Having just finished reading Al J. Venter "The Chopper Boys: Helicopter Warfare in Africa," I was excited to see a good number of period photographs showing rural buildings in Africa. It was surprising to see little change from what I would consider typical Colonial era huts. So, I decided to pick up a few buildings for scenarios set out in the bush.

The first were a nice find at the local craft store, Michaels, here in the U.S. They are prepainted, but I of course decided to spice them up a bit. Using Michael's online coupons, you can pick them up for either 50% or 40% off their marked price of $4.99 each. They looked like the perfect size for my 20mm figures, so I've collected a number of them. Read more about them on my Lead Legionaries blog here:

At a convention a couple month's back, I picked up an Acheson Creations 25mm Zulu hut that was a bit larger and could be the village chieftain's hut. The low doorway means it also looks nice with my 20mm figs. For more pics and painting description, click here for my blog entry:

The next step for a scenario set near a kraal will be to scratch build some fences and animal pens like I saw pictured in the book. Oh, and here's the link to the book on the publisher's U.S. distributor, Casemate Publishers:

The sculpting is similar on the two types, looks like they all fit well together. Good find!
