Hi guys!
I'm gonna spend 6 days in HK, and i was wondering if anyone here had any experience - or maybe lived - in Hong Kong.
I'm aware this is not a travel forum and i'm not seeking travel advices, however i'm always looking for modelling inspiration, and i'd love to produce some good references repository, possibly a collection of billboards and insigna to share with you all!
What i'm after are less touristic and friendly areas to roam, or - when possible - contacts of locals to use as bridges to access hidden areas! I'm thrilled by the idea to final have some first-hand references: what you find online are generally random photos, not a methodical study of the most grunge and weathered buildings of the city!

My wife traveled there for business. Stay away from the "Red Light District" unless you are into that sort of thing, and it is quite dangerous in that part of the city as well. The culture and city overall is very interesting according to my wife. Lots to see and do. The dock area is another fascinating place as is the market. take lots of pictures if you game anything for Pulp, etc.

Hong Kong helped me quit smoking. After 13 years as a smoker, I got such a terrible chest cold/infection after 8 days there that I stopped smoking and never started again.
Had great fun, excellent food, bought a few knockoff rugby jerseys. The first person who talked to me as I was wandering the streets was a Japanese businessman with a British accent who wanted to bum a smoke because he didn't know where to buy any, despite there being a 7/11 convenience store on every other corner. Wonderful experience, the whole trip.

I lived there as a kid, but this was back in the 70's mind, so I don't know if any of my experiences could still be had. For gaming interest ... hmmmm ... I guess the only thing that springs to mind would be the Tiger Balm Gardens.
I've just Googled it and found it was 'redeveloped' (demolished), but some of the statutes and stuff were preserved and are housed in the Haw Par Mansion as a museum. Might be worth a trip.

One of my best experiences was taking a river boat to Guangzhou when visiting the mainland. Much more sedate and scenic than going through Shenzen. Another occasion we were due to take the high speed train to Dongguan but a colleague left his passport in the hotel and we missed it. The later train was an old steamer with double decker carriages which meandered the long way around at a snails pace but for me it was fantastic. The sites and experiences of the local people doing their day to day with pigs or chickens under an arm, selling street (should that be train) food etc. was marvellous and will stay with me forever. Rural schoolchildren exercising in playgrounds, farmers in paddy fields, river dolphins, cormorant fishing and peasant architecture that could have been there hundreds of years - all fantastic.
As for HK itself I could only point you in the direction of entertainment. If your budget stretches that far the best steaks ever are in Mortons in Tsim Sha Tsu but also heartily recommend Dan Ryans at a fraction of the cost.

Sorry Jack, I asked a friend of mine who's been there three or four times to visit family and he said all he does when he goes is eat. Fat lot of help that is! lol
