Title: Which British regiment should I paint
Post by: Marshal Neigh on 18 November 2016, 04:23:30 PM
Hi all,

I'm looking for some suggestions as to which British Peninsular regiment I should paint next having just finished a load of riflemen?

I have a box of warlord peninsular line infantry so I don't want to paint a light regiment but I don't really have any preference a to which regiment although it would be good to paint one that saw a fair amount of action so they can be re-used. I would have picked the 51st as I am from Yorkshire but they are light so not them just yet - any suggestions along with why would be greatly appreciated!

thanks

I'd go with either the 33rd, Duke of Wellington's Own, of the 68th Durham Light Infantry.  The LI were used as regular line infantry just as much as skirmishers as they were still armed with the Brown Bess, not the Baker during the Peninsular period.  Or you could opt for the Coldstream Guard, regular Line regiment with many battle honours. (hint, hint)

The South Essex, later the Prince of Wales' Own Volunteers, of course - Line infantry, Light company with attached Rifles and, of course, Richard Sharpe!

And of course totally fictitious ;)

I'd go for the 27th, Inniskillings. They had a distinguished record in the Peninsula.

Are you sure?  I've seen them on TV and on the internet.  So they must be real.

I second the South Essex, but I'm a romantic, I'll be doing the for my Sharp practice Brit force when I get around to them.

My favorites are the 3rd and 5th regiments as I really like their Regimental flags.

23rd foot, Royal Welch Fusiliers. Record, second to none and you can paint or apply decals in the form of the Prince of Wales feathers to their knapsacks.

Is coming in second behind a nun really something to carp on about?  lol

Well as anyone knows, the nun's habit is the favourite disguise of your Nazi paratrooper/ fifth columnist.  Being shifty buggers surprise is the key to swiftly immobilising the swine.

These chaps have the right idea.

Wow , some great suggestions there, thanks for all who responded.

the 33rd I will discount as they didn't see any action in the peninsular
the 68th were a light regiment and I don't have the correct figures to paint a light battalion
the coldstream guards are a good candidate though
the 44th 2nd battalion saw lots of action in the peninsular
the 11th foot are a good choice as well as are the 27th
despite the excellent painting and the provided flags ( thank you very much ) , I'm afraid I wont be doing the south essex
the 88th , 3rd, 5th and 23rd are also all good choices.

Hmm, choices, choices.

Well after a bit of researching I think "The Devils Own", the 88th Connaught Rangers are going to be the ones.

thanks for all the replies
