Title: British Fighting in the Near East in WW1
Post by: Maldegen on 16 February 2009, 10:33:32 AM
Hello,

I'm looking for 28mm miniatures for my Lawrence of Arabia-Campaign. Since Artizan is developing it's "Arab Revolt" range there are nice Arab irregulars (and camel mounted as well in the future).
For Turks and British I tend to get the Woodbine Design miniatures by Gripping beast. Most of the ANZACs look right for me, although I'm not sure whether the ANZACs could be used as generic British troops in Palaestine, too.
Most of them wear short khaki trousers. In my Osprey books in the Near East some British wear long and some short trousers.
Was there a special uniform code or had they been wearing short and long trousers all together?

What do you think, can I use the Gripping Beasts? Or do you have any other suggestions for WW1 British in the Near East?

Regards, Ralf

There are no camel riders at the moment, but somewhere I read that they are coming. (Or I hope so, at least!)

The only theatre where British troops were issued with slouch hats en masse was Salonika, so the Woodbine Anzacs aren't really your best bet for Palestine.

Brigade Games and Copplestone both do British troops in shirtsleeves order and khaki drill shorts.

The Woodbine Designs British figures are supposed to be troops in serge uniforms (as worn on the western front), but these uniforms were also worn in Palestine and other 'tropical' places when the weather was cold. In some pictures you see troops with serge jackets and KD shorts on. All kinds of combinations are possible.

Khaki drill is a light sandy colour, the serge uniforms were much darker, and the colour varied from a greenish to a brownish khaki. You could paint up the Woodbine Brits as if they are wearing Khaki Drill, but khaki drill leg wear was usually shorts. Photos of KD trousers are few and far between, though it seems they did exist. You could paint KD jackets and serge trousers, that would look good, and I have seen that in photos.

Thanks, Plynkes. I really mistook the slouch hats for wolseley helmets  :o
I looked at the Brigade Games Brits - they look very nice!

The Woodbine "section packs" come with separate heads including the sun helmet as an option. They're nice figures - I've just painted a pack (with service caps) for my 1938 TA.
Wish they'd do some Lewis gunners with optional heads as I want some sun-helmeted ones for my brother's 1918 Palestine British.

Thank you, Maldegen and all the repliers, for this thread. It's been quite helpful reading through it. I've been getting so confused about what I may use my copplestone british for (especially since I haven't done any proper research yet), so this is helpful.

For Arab Revolt "British Troops" you are mostly looking at Dismounted Camel Corps (non-existant figures, you could probably use dismounted Battle Honors SA Horse), Egyptians (again not available, but see below), Lewis Gun teams, Gurkhas and some Indian Army troops (along with lots of Arabs, of course). Not many (none, besides the Lewis Gunners, that I can remember) regular British Troops.
I'm not a real expert on that theater so I could be wrong, but I'd get some Copplestone or Eureka Gurkhas and Copplestone or Eureka "Muslim" Indian troops to compliment your Arab figures. There were some French (colonial) mountain guns and Egyptian mountain guns as well and in an old book I saw a photo of an Indian Vickers team attached to the Arab Northern Army. Brigade Games generic Askaris might work for the Egyptian troops or maybe even KAR figures, I don't know.
good luck,
Scott Pasha
