Title: Tokens - now with posters on 'urban' backgrounds to blend in better
Post by: Bellboy on 14 February 2009, 03:31:18 PM
Acrylic didn't work.  So I've dome some custom tokens, printed out on a colour printer and pasted to 3mm foamboard.

Some examples here - and the tokens in use for a CoZo game.

Note that I've produced some specific items such as Alien Control (for a specific scenario where an alien had mind control over people who came within a certain distance) and Radioactive (nuclear power plant leakage causes havoc - and zombie infestation).

The skull rock is actually a cunningly disguised satellite uplink that the Grymn are defending against the automatons.

Mid-battle.  Automaton down but one Grymn pinned and the other about to run away.  The uplink is as good as won.

Harby under alien control!  A radioactive predator kills one Grymn, forcing the other to Panic.  Run away!

Nice looking counter, but why do you have bothan opportunity fire counter and an overwatch counter? Aren't they the same thing? 8)

Nice idea - my only objection is, they do not blend in well with a gaming table. They certainly do the job, though!

I'm always in two minds about counters - on one hand I want to be able to tell the exact status of the models, on the other hand I want a nice looking gaming table. A balance is hard to find  :?

Yes - they are both the same.  Just trying different types!

I just got an idea:

How about making counters that way, but 'pimp them up' to look like pieces of slate/concrete/whatever with the symbol(s) shoving as a piece of a poster or something? They'd 'blend in' better without loosing the 'instant reckognition' effect.

That's a great idea! Some inspiration:

I like that idea.

Those are very nice! The edges can then be painted or flocked/painted to match the facing and/or the table  8)

Glad that I could make a useful input!

Strips of tokens

In action...Alien forces one cop to panic (with apt image) while the other does a Forrest

Cops again - one is on 'Keep Down' while the other is on Overwatch (denoted by the Stakeout poster)

Some variations on Panic and Rout - the Batman Panic, the Joker Rout and the trusty Forrest.

Lovely, I will surely use this idea and make some counters of my own 8)

Darn, you work fast  :o 8)

I think those tokens look much better on the table - the kind of stuff I could be tempted to use  :)

I would at least use a coloured marker on the edges, though, to cover the white.

I like the idea of posters  :-*

Excellent for my urban games

Wanted to prove that it is a fast and easy way of producing specific tokens for games.

You're right - I just need to edge them now (dark grey for concrete, dark red fro brick), like this...

Seen from the side to show that filling in the white makes 'em MUCH better

Thanks for the suggestions etc. - I'm much happier with the idea now.

Plus we'll never use 'rout' again.  From now on it's 'doing a Forrest'.

That's a great idea.

Now I'm inspired to try some newspaper headline tokens for my pulp games.

Awesome work Bellboy. Any chance you would post the images so we can "borrow" them ? By the way...what is that truck in the background? it looks perfect for my mobile command post idea. :D

Happy to take requests - you give me the picture and text, I'll produce a sheet in MS Word and e-mail to you.

Excellent. What software do you use to make the tokens, before putting them on a word sheet I mean, as I'm assuming you do? 8)

Use Macromedia Fireworks.  Form a Canvas to 75 pixels square, place background then import graphic (i.e. poster).  Freeform Arrange to tilt it at an angle then save (as a .png file).

Then open the file in MS Paint and 'save as' a jpeg.

Open MS Word - insert new jpeg picture, copy and paste multiple times.

Repeat for other graphics.

Once a sheet is full, print out and stick to foamboard (see above for the rest).

Where did you find Macromedia Fireworks? Not one I've heard of. Thanks for the explanation too. 8)

You could do this in most graphic editors. I'd use Photoshop, for instance (I happen to have a legal version that came with a digicam).

I also have a small freeware progtram called pdf995 that transform any document into a pdf - I'd do that when I made up a sheet with a nice mix of counters - cannot be f****d up by mistake  ;)

Thanks Argonor.

As it says - airport fire truck sprayed black for my BioHazard team.

Just need to attach a biohazrd logo and we're in business.

Macromedia - don't know (was loaded on the work computer).

Great counters, and the gaming looks fun as well.  I hope this isn't considered thread-hijacking, but I was wondering if you could tell me what game you're actually playing?  I keep looking at Mark Copplestone's Future Wars range and would love and excuse to buy / paint some of them.

Thanks,
JET

I play Combat Zone mainly.  Easy rules and lots of flexibility with the rules extentions / scenarios supplied on http://combatzonechronicles.net.

Notice they haven't got any rules for Predators and Aliens yet - I may develop some in the near future (trying to think how to make invisibility work in a games environment).

I did have a copy of Future Wars but mislaid it   >:( .  Anyone out there got a copy they'd like to sell?

Predator and alien rules shouldn't be too difficult to whip up for a game. Perfecting them for balanced games would take longer though. There are also already some rules for "hunter" aliens (predators) and "feeder" aliens (Alien aliens) by Doug but I don't think they have been playtested (the points costs are definately wrong):

http://combatzonechronicles.net/cozo1/xalien1b.htm

Other than that I love Combat Zone 8)

I have been tempted by CZ more than once... May get the rules sooner or later.

Future Wars can be had from Copplestone .... WHAT??? No rules available from there, anymore... what happens???

Yeah, noticed that.  The link doesn't work OR he doesn't sell them any more.

Dropped Mark C a line about it but no answer...
