Title: Revised Twilight of the Sun King (1680-1720) and scenarios now available
Post by: WFGamers on December 03, 2016, 08:35:57 PM
An extensively revised version of the innovative Twilight of the Sun King rules and a scenario book are now available.

The Twilight of the Sun King: Birth of the Age of Reason rules focus on the period 1680-1720. The rules are aimed at re-fighting large battles with moderate resources and in a relatively short time. Units are ‘brigades’ of about 2000 infantry or 1000 cavalry. Basing, figure size or unit size are not important. All measurements, movements, ranges, etc, are in ‘base widths’ and the players decide what this will be.

The rules are simple to pick up but reflect the warfare of the period. For example, combat and morale are combined into a single dice roll. Play testers commented that you feel like an army commander and that the rules have a great period feel.

The first scenario book, Louis XIV at War, features 10 battles as various sizes and types from Western Europe.

Four from the War of the Grand Alliance (1688-1697) – Fleurus, Boyne, Landen/Neerwinden and Marsaglia.

Six from the War of Spanish Succession (1701-14) – Luzzara, Speyerbach, Blenheim, Ramillies, Almansa and Almenar.

A second scenario book will appear shortly with 10 battles from the Great Northern War (1700-1721) and the Ottoman wars of the era.

The rules and scenarios are published by the Pike and Shot Society and can be obtained from them, http://www.pikeandshotsociety.org/ (http://www.pikeandshotsociety.org/), and other retail outlets.

Many thanks for notification on this. I see that P&SS now have Paypal linked up, that makes it easier. Have they decided yet whether they will do PDF versions of the titles?

And can you provide any insight into any differences to the 1.1 version please?

Hi,

I think PDF's are certainly on the way, at least for some of the societies titles. It is likely be the author's choice and I think that it will take some time.

The new version has many changes to the previous version. I think that was circa 5 or 6 A5 pages, the new version is 23 or so A4 pages plus another 10 or so on other things. Most of the additions are aimed at better reflecting the period rather than drastic changes to the core system.

There is a review here which should help - http://www.wargamer.com/reviews/review-twilight-of-the-sun-king-second-edition/ (http://www.wargamer.com/reviews/review-twilight-of-the-sun-king-second-edition/)

We are having continuing problems with our website. We had hoped to have pages dedicated to the rules up by now but that has not been possible.

So we have a PDF scenario available for a 'what if' GNW engagement at Grodno in 1706. The Russians and Swedes operated in this area at this time but in the real war their was not a major battle. This scenario is a 'what if' based on this. This is available at the Yahoo group or directly from me. Contact me at wyreforestgamers@yahoo.co.uk if you want a copy.

I've actually been able to access PSS merchandise page today, and this time the Paypal buttons have worked, order put in and successfully paid for.

Good review by Bill Gray as well, really appreciated his comments and honesty  :)

I would be interested in the Grodno 1706 too, so will email you, as unfortunately from past experience, I'm really not a fan of Yahoo.

McDoom:

I think many people feel the same about Yahoo and possibly it is causing problems here. Have you sent an e-mail to the yahoo e-mail address? If yes it didn't arrive - pm me here with your address and I will send the scenario to you.
