peeps use the curved nail scissors type)
3) Now peel off the clear film on the FRONT (yes- you actually see the back of the sticker, so a mirror image of the finished shield) of the transfer/sticker. I use the point of an x-acto to get an edge opened. The sticky part is under the film, so careful!
4) Apply the sticker to the shield, and try to avoid air bubbles
5) To ensure a snug fit, you can use a bit of blu-tac (or the likes) covered with a small piece of cling film and press it against the shield (remember to stabilize it with the other hand, so it doesn't break off)
6) Dip a finger in clean water and dab it on the paper on the front of the sticker so it gets soaked (a small drop or two suffices).
7) Wait a bit, until the paper come loose (10-30 secs). Remove the paper
8 ) Paint boss and any rims
9) apply a good layer of gloss varnish to seal the sticker (this is important - I've heard ppl complain that if not sealed, the sticker may dry out and shrink)
10) Aply matt varnish
The shields on my viking warband are all LBMS

Looking good Colin. The blonde hair is very convincing. How big will the war band be?
Kind regards
Andy

As small as I can get away with, somewhere between 6 & 10 figures a side will do it
In the long term I'll be adding civilians and various other things to use as objectives, also need a viking village and a monestry to raid. I am intending to use the table from my jacobite game

It sounds like a good plan.
I assume that Blood Eagle only has 6-10 models per side?
Kind Regards
Andy

very nice start
-
Oh and I have a revel viking longship to build as well

Managed to get the shield transfer on. Very fiddly, still need to trim the edge a bit and still to varnish it
-
That looks good Colin! 8)
-
very very nice indeed
-
I have a new phone with a 23Mp camera which is killing me, shows to much

I think he's looking good Colin! I really like the wood work on the shield.
-
If you have a 2MP camera, take the picture slightly further away and crop the pic afterward.
-
I am also learning how to crop pictures on the phone as well

Sounds a lot like my Blood Eagle project - just now painting civvies, and planning to paint some sheep up next (and then I'll get barrels and crates - would you belive, I have none such things...? :o

Only one? ;)

Can vary a lot - if you go for well-equipped (and armoured) warriors, you can easily make up 300 points within that number. If you go for lighter troops, more will be needed to swell the ranks. Blood Eagle has a completely open points system, so you can design your profiles to fit the models you want.
-
Yes. It was your threads that inspired me to get blood Eagle and the vikings
I am sticking to one ship at the moment just for scenery not sure if I fancy ship battles
-
A small update
Finshed another two Vikings and I also have another four 90% done but I decided I needed some buildings to fight around so also built the first one. Paint tomorrow

The red was just a bit of fur I pick up at work
I have also started a church to fight over

Great stuff Colin! :o
I love the use of GS to do the heads at the ends of the wooden frame! 8)
-
Looking great, I like the house- in fact I prefer it to the ones I made :)
-
very nice house and great painting

I had to do the green stuff work myself so it is not very good
My usual sculptor is on holiday, how's the holiday?
-
Great stuff, the house is excellent :-*.
I like the bareheaded chap, he's a mean looking individual, his shield is lovely. ;D
-
Nice Vikings, sir.
And that house is rather lush, great woodwork and the carvings are brilliant.
:-* :-*
Great idea to use the Jacobite board, it should work perfectly.
Make the most of what you already have and get good use out of it.
:D
-
Coming together nicely!
And you have already overtaken my efforts by starting a nice longhouse! (As always, I cannot keep to just one project and finish it... ::) )
-
One tip for the LBMS transfers: When you first get the sheet, peel the entire sheet of covering plastic off, then lay it back down again. It helps if you peel it mostly off but leave the edge attached so that you can lay it back down precisely.
I do this because over time, the glue seems to set more strongly. I've had to throw out several older sheets of LBMS transfers because I simply couldn't remove the protective plastic sheeting without destroying the transfer. If you peel the sheet of first, and lay it back down, it doesn't set in place as strongly and when it comes time to actually use the transfer it removes a lot more easily.
Great work on your models, and that building looks awesome as well!

Difficult! ;) 30 degree heats and great food!....difficult!
I would fire the sculpter!

The house is looking good especially the dragons heads. Looking forward to seeing it painted.
Will you thatch your church well?

Yes I think I will. It will give it the right age look

That is great advice - I think I must do that with my shields and banners transfers!

Finished my longhouse

Now on to my church
-
That came out great, the thatch is really well done. The color looks way more accurate than what I was able to accomplish.
-
That's ace Colin! :-* The roof has come out great! 8)
-
Lovely job Colin. :)
-
Excellent!
Are you going to make interiors and dung heaps too?
-
Looking good!
:-*

Thanks Guys
Not sure about interiors but I may try a dung heap
-
Great stuff so far Col, I love the long house it's a cracker :)
-
The long house has come out really well, the dragons heads certainly look the business, but to make them stand out even more have you considered painting them in brighter colours.
Everyone needs a dung heap - go for it. lol lol
-
PS for dung heaps dr zombies and dr Vikings are both well worth looking at.
I do worry about these Danish doctors
-
Did someone say dungheaps!?
I don't know how but I have completely missed this thread. Some great stuff going on here. I like the dragon heads and the thatch on the house.
-

Dung heaps are all the rage in Denmark this season.
Every self-respecting Dane must have one!
;D

Now I almost did not want to reveal that I was pondering about which kitchen utensils I could hack to pieces and use for a dungheap, just the other day... lol

No Dung heap Yet
Just this

Just the tower to finish and the roof to do
There is some wooden frame work for a wattle and dobe for the small attached house
The church will have a slated roof the house will have thatch.
What do you think?
I also got some monks and things to populate it, from gripping beast.
-
Looks like the beginnings of a fine church to me. :)
Architecture may be a tiny tad too advanced (pointed arcs and tower - I think the 'Gothic' style it was introduced after the Norman Conquest, but I may be wrong) for the 'Legendary Dark Ages', but as it will be a great centrepiece for any table, who cares, really - I am looking forward to seeing it finished!
I 'm having a hard time stomaching that everyone seems to build stuff faster than me lol
-
Do you know why it is called the Dark ages?
It was full of Knights.... ;D
I'll get my coat.
Church is looking good.
-
Great stuff Colin! :-* Your skills with the wee blue bricks are really paying off!
-
Oh I like that :-*
Will it do for Vikings and the '45 do you think? :)
-
Nice work, Colin.
This project is coming along very nicely indeed.

I don’t know why you are putting so much effort in to it, its only going to get burnt, pillaged and – hum not sure about the 3rd thing the Vikings did though. lol lol lol
Seriously though it's looking great, I think the windows are good for a saxon church, I have a picture of one, I will look it out tomorrow if I remember.
Where is the dung heap though. ;)
-

You are clearly not of Viking stock. Every child in Scandinavia knows you burn last!

And I thought you liked your women crispy. Doh :D
-
I may be wrong about the window. This is the church I was thinking of St Peters at Barton on Humber.
The tower is Saxon with the top floor being norman. The top of the windows are triangular, which is what I thought yours were.
Looking again at your model the window appears more rounded IE gothic at the top. But what the hell - it's only going to get burnt - after everything else that these Danes do lol

Any strange architecture is due to the abbot who has an interest in roman buildings where he got the idea for the couple of strange arches in the door and window
Also in the picture are some laymen to help protect the church from viking tourists
-
Can you lift off the roofs?
Either way, it should do fine on the table! :)
-
Terrific!!!
I approve!

Yes all three can Lift off will post a pic later on

Lovely stuff. Especially liking the bee hives - got to get the honey to be able to make mead.
-
That's a great build, well done!
-
That's turned out great Colin! :-* Nice see you back at it! Game soon?......well after the holiday?
-
Brilliant!
I really like that design, sir.
The thatch 'extension' is a nice touch.
:-* :-*
Terrific!!!
I approve!
It must be good if the real Crazy Viking approves.
:D
-
That's brilliant Colin. I particularly like how you've done the wall.
-
Again, a wonderfull thread. :-* :-* :-*
Keep it coming.
-
Hi GM I'm pleased you are continuing with this thread, the church has turned out very differently to how I imagine it would from the initial pics you posted. It's good to see the very different styles, stone and daub walls and different roof textures, makes it a very individual building.
The bee hives are ace, I like them a lot.
Sorry to hear about the job though, hope it's just temporary.
-
Missed this mate. It's turned out great 8). I like the different styles.

Are you still on holiday ??? lol
cheers

Great looking building with lots of character. Good luck on the job hunt.
