Title: Beefcake's floating tentacle baggage train
Post by: beefcake on January 03, 2017, 10:06:29 AM
Two ideas.
Floating baggage is meant to be a fantasy type baggage train using floating tentacle beasts that I'll sculpt.

The missile silo is an idea for my supers project that I've been toying with.

I'll probably go for the first one though. Just a small project.

Now you say that :)

Righto, off my lazy bum now.
I've done a few concept sketches of what I want this thing to look like. I'll focus mainly on the beast and the baggage and if I have time I'll make a merchant to go with it.
The basic idea is that it is an air floating jellyfish/squid thing.
It has a gas sack that controls the altitude of it but it generally stays within a few metres of the ground so it can find prey, floating higher if predators are near by. I am thinking I will go for the beaked mouth rather than the toothy mouth or the mouth that is just a sphincter, although the last would make it seem quite different to anything else.
It will have multiple tentacles with a few longer ones used as probes and to ensnare creatures. the shorter ones also hold prey while the beast devours its prey (whole in the case of the sphincter or ripping it in the case of the teeth or beak)
The shorter tentacles also hold the beast in place in case of high winds etc as this creature mainly moves where the winds take it. In extreme cases it can use its longer tentacles to propel it along the ground for short times. It is at home as much over the water as over land.
It can reach great altitudes useful for when over oceans to avoid storms. (making this up as I go along)
It has been domesticated and used as a beast of burden for millennia. When well fed they are extremely docile.

Anyway, I'll add more to this info as I think of it.
If anyone played Morrowind (Elder Scrolls 3) you can probably see the inspiration from the Netch.

Here are some pictures
The first one is the beast, the second is hooks and things used for bringing it to the ground to access wares.

I've fleshed out the jellyfish main body part of it, well actually I've got 2 so if I have time I might make a second. I have a couple of pieces to attach the longer tentacles to (this will be hidden by smaller tentacles) and I've made 10 smaller pieces to sculpt wicker basket texture to.
I've no idea for a name yet so any ideas would be welcome. :)

Nice!  What about calling them something like 'glats' as in a contraction of gelatinous?

You could perhaps have greater glats and lesser glats,  or glats and great glats.  Watch out for the wild glats though.

lol, well said.
Thanks for the encouragement and ideas all.
I have made a little progress tonight with the baskets. I sculpted one and may try to make a press mold for it but don't think it will capture the detail well enough and may need to sculpt more of them. I'll post some pictures tomorrow. I also sculpted 2 beaks, an open and semi-closed one. I'll see what they look like in better light as it was quite dim when I sculpted them.
More photos to come.

Wicker basket number one is nearly complete. I still need to texture the bottom of it. I'll also be adding different sort of wares in the tops. Maybe some scrolls, fruits and other knick knacks.
(http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr309/kminis/P1300641_zpszl3xacaa.jpg) (http://s494.photobucket.com/user/kminis/media/P1300641_zpszl3xacaa.jpg.html)
I also made a quick press mold for it but may need to rethink the mold and make it a full mold rather than a wrap around texture.
(http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr309/kminis/P1300642_zpsnxmm3mjd.jpg) (http://s494.photobucket.com/user/kminis/media/P1300642_zpsnxmm3mjd.jpg.html)
And here are the beaks. Since the photo was taken, I have added some brownstuff to the open one so that the bitey bit is bitier.
(http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr309/kminis/P1300643_zpst1nkdsjc.jpg) (http://s494.photobucket.com/user/kminis/media/P1300643_zpst1nkdsjc.jpg.html)

I'm quickly running out of greenstuff too (which is a good thing as this lot is starting to go bad. I might need to start storing it in the freezer or something like that).

Cheers guys. It was actually really easy to make. I just use a small flathead screwdriver to push the correct bits down and repeated followed by some tidying up. I made another tonight in much quicker time. I'm slow going at the moment with sick kids so can't get too much done.   :(

Cheers. Chicken pox, my 2 y/o had some medicine that was meant to make her drowsy last night but it has a possible side effect of hyperactivity... she finally went to sleep at 4:45am. My lovely wife let me get some sleep though and I looked after my daughter when she awoke at 6. So in light of this I may not be very productive today.

No pics but a little more done on this. Sign has been created, just need to sculpt the texture on the back. Also added some apples to one of the baskets.
Any ideas what I can put into the other baskets?

Very nice sculpting there. I wish I had decided on something organic, like a flock of flamingos.
Title: Re: Beefcake's floating tentacle baggage train
Post by: beefcake on January 19, 2017, 08:02:38 AM
or a Flock of Seagulls?
I can't do inorganic (and can barely do organic) hence my choice.
Maybe next time I'll "build" something rather than sculpt, although I do enjoy sculpting.
Currently I'm really low on Greenstuff so I can't actually get onto the body or tentacles. Which is frustrating.

So do I. Hopefully it will arrive tomorrow. I have about an inch of GS tape left.
Regardless I have plugged on with some of the baskets.
One with what should be cabbages and the other is covered in cloth. I might put some sort of critter arm hanging out the side, contraband goods or something like that. (There's some fluff, domesticated ones of these are used by smugglers to fly their goods past customs officials. Throw a rope over the town walls at night and the goods are through)
I twisting some florist wire (doubled up) to make the rope. Then pushed it into the GS. Use s spare bit of GS to make the tie.
I'm a terrible photographer so here is one with and without flash.

Yes it is :) That's where my inspiration came from. It should look a little different by the end though.

Another basket finished tonight (except for the top and bottom), I'm getting very quick at them now.
I've found a few rings for hooking necklaces together. I'll be using them as harness rings and sculpting some straps onto the beast.
In the mean time, with my extra GS I've been sculpting a floating brain creature (no BS comp obviously)

Definitely not a negative. I've always loved the Morrowind aesthetic and wished Bethesda would make some Elder Scrolls miniatures. (Although I do remember someone on Dakka Dakka sculpting them from GS.)

Some good progress made on this guy.
The main bodies nearly have all the jelliness added to them. I'll be sculpted some sort of gills to the front and the back might have some sort of platelet tecturing to it. The harnesses still need to go on. I need to do the undersides as well. I'm sculpting 2 of them and will see which looks the best. I'm really hoping that it doesn't end up looking like some sort of alien with an S&M fetish.
Other than that I still have to do:
Tentacles (Lots)
Bottoms to the baskets
Merchants
Attaching ropes.
I may sculpt a second sign to go on the other side.

Hope you don't mind me giving my two pence?

The staps look great and all. I'd just say to increase the balloonification (if that's a word) The top bit doesn't really scream balloon or floaty thing to me but the others bits between the straps are closer to that.

Looks good all the same!

I get you. I'm probably too far along now to change the balloonness (if that's also a word). I may see how much time I have at the end. The "gills" can probably be remodelled easily. It's just a matter of time now though. Thanks for the feedback :)

Brilliant!
Make sure that read the rest of the series, if you have not already.

A really fun looking sculpt - have you had any thoughts about the paint job?

Lol, nope. I think I may have to go for varying shades of green... I don't think I'll get it painted. Just built.

What about purple going on pink on the tentacles and patches of the body?

That's a nice idea. By varying shades of green I was referring to the green stuff.  :D

I'm actually pretty close to finishing this now. However the merchant/handler needs a bit of work.
When properly attached the baskets will be sagging inwards a bit more to give them a sense of weight.

Well this green has been bought from me (pending whether it casts alright or not). Hopefully it will be available some time in the near future. Can't say who has bought it yet though.

I was just looking on their site , saw this and went "huh, that's an odd thing. I wonder who designed this?" And then came here and found this!
A lovely ..thing. I sort of want one but have NO idea why.

Love it .although all I can here is' First Troma gave you killer tomato's ,Now Beefcake brings you mutant flying Watermelons !'😉
(Andy's colour scheme would probably scared small children now its in one piece. So green was definitely the way to go)
Joking aside. I had wondered if you'd ever managed to finish it,after the comp.I'm Glad to see it cast,it looks great .

Mark.

Cheers all. Yes, I thought Watermelon as well but the company paintjob looks great I think. That's my third thing from them released so far, no 5th (actually if you include the  individual things in the multipack of little worms, that makes it 9th). I have a few more things they have yet to release as well. Can't say anything but it's also floating but sci-fi.
