Title: Giles' warmgrave adventures (Scenery & Monsters)
Post by: giles the zog on 26 November 2016, 01:07:50 PM
Well I wasn't going to have my own topic, but here goes, as otherwise I'll clog the board up with more junk.

JP and I have worked through all the scenarios in the main rule book, so I thought now was a good time to link to my postings on my blog roll. The latest postings are for The Library scenario.

The link below, includes lots of Mordheim stuff which is where I started out a decade ago, but the more recent stuff is Frostgrave stuff, even if it is a very warm version of Felstad !

https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/category/mordheim/

We had a second game, The Complex Temple, and I'll be posting that later today/tomorrow...

There may also be feline interludes.

Next bat rep up, this time the Complex Temple.

JP's luck with the dice deserted him and mine was uncomfortably good at all the right/wrong times.

Here's the latest scenery, more of a renovation.

Built from foam board, artists card, pizza box card and various metal and plastic gravestones.

It would be easy to make a much frostier version !

A very nice renovation mate!

But PLEASE stop calling my wizard evil. Just because he wears black... and summons demons... and zombies... and bone darts...
Oh ok, so he's evil!

A quick update on the blog as to why I like Frostgrave - maybe food for thought - maybe preaching to the converted.
https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2016/12/26/frostgrave-reflections/ (https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2016/12/26/frostgrave-reflections/)

Key thing is in the interests of role playing I am canning my current Captain and will introduce a new captain from scratch, simp-ly because I have nearly finished painting a new figure to represent her !

So there.

(JP, breathes a short live sigh of relief)

More tomorrow with scenery and maybe more. I have to clear the kitchen table for later in the week when I have a warhammer game, and so will have to finish off a few pieces of scenery and some figures for Frostgrave.

Another version of events that JP took part in along with three of our mates who are relative or total newbies to Frostgrave:
https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2017/01/25/fg-a-four-way-battle-of-newbies/ (https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2017/01/25/fg-a-four-way-battle-of-newbies/)

A second bat rep to follow.
IN which I actually played.
I must get quicker as I have another games session lined up for Saturday.

Sorry don't know, picked up at a show, removed the packaging and there it was left for ~10 years.
Came in a yellowish resin if that helps anyone identify it for us ?

Great report - as for your comment about not enough treasure, aren't you supposed to have ~3 per player?

And another scenery question: who makes those dias?

Just checked the rules - you are quite right !
We have been doing ourselves down.
I guess it is because JP & I have got used to 2 player games.

Just in time to correct things for Saturday when I have another couple of multi-player games set up.

Thanks for the report!

What's that central ruin on your board?

It's the LOTR Amon Sul (Weathertop) resin piece from Forge World now OOP.
Available on e-bay for £450 or so.

I've only used it a few times so brought it out for some fun.

The nearest I've seen is this:

yes I have several of their other pieces and they are good quality and can be used for a number of games.

I hope to deploy one of their other pieces (now OOP) this w/e.

Haven't tried chopping them around though I have seen others do this - the foam is very sturdy and comes with static grass already glued on.

Second battle JP and I had: Field Study

Total disaster for me, with most dice rolls against me, plus a self inflicted wound of not having my war bands costa on my laptop, and then I managed to kill the Golem meaning no XP for any of the wizards.
 :(

Two more write ups to follow this week.

Ta - they are useful, as noted on my blog the set comes with ruined versions, it's in the order I'm awaiting for and will collect on Sunday.

For £18, they're good value for money.

I should have put a figure for scale purposes. The triathlons are about five inches high, by about 4 inches wide, with the central gap about 30mm wide.

The third WHFB Arcane Fulcrum, another scenery piece ideal for Frostgrave.

Still, another pile of grey plastic put together nd not rattling around.

https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2017/05/08/gate-templar/ (https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2017/05/08/gate-templar/)

Thwarted last night by photo bucket on a go slow that and poor light, so the image below is a taster and doesn't catch the violet properly.

JP and I had two games today from the Thaw of the Liche Lord campaign./

Here's my write up of the first game - The Storm of Undeath.
https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2017/05/12/fg-storm-of-undeath-part-one/ (https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2017/05/12/fg-storm-of-undeath-part-one/)

the prone figures are the armoured skeletons prior to their "revival".

A fun and simple scenario we did in about an hour or so, which surprised us.

We then had enough time to go on to the next scenario which took longer and was much more cinematic and bloody !!

:D looks like twas way fun...nice shot KIY.
I really like the wall that matches the pringle towers (I'm stealing that tuff btw)
cheers

It was indeed a good shot.

For the walls/scenery, I have a tester pot of dark grey matt emulsion done up in a local DIY shop, that means I can standardise all the scenery pieces I use, including bases, and then only use the more expensive Foundry/GW acrylics for the highlighting.

You will in time.

The painting of yellow, and even red, is a bit tricky.
But given the name of the wizard, I had to go back and re-master it.
Lots of ayers over a good foundation is the key.

C33 Wizard on Whirlwind.

Just finished this off.

How I can use it in Frostgrave is TBC, but its a lovely model.

Maybe an aerial combat scenario with the Wizard on carpet ???

I think both of us will be playing slightly differently next time. :-)

Having had to "right size" my apprentice in "here comes the flood", JP promptly had to replace his too - a quite bloody day as I don't think we've lost both apprentices in one gaming session ever.

Third and final battle with Jp from the long w/e where we both avoiding a certain event.

https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2018/05/28/fg-more-ulterior-motives/ (https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2018/05/28/fg-more-ulterior-motives/)

We used the Ulterior Motive3s cards to liven things up.

And we had a right ruckus.

Next up, two games I had with Alan.

Finally, the first of the two games I had with Alan.

The first, finishing off the Golem campaign from the FG Folio:

https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2018/06/06/fg-the-house-of-the-golem/ (https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2018/06/06/fg-the-house-of-the-golem/)

Quite a fracas in the middle of the board after the Golem was destroyed.

Also, a post about Crabs !

https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2018/06/08/fg-with-magnetic-force/ (https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2018/06/08/fg-with-magnetic-force/)

A hard fought game, though I think I came off best, as Alan's sorcerer seemed unable to cast spells.

A year ago, Mantic did a Kickstarter which a few of us bought in to, it was delivered today. Lots of plastic terrain specially dungeon related stuff.

here are my thoughts and some photos of the actual items.

I have never bought from Mantic before, but this stuff is good, especially for the Maze of Malcor.

There are other updates to the blog with a new wizard or two, and some more thieves.

My mate Jim's Warden has a spell that summons creatures. Plus the scenario also had rules for as long as the screamer monkey was alive, an animal randomly turned up.

So yes there was a lot of stuff going on.

No home brewed ruled rules.

I got to use my new Mantic Library terrain pieces that I have slaved away over - more to come - along with a load of older metal dungeon items I have accumulated over the years.

Ironically, Alan, his wife Rita and I had discussed purging rubbish after 5 years of not being used so its a good job some of these items had not been subjected to such a purge as some were ~27 years old.

This day really was like "Plan 9 from Outer Space", so bad with my dice rolls it was funny !

Right, back in action after a stint in a splint (not joking) 9 hours in A&E 6 without water and then the nurses wondered why I drank 2 jugs of water...yes jugs and I pointed to the poster on the wall opposite me exhorting people to drink water !

Now, back to the sub jerk in hand another games session with Alanb. I have omitted many and may well be updating many posts as we have been gaming over the last 4 months honest.

This one is The Lair of the Crow Mage from the Wizard's Coven.

Always annoying as your thug trying to escape with the loot is cut down !

No it didn't end well.

More to follow. :-)

Old Mother Parma was painted for the games, and after dropping off at the model shop is now varnished, she'll probably be killed shortly. :-D

Apprentice down !
But not out...

Now to pillage the backlog.

Alan (Tipstaff), and Old Mother Parma completed the min campaign"The Blade of Barael" today

https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2019/10/04/fg-baraels-blade/ (https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2019/10/04/fg-baraels-blade/)

I fully expected to be whipped on this one, but it turned out very different to what either of us expected.

I spent time distracting the Half-Breed to allow OMP to teleport to the throne, and get the blade.

Due to time constraints I had to flee with the treasure rather than hunt down the Half-breed.

This write up is a year late, but I thought I'd better get at least one scenario written up before today's session that will finish the mini campaign off.

Enemies without number - lots off barbarians between Shazzam ! and the treasure.

I have the second scenario to write up yet, and then there'll be today's scenario or two to write up. Digital cameras - friend or foe ?

It's a friend to me, but you need to make sure the lighting is good, in order to see the details better.
Title: Re: Giles' warmgrave adventures (Enemies without Number)
Post by: giles the zog on 11 October 2019, 05:55:02 PM
Unfortunately, the lighting is not under my control, JP's dining room is north facing, and as per today if the weather is inclement, the light levels are rubbish, and I have to manipulate the images as best I can. Similarly, Alan my other gaming friend, has a south facing games room so I have the opposite problem where light is coming in strongly from one side.

This is why the static photos of figures I have painted are IMHO better than the more dynamic photos of games in progress.

When I am galactic dictator this will all change weight a perfect games room with lots of lighting and a professional photographer, unlike my own amateur efforts.

I sent the dog in to keep Hashpot busy, but a wizard plus a bear ()animal companion) is a bit too much for a lone hound.

But then the war hounds always die in our games. !  :D

Slightly delayed AAR, first of what will probably be three updates. We have some newbies playing with us now and we held a game own 29th February. First game was a scenario straight out of the rulebook. We had two tables of three players.

https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2020/03/19/fg-out-of-time-part-one/ (https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2020/03/19/fg-out-of-time-part-one/)

My narrative is for the not JP table, I have some photos of their table I'll post when I can.

We went right to the edge for our 3 way battle over one treasure chest !

The second game, a custom scenario using some of the ideas from Perilous Dark, and the scenario Dog Days.

https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2020/03/21/fg-out-of-time-part-two/ (https://thelostcityofcarcosa.com/2020/03/21/fg-out-of-time-part-two/)

Third part will be the other tables, , who had for the custom scenario a different experience about how it played out.

First piece of TTCombat scenery.

More vacc formed ruins on the way.

I recommend not getting behind professional decorators at the queue for tester pots in DIY stores, especially when they are running through an order of 8 mixed pots.

Tester pots are definitely the way for doing large amounts of scenery.
