Just stumbled over this a few hours before the deadline, so details are still to be determined, and I'll write up a more thorough opening post.
It'll most likely be a scratchbuild based on what I originally thought was an early McQuarrie concept for the A-Wing, but turns out to be an alternate Galactica Raptor:

Cheers!
Alright, time for that more in-depth post I promised. Work's been busy lately, so there's been little time for building and less time for following the forum, but I've finally had some time.
I should say right off the bat that I won't be adhering strictly to the drawing, but rather using it as inspiration. I'll most likely be deviating a fair bit. :)
I've little idea about the scaling, but I knew I wanted it to be 28 mm scale so I could use it as terrain for the Rogue Stars games a friend and I are planning, so I reckoned that I should start with the cockpit:
And a pic of it assembled:
And one for scale:

Later there'll be a front-bit but I'll kept them separate for painting. Right now it's looking like the craft itself will be about 200 mm long.

That is a wonderful start.
Loving the detail you have added.
:-* :-*
Nice brushwork on the scale provider too.

Wow! :o Great start!....and a nicely painted mini as well!
Are you planning on painting the cockpit and then building the rest of the ship around it?
-
Impressive! Nice ship choice too!
-
Nice!
-
That is seriously good.
-
Great start, impressive detail!
-
Great start - if the rest of the model is as detailed as the cockpit you are onto a winner.
:)
-
Nice attention to detail!
-
I'm liking that.
-
Nice cockpit. Looks promising. :)
-
Btw, you'll need to change the title of your thread.....I don't think you can call it an 'attempt' any longer! ;)
-
Awesome start! :o
Can't wait to see rest of it!
-
Strong start!

You're all too kind!
The last couple of days have been silly busy at work, so I've gotten very little done, but I managed some:
That should give a rough idea of what I'm aiming at. The plan is to cut pieces of 0.5 mm plasticard, scribe it and glue it on the skeleton. I've never tried scribing in this way before, so it's a bit of a wash how it'll end up!
And a quick one to show it all fitting together:
I hope to get the canopy done next. I've had some clear plastic lying about for ages, so I'm excited to finally be using the stuff.

:o

This looks like a modelling project that I would like.
Thanks for the updated work-in-progress images.

This is gonna be so good.

My apologies for being so quiet during the week, work's been busy lately. There's also been precious little time to work on this, but I've gotten a little bit done.
Thanks for the comments guys, they're much appreciated!
Since last I've scored the middle bit, clad the side-bits, built the engine baffles and gotten the canopy hood semi-built - it's just the structure for now, but after a bit more detailing I'll paint it, and add the glazing afterwards.
I hope, at least. I've no idea how it'll turn out. The hood took up about 50% of the time I've spent on this, so I'm hoping this iteration will work, at least.

And one with the bits taken apart:
As you can see, I also started cutting the wings, but I've been having second thoughts on those. I'm actually considering going for longer wings, a bit like the atmospheric Tie fighters in Rogue One, but I'm far from sure. I'd really appreciate your thoughts!
(As an aside, this is officially the most expensive scratchbuild I've done - I managed to dump most of a bottle of glue over our table, and it took off a good bit of the colour. Going to have to get a new one at some point now. It's only a cheapish one from IKEA, but still, it annoyed me no end. )

I think we've all been there at some time or other. At least it wasn't an antique family heir loom!

Urgh - you have my sympathies.
-
Model looking great - bad luck on the glue though!
-
Thanks a lot guys!
And yeah, it's no biggie - I was just annoyed I was clumsy again. At least I didn't cover the model in glue...
-
cracking scratch building- Pity about the table, I ruined my bedroom carpet with a pot of red paint, so I know the pain.
-
My priorities would be model-glue-table... the cleaning up before the bollocking!
-
Glue mishap aside (ouch!) that is really looking the nuts.
Great scratchbuilding at its best!

Agreed! :-* How are you thinking of doing the air intakes and the engine bells?
-
I'm enjoying this very much!
-
Thanks a lot guys, it's quite motivating and very humbling! :)

... I wasn't actually going to do any air intakes, but after seeing this I've been thinking it over, and I think this solves the problem of integrating the wings properly into the fuselage without them just looking like they're slapped on. Cheers!
I'm thinking I'll have intakes on the side, in the wing root, and do a duct like structure to the engines.
Right now the priority is on getting the basic structure done. I'll be picking up a grey spray sometime soon to get a neutral coat on her and better see where I've missed spots with the filler and sandpaper.
This means I need to get the engines, wings and tail rudder done, and the belly covering as well. Then a grey spray, the final detailing, and the paintjob.
-
Looking very good!
-
Keep going - finish it, and then get it cast, I want a squadron of them
;)
-
McQuarrie! Fantastic idea. Looks great.
-
very nice built
-
That's looking a bit good that is.
-
Cheers for all the comments, they really are much appreciated!
Akula, much, much appreciated, but this thing is huge and I can barely get bits to come out in one piece from my casting attempts - this thing'd be mainly airbubbles with bits of resin in it! :P
This is going to sound weird, but I actually thought I updated this earlier... The glue fumes must be getting to me. o_o
So, this is going to be a bit of an imagedump. In the end, I went with longer wings, to get a bit of that A-wing style into the ship. I've made them nice and thick so they won't break when I handle them (also, since it's a spacecraft, there's little reason optimise for aerodynamics. For the times it'll be in atmo, I reckon if it's got a drive capable of going to superluminal speeds, it't got enough power to make ordinary physics go sit in the corner. )
WiP, from last week:
This was where I was saturday evening, when I put everything away:
Wings are put together and the surface scored, the underside built with cutouts for the landing gear, and the air intakes (Yes, air intakes on a spacecraft. It's for... reasons. Mainly because I like them. I'll think up a reason at some point, possibly refuelling from gas planets. ) cut out and ready to go.
And with a bit of work today, I'm at this point:
Also, the pilot showed up from Hasslefree, so I could take some scale shots:
She's gotten fairly big, but that's just a bonus. The plan has always been to use her for terrain when a mate and I try out Rogue Stars, and the pilot might become a NPC or something, so large is good.
The to-do list is getting shorter -the plan right now is to build some wingtip cannons - and I've finally tracked down the steel rod I've got lying about for that -, build the landing gear, make a cockpit opening mechanism, and then I'll just need to fill some gaps, do the greeblies, and paint her, plus the pilot.
And THEN I can finally get back to the larger build I originally started for the terrain! lol
-
Blimey - its huge. :o
Very interesting - I really like the shape 8) :-*
-
It's great to see your take on the McQuarrie concept - good choice of pilot as well
8)
I know what you mean about casting - didn't realise it was quite that big, would be a beast !
-
Another really great build. Nice adaptation of the original inspiration. 8)
Looking forward to seeing the painted model.
Blimey - its huge. :o
This!

That IS cool - nice and big model too :o 8) :-*

Nice work! :)

That looks stunning.
Well done and thank you for all the work-in-progress images.
Good luck.

Really liking this build

That's a beauty.
-
Another brilliant build!
-
That thing looks *fast*.
-
Impressive build, very cool!

Hi all,
I have to apologise for my inactivity over the last while. A combination of work and personal stuff has meant that I've been very, very busy lately, and generally been sleeping when I've not been working in some capacity. I did manage to submit the build though! I'd post pics, but as I understand it, the finished build is only supposed to go to the competition judges?
I've been humbled by all the kind comments, and really do have to give you guys a massive thanks - you're a friendly lot, and I look forward to posting more on LAF.
Cheers for a grand time lads!
-
No need to apologise at all. I'm very much looking forward to seeing it.
